  1. The CC my ds is taking DE classes at has a good reputation in our area.  This semester ds is taking 2 classes, one on person and one online (the only option for the particular class).  The online class has been fine.  It’s the in person class that’s stressing me out.  There have been no grades for over half the semester.  I really don’t understand how the teacher is running this class.  I’m just hoping that when it’s over ds will have a decent grade.

  2. I’m a 3, but without the getting too close part.  Most of the interstates where I travel are 70mph.  If I stayed in the left lane, I would be goin 65 or less.  I set my cruise about 75 and try not to have to take it off, so passing people is necessary, especially when there’s only 2 lanes.  Seriously though, there are places I have driven where driving under the speed limit is a good way to get rear ended.  Driving 10 or more miles under the speed limit can be just as dangerous in some places as speeding.

  3. My mom lives in part of LA that was hit by tornadoes today.  I called to make sure she’s ok.  Her neighbor behind her has a tree that’s been rotten and needed to be removed a looong time ago.  It fell towards her house.  Thankfully she has a large tree that she wants to remove because the roots are causing problems and the rotten tree fell on it.  So most of the tree is in her yard.

What is her best course of action?  These neighbors aren’t likely to be decent and cut it up themselves or pay someone to do it.  I haven’t seen pictures, but I imagine it’s going to require professionals to avoid further damage to the fence or either backyard shed. Should she just suck it up and pay for it herself?  Is it worth involving her homeowners insurance?  Other options I’m not thinking of?

  4. I didn’t drive the hour or so in 2017 and I’m definitely not driving 5+ hours to see it this time.  I got 2 pairs of eclipse glasses from Kroger and 7yo dd and I watched what we could between the clouds in our front yard.  Saw it (about 90%) for just a minute at the peak.  A little disappointed that we didn’t see the funny crescent shadows like the last time, but it’s a small price to pay to not be I. The horrible traffic I’ve seen pictures of online.  A couple families I know were driving to see it and coming back today.  You would have to pay me an awful lot of money to do that.  4 minutes is not worth it.

  5. Feeding my kids is very tricky.  Dd21 eats a decent variety of things, but she has celiac disease, so she is limited to gluten free foods.  Some things are just too complicated to make gf.  Ds16 is your general picky eater.  He would live off chicken nuggets, burgers, pizza, and mac and cheese and be perfectly content.  Dd7 is the hardest.  She has sensory food aversion, so her diet is very limited.  She dislikes all chicken except Tyson chicken fries and Chick-fil-A nuggets.  She only eats beef in sausage or tacos.  She doesn’t like any sauces, gravies, etc.  She does ok with fruit, but not vegetables.  Add dh’s pickiness and cooking something for dinner that everyone can and will eat is extremely frustrating.

  6. Update:  She made it through the weekend ok enough, but started back with the runny nose Sunday afternoon.    I talked to a friend this weekend who had a similar experience with a kid who ended up having asthma, so I’m really thinking it has something to do with her coughing.  Took her to urgent care this morning.  The NP we saw said he thought it was just allergies (tree pollen is really bad here right now).  He didn’t think she has asthma and we would have to see the pediatrician if we wanted testing for that.  After talking to dh, we are going to get her switched to our family practice doctor instead of continuing to deal with the problems getting to see the pediatrician .

  7. I’m still using the 2 wheeled carry on size bag that was dh’s before we got married, so it’s 20+ years old.  I keep thinking I need to replace it, but it still works, even if it isn’t so nice looking anymore

Mmm. If your grandma bought them for you and you forgot about them. Until now.

I’m in this category.  Plus we bought several the first few years we were married.  We talked about using them years ago, but got confused about which were matured and how to get the money from them.  So we did nothing.

The arena in Baltimore is mostly seated. The path from the airport to the arena isn’t altered due to Key Bridge detours. Here’s a chart and images:

I’m not familiar with where the bridge is.  Would it be between the venue and N VA?  Dh’s brother lives in that area, so we might try to go visit if we went there.

What about Duluth, GA (Atlanta metro)? Agree with Sneezy about picking front row seats around the floor.

That’s the one I’m leaning towards.  He originally wanted a weekend so college dd could come, but she says it would probably be too loud for her, so she’s not interested.

  11. Dh is obsessed with 21 Pilots.  He found out that tickets are about to go on sale for their new tour.  He’s ready to buy plane tickets to see them somewhere.  One problem is that he has some joint issues and cannot stand a long time without a lot of pain.  So it can’t be a standing only venue.  If you are familiar with different venues, or just one near you, would you look at the list and tell me which would be better places to go?  He especially interested in Las Vegas.  Venues in the Southeast might be possible to drive to.  Unfortunately Nashville’s date doesn’t work as it’s closest.

Have you ruled out allergy induced asthma? There are some people who have cough variant asthma who really only have flareups around illness or peak pollen times. The cough resolves if you give a bit of albuterol because the underlying problem is inflammation in the airways.

I hadn’t thought of that.  Unfortunately, I tried to get her in to the pediatrician, but it would be 2 weeks before I could get her in, so that doesn’t help me right now.  I’m going to have to find her a new doctor as this has happened several times.

Would they be able to diagnose this at urgent care?  If it’s not better tomorrow, I’m going to have to go there.

Coughs are the worst! Other than the things you already do, we will do hot tea with *lots* of honey. A squeeze of lemon juice too if the child doesn’t mind. Also, a humidifier in the room can help sometimes.

She doesn’t like tea of any kind.  I’ve tried honey in the past, but it doesn’t last long.

  14. My 7yo dd gets the sniffles for a day or 2, then coughs for days (often at least a week).  She had the smallest bit of sniffles Sunday and Monday, so now she’s coughing a lot.  She’s on Zyrtec and Flonase daily because pollen season has arrived and we all have allergies.  I can give her Delsym, but it really doesn’t do anything.  We have a really big event this weekend and she needs to be over this cough.  Getting her in to the pediatrician to get RX cough medicine is difficult lately, as they are always booked up and I don’t want to sit in urgent care and pick up something worse.

What really helps your kids get over a cough?  I’m ready to try just about anything.

  15. There should be someone in the admissions office that can give you a schedule of what needs to be done by what date.

Regarding financial aid, do they not qualify for the unsubsidized student loans?  If that’s all they take out for loans, it is not a terrible amount to pay back.  If you or they can pay the interest while in school, it keeps it from growing much before repayment.

I am confused. You said you had annual checks of your HVAC system. Are you stating that this was the first time they checked it all?

This was the first year we paid for the annual check.  Otherwise we only called when something broke.  So no one had looked at the ductwork in the attic in a long time.
