  1. I found a study guide for the book. Thought maybe it would help someone. http://polar.alaskapacific.edu/edted/NOVA3/Science_matters.htm#Chapters%20%201%20-%202: RhondaM.
  2. I had an easy recovery too. My ds was over 9lbs and was 2 weeks early. His shoulders just would not go through. Had a c-section w/ a great doctor. Was at the mall just days later with my newborn and 4 yr old shopping for a bday gift for my dad. I wasn't able to go for long, but only because of feeling a little weak. About a month after his birth I went to a ladies retreat where I had to climb stairs and hop up on the top bunk of a bunk bed. I was really too weak to be doing it still....and I should NOT have been doing those things probably, but I was never in any pain from the c-section. I was not super young by the way (almost 30) nor in tip top shape. I've known people to have longer recoveries with a VB than I did w/ a c-section. I think it could depend on your doctor too. My sister in law had two c-sections with the same doctor I used. With both she had a fast recovery just as I did. With her third c-section she had a different doctor (she had moved from Houston to Dallas) and she had a long hard recovery. RhondaM.
  3. Could you please tell me how are you doing both Maxim/Chreia in a year? Skipping certain weeks? Combining weeks? Is there a schedule for this? Thanks, RhondaM.
  4. I don't have the link but Laura K (NC) wrote up some history questions on the high school board. Hope this helps.
  5. I agree w/ what she said. Also, we are currently using R&S 3 as a workbook. It is working fine for us. RhondaM.
  6. According to the WW point calculator: http://www.webmilhouse.com/pointcalc.php a shake is 1 point. The back of the shake box says 100 calories, 0.5 fat and 4g. fiber. My plan, when I switch is to not go back to softdrinks, and keep away from high carbs. I did not do well w/ South Beach but I think I needed to add in exercise as well as pay attention to calories as well as carbs. I think eating 5-6 small meals is much better than 3 big meals...and water. I have to learn to drink water!!! I'd also planned to keep some Medifast shakes and bars around. RhondaM.
  7. I've been using Medifast for almost 9 weeks and have lost 16 lbs so far. I started at 167 and am now at 151. My goal is to at least get to 140. The food is not bad, but I'm starting to get bored with it. With the Holidays coming up I think I'm going to want to eat more of my own food, plus I really don't want to fork out 300+ dollars for food with Christmas and three birthdays coming. I was thinking about switching to WW, but I'm afraid if I switch too fast I may actually gain weight. I have about 3 weeks of Medifast food left. What would you do? 1. Switch now to WW, using my three weeks of food as sort of transition. Or 2. Use my three weeks of food to loose 6 more lbs (which will bring me to 145) then switch cold turkey to WW. 3. Or should I just stick with Medifast until I get to 140, then do the Medifast transition, only going to WW later just to maintain good eating habits. I really, really want to do this right. Medifast has been so expensive (but easy) that I don't want to loose any ground. This has been my first real diet (tried South Beach several years back but never lost anything.) so I have no idea what my body will do once it encounters real food again. RhondaM.
