  1. I am pretty lax about this. I have shown my kids Italic, and let them tweak it. I just want their writing to be highly legible and neat. The actual "style" is up to them. I personally find the style of adults who write in very typically schoolish handwriting to be a bit dull. This includes my aunt, a retired elementary teacher, who writes in perfect D'Nealian. ;)
  2. I have observed that people seem to be double posting far more than usual. Also I experience long waits for my posts to "take," and then have had it appear to have gone through when in reality it did not. If you could look into that, it would be helpful. Thank you!
  3. People seem to be double posting all over the place. This is clearly a bug.
  4. I would take anyone coming and reorganizing my house. The routine will get back to normal. Really. My mom had my kids up after midnight after my youngest was born. Oh well. I was mad, but it was only one night. She meant well and she did do the best she could. I am sure she loves your kids. Don't hold it against her. Just take it as an effort that didn't come out right, but good intentions were there.
  5. It seems to have gone away. Under User CP, I am curious why it's an option to be notified if one receives a warning. Seemed funny.
  6. Curious what you think -when is this cool bilingualism and when is it linguistic confusion or laziness? I mean, people deride Spanglish and other "mutt" hybrids as signs that someone doesn't know either language. (Granted the use of "entree" should be fair game as it's a French word to begin with!)
  7. There was an issue of Odyssey maybe a year ago that was about controversies in science; the Darwin- ape cartoon (his head on ape body) was on the cover, as I recall. Other than that, I would say, it's not a major theme but occasionally comes up. Here are the planned themes for 2013 http://www.odysseymagazine.com/pages/futurethemes.asp I would think less so for Ask or Click.
  8. You can have mine! They're horrifyingly loud and they go off occasionally during cooking. This is a thought-provoking thread.
  9. I just found this old thread from Helena, with many contributions, for slightly older kids http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/showthread.php?t=363403 Lots of excellent suggestions there
  10. I would take with a grain of salt the oft-quoted statement that MEP's levels are +1 from the US, and to "translate," one should subtract a year. This would mean that Y1 is K, Y2 is 1st grade, Y3 is 2nd grade, and Y4 is 3rd grade. For example, in MEP Y2 the kids learn their times tables, with corresponding division. This is taught in Beast Academy year 3, and indeed many third grade programs. Certainly it would be inaccurate to say that learning the times tables is first grade work in most American schools! MEP Y1 concerns itself with numbers between 0 and 20. That does not mean the problems are lightweight or babyish. I would take a look at exercises from multiple levels of MEP before deciding on a level in any sort of conclusive fashion. There are some interesting problems throughout. MEP Primary page Scheme of Work for y1-y6 There is, however, some repetition. However, after Y2 of MEP, some of the problems in Beast Academy were very easy. So I don't think they line up particularly well. Unfortunately.
  11. I saw that, and saw that they provide an explanation.
  12. I am not sure, but I would like to say that I did once receive (unanticipated!) a whole bunch of nicely prepared material from the program, and to this day I am grateful. So I can see that someone would pay to avoid the hassle. If you do want to try to do this online, I'd have lots of clear photos to help convince people.
  13. Can you try to get the stain out? Zout works wonders for me. Or bleach! I got a bunch of sets on clearance for $5 about 5 years ago so haven't bought any since then, but my pillowcases from older sets are all ripping. Some of them are twenty years old! Ha. I used to get them at the outlet mall. Or sometimes TJMaxx has decent prices. I bought some Martha Stewart cotton sheets for my kids at Kmart once, they aren't bad. Ikea's look awful and thin. Seriously, check clearance everywhere you go. My husband just bought me a whole set at JCPenney for $20, inc comforter. I don't like the sheets, but I know my MIL will adore them. I am keeping the comforter.
  14. Colleges are known to have outbreaks of disease due to many in close quarters. Is the issue that she doesn't have proof or doesn't want to get needed shots? If she needs proof, have her call the doctor's, or go get the shots. The health dept may also be able to give them.
  15. I remember watching some of these and the teachers asked him to try teaching for himself. Did he ever take up their challenge?
  16. I totally agree. My husband's case was archived to S. Dakota before any decision was made! I had to involve my senator to get any action. I was actually impressed by their recent improvements; cases are moving much faster now.
  17. I had my son (at older than first grade) find the nouns in The Child's Own English Book. Be careful of the adjective section, there is an offensive exercise of describing people of different ethnicities I would not advise. I would suggest the easier sentences in something like KISS grammar. That is too hard.
  18. I use Red Star yeast (eta: no I don't! I have SAF instant), the sort King Arthur sells for $7. I buy it in 1lb bags for $3 or so. Instead of the envelopes of individual servings. I keep the bag in the freezer, and a small container in the frig. I would try skipping the refrigeration. Also, are you covering when you refrigerate? If they dry out, then the drust would prevent them from rising easily. Don't they puff up when they rise? I would also check you're not using too hot of water. Otherwise I would experiment with a pinch of yeast and a pinch of sugar in a cup, to see if it is alive at all.
  19. Could you interview the interpreter and ask how they would interpret certain things, and see what you think? And/or could you submit something to the lawyer discussing the key points as you see it? That way you present your understanding TO the lawyer? Not sure about the issue of privilege, though, and how this would complicate things. I watched a documentary about asylum and immigration, and in one segment the way the subtitled translations were written was totally different in places from what the translator was saying. I thought it was rather unfortunate. I also read an article about how asylum cases are being influenced by the constant pressure to make them very dramatic and extreme, and how, for example, almost all women "have to" say they were raped in an especially extreme way. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/12/nyregion/immigrants-may-be-fed-false-stories-to-bolster-asylum-pleas.html?pagewanted=all
  20. There are several health problems in women that WERE shown to be caused by the mother's medication. http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/medicaltreatments/des-exposure http://www.birthdefects.org/research/bendectin_1.php There is even a novel about a woman seeking revenge on the doctor who gave her a medicine while pregnant as part of a study The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady by Elizabeth Stuckey-French
  21. The woman who developed Gardasil is pretty clear, actually, that it is most effective in populations with high cervical cancer rates. 80% of cervical cancer occurs in the developing world. So therefore the number of women in the US with cervical cancer doesn't have much reducing to do. That doesn't mean it's a useless vaccine. Many women in the world never get pap smears, either. There is a HUGE room for improvement. According to the CDC, Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, in the past 40 years, the number of cases of cervical cancer and the number of deaths from cervical cancer have decreased significantly. This decline largely is the result of many women getting regular Pap tests, which can find cervical precancer before it turns into cancer. In 2008, just over 4000 women died of cervical cancer in the US. Compare that with women worldwide http://globocan.iarc.fr/factsheets/cancers/cervix.asp
  22. Yeah, that Lego Chima site didn't help. Try this http://www.thebrickfan.com/category/lego-legends-of-chima/
