Need ideas for baby bok choy and kale
iamrachelle replied to Gailmegan's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I actually leave it whole, brush it with a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt and grill it out. Delicious!! -
Do your kids believe in Santa?
iamrachelle replied to matrips's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Santa doesn't visit for those who don't believe... Of course, at 11yrs and 8yrs of age the cries of, "I believe, I believe..." from my dc have turned comical. We have fun with it, but no, they know he is a myth. -
What is the best response...(sensitive issue)
iamrachelle replied to Ginevra's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Definitely try to find something personal to say about the baby along with a big hug and congratulations. My son was born with bilateral hip dysplasia (completely correctable but he wore a pavlik harness for 9 months...) He looked odd strapped into this contraption and people that were close friends of ours didn't handle it well. We heard a lot of, "What's wrong with him," and "Gee, is he going to be okay?" more than I thought we would. I remember standing over his isolette in the NICU and my Dad walked up, put his arm around me and said, "Don't worry sweetheart, every issue he has can be corrected... just remember, you can't fix ugly. At least we're not dealing with that.":D First time I had laughed in weeks.... -
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
iamrachelle replied to inmyopinion's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I read it... and to be honest I'm still not sure how I feel about the book. There was a part of me that was horrified by how she treated her children, and another that was slightly in awe. I did think it was interesting that she wasn't offended by her MIL's complaints of inadequate cheese and wine for the party but that she was happy because it meant her DC would have discerning taste. I guess it's all a matter of perspective. -
Deciding on "elective" surgery for children- (CP)
iamrachelle replied to Paige's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:iagree: I am a registered nurse and love the doctors and nurses at Shriners. It sounds like you have a lot of different options... too many to explore given the time constraints of needing the surgery done sooner rather than later. I would seek an evaluation at Shriners and go with whatever their recommendation is. You can let the physician know there that you do have insurance... believe it or not most of the shriner's hospital accept insurance now (actually I can't think of any that don't) so you should be okay to go there even with insurance. IMHO, they're the best at what they do and I wouldn't hesitate to go there for a second opinion. You can discuss the less invasive surgery offered in Texas and see what their thoughts are on that procedure as well. Good luck with whatever you decide... and let us know too!!:001_smile: -
Feeling REALLY good about homeschooling!!
iamrachelle replied to Dmmetler's topic in General Education Discussion Board
That is awesome. -
Interesting poll... I live in a major metropolitan city. Seems like there are quite a few more homeschoolers in large cities. Think that's because of the increase in population or poor school choices?

Poll: how many here have lived overseas?
iamrachelle replied to Mrs Mungo's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I've lived all over the world... Europe, Africa, Asia and the US. Each country has been fabulous and a wonderful experience for our family. -
Was I disrespectful to my dd?
iamrachelle replied to Janie Grace's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't have a lot of time this morning but I did want to say that I had something similar happen with my tween. She too was upset and embarrassed that she had forgotten to give me a message (and that I "blamed" her) but it also hasn't happened again. I think the entire experience helped to make her very conscientious about passing on messages in a timely manner. You should definitely let her know that you understand it wasn't intentional on her part and an accident. These things happen... no biggie. I don't think you overreacted, sometimes these things end up making us a bit more responsible. It did with my DD. -
Bashed on FB for schooling my own kids!

Need english advice, please
iamrachelle replied to wy_kid_wrangler04's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
wy_kid... I hate to hijack your post but I was looking at BJU for us next year. Can you tell me what you don't like about BJU writing? I'll have a 7th and 4th grader next year and I've heard that BJU really changes up their grammar/writing in 7th so I'm doubly worried about switching over to them next year. I stumbled across Analytical Grammar the other day. I haven't used it or seen it in person yet but I know it seems popular on the boards and it looks really good. Have you checked that one out yet? -
One of each here....

A Poll Just for Parrothead
iamrachelle replied to Jean in Newcastle's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm a twin and my parents used to affectionally refer to us as the "terror twins". My halo is there... maybe a little bent after a wild year and a half in college (met my dh and I was off the market and totally straigtened out my wayward ways. :D) I actually think my parents did an asesome job of favoring both of us in our own unique ways. I felt loved and cherished... still do. -
:bigear: Anyone?

How do I cook dried black-eyed peas?
iamrachelle replied to melissel's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:iagree: The only thing I would add are a couple of slices of raw bacon cut up into the pot when you put the peas on to boil (bring them to a boil first and then let 'em simmer until they're done). It adds a wonderful flavor... and it's how we roll down south. Lots and lots of pork products.:D -
In regards to the previous thread asking about Saxon Grammar & Writing. I understand that the grammar portion is comprehensive and includes writing, dictation and some vocabulary. Do you think that the writing portion is comprehensive enough or would you need to supplement with something else (like IEW)?

Requesting prayers for a young widow~
iamrachelle replied to Blueridge's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We will be praying here too... -
You've received some great suggestions for additional side dishes so I won't provide any more... but how about dessert? We love Lemon Pie around here and it is easy to make: 1 carton of cool whip 1/2 can of thawed (frozen) lemonade 1 can of eagle brand condensed milk 1 graham cracker crust Mix the first three ingredients together and pour in the pie shell. Chill for several hours. If I'm feeling fancy I'll throw some fresh raspberries on top when I serve or some toasted sliced almonds... or both.:D Enjoy!!
