  1. I am pretty sure my dd will gain at Houston SI. She is an eater and if she is dancing that much she will be eating even more. She also has a HUGE fear of throwing up. I am not to worried. Plus, my MIL and SIL, who she is staying with, eat out all the time. What I am most worried about is her coming home expecting to put in her order and have it delivered to her. :)
  2. My dd13 is also an 8th grader and a dancer. What has worked for her this year is more workbook/independent type curriculum. The things that have worked well this year are CLE language arts/reading and the Key to Series for math. I will admit we do not get to much history but she is in a science class that meets once a week and she does the rest of the work on her own. We will be stepping it up next year for high school. We will see how it goes. I am hoping to sign her up for a couple more co-op classes like her science class for history and writing. Dd starts school each day around 9:30 and is usually done with her school work by 1 or 2 at the latest and then still has a couple of hours of down time before she has to go to dance class. I have also wondered how the girls that go to PS do it. I never see any of them at the studio with school work and most of them come straight from school to the studio.
  3. I was also concerned about nutrition at SIs too. I saw that at the Houston one they are required to take a nutrition class and that their meals are based on what they are learning in class. And thanks for the link to the dance talk forum. Tons of info there!:)
  4. She is very social. She has never met a stranger. Hopefully, that will help her bond. We are buying the catered lunches and we are hoping her grandmother, who she is going to be staying with, won't mind her being gone all weekend on outings!:) 6-8 pairs of pointe shoes?? :svengo: I was afraid of that!:) Luckily, her aunt who also lives in Houston has offered to buy all of her attire and shoes. :)
  5. I have wondered about how many pairs of pointe shoes to send. Right now she can make it almost 6 months on one pair. Her studio only has them doing pointe twice a week. I was thinking 3 pairs??? Should I send more?? She would love to stay in the dorm. We just don't have another $3000 to fork out in dorm costs!:) She looks at this as a 6 week long slumber party and is kind of bummed about not staying in the dorms. But we have told her she can do which ever weekend activities she wants. She is really looking forward to spending a lot of time with girls that are as focused as she is on ballet. I hope she makes a ton of new friends.
  6. I am wondering if anyone's child has ever gone to the Houston Ballet Summer Intensive? Dd13 has been accepted, she will be 14 next month. She has never been to a summer intensive before. She tried out for intensives last year and got accepted to some but last year we just auditioned just for fun. This year she wants to go. I truly do not know a lot about summer intensives. Wondering what kind of experience other kids have had at the Houston Ballet? She will be gone for 6 weeks which freaks me out but she is all for it! :) She will be staying with family in Houston so we don't have to worry about dorm/roommate issues. What all should I look out for or prepare dd for?? What supplies other than regular ballet class stuff should I send with here? Thanks, Lori
  7. Thank you! I had a feeling that is how we should have done things from the start. The kids were just so excited to have a cat to actually play with. I will try locking him in the bathroom and see how that goes. I just can not imagine giving her away. I wish I knew some single old woman that would love to have a cat!
  8. I have a question. We have had our cat for about 7 years. We got her when she was only a couple months old. She is very timid and always has been. She has never liked dh. She has never let our kids do anything for her other than feed her, ever. She hardly ever comes out of our master bedroom. We have always said she would be better off with a single old woman. That is the kind of cat she is. She only lets me near her. We recently adopted an adult male cat from a friend that had to give away all their pets because of a family emergency and a move. This cat is the most wonderful cat. He is so cuddly and lets our kids play with him. He loves dh. He fits in perfect with our family. He is the type of cat that will jump up on the table during school time and just plop down and enjoy being with us. He and our other cat do not get along. Our first cat runs from him and growls at him and he pushes her buttons just because he can. He never actually does anything to her other than pester. She is terrified of him. Our problem is now that she is so afraid of our new cat she is no longer using the litter box. She hids under our bed all the time. She has even peed on our bed!!! :glare: Does anyone have any advice on how to at least get her to be brave enough to use the litter box? We have tried buying another litter box hoping they would just have his and hers litter boxes but that hasn't worked. We have locked her in the bathroom were we keep one litter box hoping she will do her business while she is in there but she doesn't. I have to carry her to her food and water or she is to scared to go and eat because she is so afraid.... My husband is ready to just throw her outside and wish her luck....I see us having to drop her off at the pound soon. Which will break our kids' hearts. She has never been nice to them but they have a soft spot for her and they know what happens at the pound. I have horrible guilt about dropping her off there too. She may not be the most lovable cat but I have had her for 7 years sleeping next to my pillow every night and knowing how she behaves that it is very unlikely she will be adopted. Any advice on how to work this out??
  9. This is our current favorite. Lemon Vinaigrette 2/3 c fresh lemon juice 2 tbs Dijon mustard 1 c extra virgin olive oil 2 tbs finely minced onion Sea salt to taste 1 tbs honey or to taste Put the lemon juice and mustard into a blender container and blend until smooth. With the blender running, add the olive oil in a steady stream. Stir in remaining ingredients by hand.
  10. I see what you mean about the geography and history. I was thinking since it is kind of young she could get a little more geography terms and stuff and not be overly stressed by it. Plus, it said it has 3 different levels in one book, I was thinking I could also use it with my boys at the same time and kill two birds with one stone!:) But I think you may be right. It might be a little much. We have Rosetta Stone already so that is why I was just going to use it...I haven't really looked into any other programs. Thanks everyone for all the advice! Keep it coming!!:)
  11. I was thinking of a having her do Lightning Literature Early-Mid 19th Century but it wouldn't match up with her history and History Odyssey seems to have a lot of literature. I didn't know if doing a separate literature would be to much??
