  1. Hello, anyone who remembers me from years past! Can some of you Latin experts help me out? How do you say, "Peace be with you" in Latin? It's straight out of the Anglican prayer book, so it's got to be a common phrase. Blessings, and I have missed you all! Katherine
  2. No, it was not my choice, and yes, it was difficult. I will recover, but it has been tough.
  3. Actually, no. She has some very time-intensive extra-curricular activities that made homeschooling the best option for her, but her parents needed someone to help direct it. So they hired me to spend one day a week with her, planning, grading, answering questions, etc. She is very self-motivated and is doing quite well. Thanks for asking. He has just passed the three-year mark since his diagnosis with diabetes. It has taken a long time for him to be able to bring it under good control, but he is doing much better with it now. He was in a very promising study with a test drug; but sadly, after finishing two years with the study, we learned that he had received the placebo. My dh of 22 years decided in 2008 to end our marriage, so I am now divorced and am trying to rebuild. I have earned a teaching certificate, but have been having difficulty finding a full-time teaching position. I sub 4-5 days every week in my kids' schools, tutor, and do writing and editing on the side. Life definitely does not always turn out the way you think it will.
  4. Hello, everyone, remember me? I haven't posted in a couple of years -- I had to put my kids in public school in the fall of 2007. But I have recently started tutoring a 12yo homeschooled girl at our church once a week. I have a question for those of you who do Saxon Math. I have heard many other homeschoolers say that it is sufficient to have a student only do every other problem for homework. My student is complaining that the workload in Saxon is excessive, and she wants to do only the even or only the odd problems. Since I have just started with her, and since I only used A Beka math with my own kids in the past, I thought I would come here to consult the experts. What sayeth the Hive?
  5. It's been more than two years since I had to stop homeschooling, but it seems from my PM box that some of you still remember me. I started posting as "Katherine B. in TX" in 2001 or so, then later switched to "Lady Katherine." I am trying to sell many of my nine years worth of accumulated homeschool books, so I've been starting to post on the sale and swap board. Thanks to those of you who remember me and sent me messages! It's good to "see" you all!! :grouphug:
  6. My 12yo dd and I had to be in El Paso yesterday, and we spent the afternoon at the market in Juarez. I found some beautiful hand-painted crosses that I bought as gifts for several friends and family members, and each has a short sentiment expressed in Spanish on the box. The merchant who sold them to me spent half an hour or so helping me understand what they basically mean, so I know the general gist of each one, but I would like to provide a good translation with each gift. I tried some free on-line translators, but it came out very stitled and awkward. Would you help me? I have four of them, but only one needs to be delivered today. It's for my sister-in-law. I think the wording is intended more for a real sister, but we are so close that the verse seemed appropriate for the most part. There is a tilde on the n in "companera" and an accent or two on other words that I don't know how to type on the computer, but you'll be able to tell. Thank you so much!
  7. My wonderful hubby got me a Ragamuffin cat for a late Christmas gift -- one I've been wanting for ages. She's a sweet little thing and we all just love her, but yikes!! Remember on the old TV show "Friends", when Phoebe would sing the "Smelly Cat" song? Well, I can't get it out of my head! I empty this stupid litter box two to four times every day, sometimes more, and it's not enough! The little fiend runs in there the minute I've left the room, and uses it again. OR... she'll wait until I'm happily settled in a nice warm bubble bath (never before), and she'll hop in the box and stink up the whole room again. :ack2: We have a septic tank, so I started out using one of those biodegradable litters you can flush. It couldn't control the smell, so I switched to a stronger multi-cat brand and carry the waste out to the trash each time. It still stinks! :banghead: I'm feeding this stupid animal the same expensive food the breeder used (Diamond cat food), and when I tried to switch, the problem got a LOT worse. I haven't tried Science Diet yet, but she's so intollerant to changing food that I'm not very hopeful it will help. I'm already using a covered box, and there isn't another spot in the whole house where this thing will fit. Hubby forbids me to move it to the laundry room for fear it will stink up the whole house. He is not talking about getting rid of the cat (yet), but he's not happy. :toetap05: Anyone have any ideas? Favorite litters, helpful foods, anything? Should I take this poor creature to the vet? I've had cats before, but I don't remember ANY of them smelling this bad. If anyone has the magic solution, I am ALL EARS!! :bigear:
  8. When I put my previously homeschooled kids in ps last fall, our school district went "above and beyond" to help them get placed correctly, and to help them adjust to the change. I have a long list of teachers, counselors, and nurses for whom a simple "thank-you" just isn't enough. :grouphug: If I could afford it, I'd get all of them gift certificates for the best steakhouse in town -- they were THAT good. But the best I am going to be able to manage is a personal letter of appreciation for each, along with a plate of homemade baked goods. Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies just aren't good enough for this project. I need something melt-in-your-mouth memorable. Cookies, cake, pie... I'll make anything, but I need your ideas. This needs to be SPECIAL! Thanks in advance!!
