  1. SWM is indeed tall... and I happen to love her pajama puffy pants.:D Me? I've got a half a baked brie with apricot preserves and toasted almonds on top. And crackers. Lots and lots of crackers... BTW, SWM... I'd like an English Breakfast tea with cream and sugar... heavy on the cream. :)
  2. Which one of the self-paced courses has your family completed? Do you have a favorite? I seem to be all over the place as to which one I'd like to choose (depends on which direction the wind is blowing, I suppose.:D) I think I may have it narrowed down to OT vs NT, but I'm not sure. The Explorers to 1815 looks fabulous but we're moving to DC in a year and I'm thinking about holding off on American History until then.
  3. I'm planning on signing my DC up for one of the VP Self-Paced History classes next year. I'm having a tough time deciding which one to put them in. I've looked at the demos for the different classes but don't see an actual scope and sequence for the information covered in each course. Am I missing this on the VP website, or is it not there? Also, if any of you have a favorite for one of the self-paced classes that your DC particularly loved please list it here. TIA!!
  4. It's Christmas. I'd blow off the assignment completely and tell him it's a gift.:D Ten years from now it won't matter that he skipped one writing assignment when he was 9. I'm usually a Nazi when it comes to school work, but hey, we all need a break sometimes. Just my 2 cents worth... feel free to ignore at will.
  5. :iagree: Sometimes it helps to narrow down an illness based on the type of WBC that is low...
  6. Another vote for Asher here... What about Hezekiah? It means "power from God".
  7. The huz and I will be moving to California for six months. We will start our school year in NV, work through most of the year in CA, and then likely finish our year in the DC area. Do you think I still need to file paperwork with the school board in CA? I looked at HSLDA and am still scratching my head in confusion over the exact HSing requirements/laws. Basically, I think I need to declare our homeschool a "private" school and that's it??? Or do I wait until we're in DC/VA and file paperwork there? Do both?:svengo: AACCKK!!:ack2: Thoughts? Advice?? Suggestions???
  8. Sending you a PM now... I need two slots. Thanks for doing this!!
  9. :hurray: Yay!! If we could wait until August to start our class that would be awesome. I would be interested in two slots for my DC. Please PM me with the details... thank you!!
  10. Thanks again for sharing this. Writing isn't my strong point and I would love to have SWB's "brain" via the TM...
  11. I'm an RN... FWIW I've seen several children come through the ER with shingles. It's not super common considering the number of children that are vaccinated, but it's not unheard of either. Antivirals can help but they don't shave off that many days of recovery. I would probably be more concerned about comfort/pain being managed than anything else. I hope she feels better soon... keep her comfortable, okay? Shingles are miserable....
  12. Is there a writing curriculum out there that is similar to Meaningful Composition without the christian content? I love the detailed instruction for the teacher and the student that MC seems to give, but would prefer to have less CC included for the writing assignments.

  15. Mine was $2000 in 1996... I'm almost embarrassed to admit what my sweet Daddy paid for it.
  16. Thoughts. I have them.:D I would not allow her to date a young man unless you meet him first. And by meeting, I mean a family dinner together to get to know him a bit. If he can survive dinner with the parents he's probably got potential.
  17. We had a similar issue of stomping in our house. I simply made my DS practice walking up and down the stairs without stomping... repeatedly... for an hour. If he stomped once the hour started over. (It was an hour and 11 minutes of Homeschool PE :D) We've never had it happen again.
  18. Yes... you were right! I misunderstood... she was talking about WWE not being a stand alone grammar program. Sorry for the confusion, ladies.:glare: I really appreciate your insight and advice.
  19. I'm trying to figure out how I can combine my two DC next year on history. The VP self-paced history class looks like something my 4th grader would love... would it be too juvenile for a 7th/8th grader? Do you think there is a way I could flesh it out a bit more and add in something more challenging for my older DD, or should I simply go with two different history curricula?
  20. I'm probably in the minority here, but I loved Rod and Staff spelling. If your DC is a natural speller I would use the next grade up, and if they struggle a bit, use it on grade level. Here's an excerpt on the description of their spelling program: 34 weekly lessons. The Grade (2) Spelling workbook offers exercises for 12 words in each of the 34 weekly lessons except the review lessons. Each 2-page lesson has 2 main parts. Part "A" serves to strengthen the pupil's understanding of the meaning of the new words as they work with synonyms, antonyms, definitions, picture clues, context clues, and categories of words. In Part "B," pupils work with phonetic patterns as beginning and ending sounds, long and short vowels, consonant blends, digraphs, double consonants, and so forth. Part "B" teaches word structure as syllables, plurals, verb forms, and suchlike. The lessons were quick and painless and my DD loved them.... her retention of the spelling words she had each week was wonderful as well.
  21. Ruth, I'll have a 4th grader and 8th grader next year. Would you recommend IEW for my 4th grader? Can you share your thoughts on why you prefer IEW for the younder kiddos?