  12. what I am doing!:) My first time to post on highschool board. My dd13 will be a freshman next year(which really freaks me out!). She is our oldest and in my IRL circle of homeschool friends she is the oldest. So, I am needing some help to make sure I have everything covered. Dd is a very fine arts kind of person. She is the type of kid that has to be moving to think. She is a ballet dance. Very rigorous curriculum does not work for her. I need curriculum that lays it all out for me. Here is what we have planned so far: Math-MUS Algebra 1(1 credit) Lang. Arts-(1 credit) Grammar-Daily Grams just to keep it all fresh Writing-Either a local coop class or IEW with a local homeschool mom. I have no idea how to teach this. Vocabulary-Wordly Wise Science(1 credit)-Apologia Physical Science with local enrichment class. She is doing General Science this year with the same class and is doing really well. History(1 credit)-History Odyssey Ancients level 3...might be to intense....Any other suggestions? World Geography-Trail Guide to World Geography. She has not done much geography. Do I add this into the History credit? Foreign lang.(2 credits)-Rosetta Stone Spanish and she is dying to learn Sign Language. If we put her in local coop they offer Sign Language. Fine Arts(1 credit)- Art-We do artist study/picture study and I try to come up with a project to go along with our current artist. Also, if we put her in the local coop she can take Art there and maybe digital photography. We also have a membership to Mark Kistler's website to work on drawing skills. She has almost finished most of his video lessons. Music-Loosely based on BF History of Classical Music plus low key/when we have time, piano lessons from dad. PE(1 credit)-dance 10-12 hours a week. We also go to local indoor pool 2 times a week. Is there anything that I am missing. I want her to be challenged. I have gone a little to easy on her and need to step it up now that she is going to be in highschool.
  13. I checked out some of the signing time dvds from the library but haven't had a time to watch them. I will check out that website as well. Thanks! All my kids are wanting to learn but I didn't know where to start other than the videos at the library. My daughter wants to use sign language as her foreign language credit for highschool. So, I figured I better get started finding a curriculum.
  14. I need suggestions on ASL curriculum. I am wanting to do this with all my kids at once. Next year they will be 3rd, 5th, and 9th grades. Anyone have a program they have used and loved?
  15. My 2nd grader isn't a strong reader yet so here is what we are doing: Language Arts-CLP grade 1 Language Arts and WWE 1 Math- MUS Beta and EvanMoor Daily Word Problems Reading-He has a reading tutor and we also are working through easy readers and Explode the Code Books. Tons of read alouds for Literature, Natural History, and History History-we do some lapbooking, notebooking, watch some videos We are currently on the civil war. Science-Exploring Creation through Botany and Nature Study Bible-One story from Old Testament and one from the New Testament each week. Music-Hymns, composer study, and folk songs from AO schedule Art-Just whatever I come up with. Usually study one artist a month by watching a video and reading books about the artist and then doing a couple projects based on their art work and picture study. PE we swim 2 times a week.
  16. Our boys had so much fun. This was our first year with this troop and lets just say our new troop is very intense about the Pinewood Derby. We all had a blast. Ds9 got 5th place in his den and Ds7 got 2nd in his den and 5th in the finals. One of the dads made little car stands for all the kids and my boys are so trilled. It was a great day!:)
  17. Dance has been like this for us. Our dd started out dancing when she was 8. The cost wasn't to bad and only 2 classes a week. Now she is at the level where she is dancing 5 days a week and a total 11 hours a week. We had to buy three costumes this year, master classes every couple of months, summer intensive auditions $15-$30 for each audition, summer intensives that cost anywhere from $2000-6000!!(she isn't going but I am letting her try out) plus her studio's company is going to Austria this summer! Again dd isn't going. We are scrapping by to let her attend her classes and master classes but all the other extras are out. We will not go into debt for dance and dd understands that. Of course, almost all the other girls at her level at her studio are going away to summer intensives and to Austria and come dressed for class in the latest dance fashions. Luckily, my dd doesn't care what her leotard looks like. She is happy with her plan black leotard and pink tights. She says "I am just going to sweat in it!" :) Dd did get a little bummed when we told her there was no way she was going to Austria but she got over it real quick when she found out what the total cost was going to be. Plus, the thought of sending my 14 year old to a foreign country by herself freaked me out and wasn't going to happen even if we could afford it! ETA: Oh and fund raisers!! We pay a ton in tuition and other fee and we still have to do a fund raiser for the studio, fundraiser for the dance company AND separate fund raisers for the company to go to Austria.
  18. Just posted ours. I didn't do a full report this week. Just focused on my boys unit study on oceans.
  19. We have just been reading a couple of sections of a chapter each week and doing narrations. We have just got to oceans and are stopping to do a oceans lapbook/notebook. My kids did not go for doing the postcards. They have enjoyed the experiments. I think we will be able to stretch this book out over two years. My boys are 7 and 9.
  20. Ours is up. We had some great reading success this week!:)
  21. My kids love Cyberchase and Linnea in Monet's Garden. There are some about Tall Tales that they like. Also Jim Henson's Storytellers.
  22. We are using the 7th grade Language Arts with dd13. I had to have something more independent for her to do. She doesn't love it but is doing it. It is tough for her since Language Arts is a weak area for her but this program is helping. It took her a little while to get the hang of how the program works but she is doing well now. I love that it grades everything for me!:) We are also using 8th grade History.
  23. Just posted ours Short and sweet. We were off most of the week because of our ds's eye surgery.