  9. On Internet Explorer, how do you find out what websites someone has been looking at? I know you can do it, but I can't figure it out, and need to know right away. TIA!
  10. In general, on WTM. I was learning so much about ds13's diabetes over on the CWD forum that I never made it back over here! :blushing: Just wondered if there had been any huge debates, massive disagreements, earth-shattering news, troll hunts.... you know.... the usual stuff one misses while on board break! :D
  11. Boston Legal! (What's worse is, we don't have TV, so I get it on NetFlix!)
  12. I find that hydrogen peroxide works better than water.
  13. Fundamentally, I agree that we should vote for the candidate we support, no matter what his/her chances. Realisitically, a third-party vote is a wasted vote.
  14. .... I've been MIA here on WTM. Anything interesting happen while I was gone? :D
  15. Yes. 13yo ds was diagnosed one year ago in March. It's been a wild ride, and there is still SO much we have to learn. It's a complex, worrisome, dangerous, and stressful disease. (Ds says for me to add "very, very annoying.") Feel free to PM or email me if you want to talk.
  16. Recorded books: The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, narrated by Rob Ingles. HOURS and HOURS of fascinating listening. (Might be a bit much for 12 and 10, though.)
  17. I've seen parakeets mixed in with flocks of blackbirds in our area. I was always told they would be fine all summer but wouldn't survive the winter. But if you have them in Chicago and Germany, they obviously can.
  18. Yes. I would, I have, I did. When we came to a point where we were satisfied that our kids had the solid spiritual foundation we had been striving for, and when it became clear that the public school could meet their special needs (ADD, ADHD, dysgraphia, diabetes) better than we could, homeschooling was no longer the best option - ps was. So we went ps. If we lived in a different district, we might have made a very different decision.
  19. :iagree: Well said. I tend to agree, although you have to admit that "modesty" really does mean different things to different people. "Is it too modest?" really is a question that must be answered by the person wearing the swimsuit -- if you're uncomfortable, it's immodest no matter what everyone else thinks. Modesty is in the eye of the wearer, in this case, not necessarily the beholder! But I do think that an unusually modest swimsuit does draw attention to itself, and it seems to me that women who would want these styles probably would not want the attention. But perhaps they tend to wear them in places where mostly similar-minded people swim, and/or in women-only situations. If others are wearing them, then they are both modest and not particularly attention-drawing. Personally, I'm no longer comfortable with anything other than what I used to call the "little old lady" styles -- one piece with a high-cut neckline, an ample underarm for good booK coverage, and a skirt. And if I were swimming in a group of people who were all wearing the ultra-modest styles shown on some of these websites, I would not object to wearing them myself.
  20. My step-sister's husband has been looking ill for some time, and a lot of our family had begun to worry about him. This week, he had some scans done that revealed "abnormalities". We don't know for sure what is going on yet, but it sure doesn't look good. If what they are seeing is cancer, it is large and has metastisized to several locations. He's a dear man and we're all just sick about this. :grouphug:
  21. Well, I doubt the First Lady really has much to say about it, but in a perfect world, I'd do my darndest towards abolishing the IRS. Do I hear a WOOT :w00t: WOOT :w00t: ??