  8. See I was thinking more of having him shut down his computer down for the night then it needing a password when it was turned back on. (This is what I'd have to check on.) It would be too much of a pain to have one that kicked in every time the screen saver came on. For him. Rhonda
  9. Just wanted to comment on this (still reading everyone's suggestions). The computer that she sneaks off to does not have internet access. Just games that she is allowed to play. I don't have to worry about content. Also, it is not in her room...but in my older son's room. Yesterday I asked him to put a password on it, but I'll have to check it every night to make sure it gets done. Thanks so far to everyone. Rhonda
  10. Ok, I can agree that she needs more exercise. I need to put the trampoline to use as well as getting her to do some other activities. And I'll also admit that she has always been the type of kid who only needed 4-5 hours of sleep and she is ready to get up. So she slept last night from 8-12. Typical. But if allowed to stay up and read, she falls back asleep at 4 or 5 or 6am and then is not ready to get up at 7 or 8 am. This has happened over and over for a long long time. If allowed, this same child who has been up all night (or most of the night) has NO problems sleeping in until noon on Saturdays. I rarely allow this to happen, but it has happened on several occasions, and believe me she could sleep in like this every morning. So, sleeping is not a problem for her. I have an older child who was born a night owl. I always allowed him to stay up and read as late as he wanted and get up around 11 am or so. When he hit 10 yrs old he suddenly started sleeping earlier and getting up earlier all on his own. But I never had a problem with this kid getting up and playing and getting on the computer ...not until he got a bit older. But my dd won't just stay in bed and read. She gets up and plays, and gets on the computer. She is very...errr...passive agressive. Thus she had no problem just sitting on the couch all day. I understand night owls, I understand her needing more exercise...but this is an obedience issue. Trust me. Rhonda
  11. My dd is almost 9. Because I cannot get her to go to bed and stay in bed at night she has been recently told that when I tell her to go to SLEEP that she is to stay in bed, no getting up to play or read, and that she is to stay in bed until 6 am or be in trouble. So...the night before last I sent everyone to bed about 9pm. I went to bed. I woke at 11:30 and checked on the kids. My dd was on the computer in her older brother's room. I sent her to bed. I woke up at almost 4 am and she was on the computer again! I sent her to bed. So I got her up at about 9 yesterday morning. I did not allow her to amuse herself all day. No games, no computer, no reading (except assigned reading), no playing, NOTHING! I made her sit all day either at the table to get all her work or on the couch. I did not allow her to nap. She did not complain, she just sat there as she was told. We had a late dinner last night because my dh worked late. After dinner I sent her to bed. I explained that if I found her up later in the night that she would have another day of just sitting doing nothing but schoolwork. She went right to sleep. At midnight I found her sitting up in bed reading. I fussed at her, explained that she would have another do nothing day. I took her book and her glasses and set them on the desk and went to bed. This morning I checked on her and the book and glasses were both in her bed!!! She absolutely refuses to obey. Please offer some suggestions as to how to handle this. RhondaM.
  12. For such a long time all dh and I have done for dates is go have a nice dinner and then make a trip to B&N. Lately we've been talking about trying to find something new to do. I'm thinking a comedy club would be fun...but also, I'd love to go to a place where we can sit and listen to live music. We are NOT into the nightclub/dancing/meat market scene. We'd just like a place to go and talk and listen to good music, maybe have some appitizers and hang with some friends. A place that is suited to people in their 40s, not just filled with kids. We are in Houston. Are there places like that around? What are these places called...not Nightclubs, right? Also, any other ideas? What do you do with your dh when you want to get out and do something a little special? Thanks, RhondaM.
  13. We used the Christine Miller/Guerber books a few years back along with Truthquest (MA and R&R) along with Knowledge Quest Maps. Worked really well for us. RhondaM.
  14. Thanks ladies. I bought R&S 3 yesterday and I think it is just what we need. The activities look good (easy!) too. RhondaM.
  15. I'm considering it for grade 3. I need something easy to use because I have a VERY bad habit of putting science off and not getting it done. Didn't R&S recently upgrade their 3rd (or 4th) grade and higher workbooks? Anywayt, anyone use them? Do you like them? Do they work? Thanks RhondaM.
  16. Name-o. Because Bingo was his Name-o. My oldest who was 4 at the time picked that one. :-) RhondaM.
  17. I sort of hesitate to say it to some people, depending on the circumstances. To others I freely say it. I see it as a figure of speach. And no, I never get offended when anyone says it to me. But then, I'm not easily offended. I did get out my Bible, Strong's Concordance, Merium Webster online Dictionary and The New College Latin and English Dictionary to help me look into this...because I was curious...here os what i found: Merium Webster: luck: 1. a. A force that brings good fortune or adversity. b. the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual. 2. favoring chance The New College Latin & English Dictionary: fortuna: chance, luck, fate, fortune, good luck, ..... I Sam. 6:9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us. (Strong's Concordance for this verse is 4745 in the Hebrew section: something met with, i.e. an accident or fortune: - something befallen, befalleth, chance, event) Eccl. 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill: but time and chance happeneth to them all. (Strong's Concordance for this verse is 6294 in the Hebrew section: impact (casual): - chance, occurrent.) Luke 10:31 And by chance there came down a certain priest.... (Strong's Concordance for this verse is 4795 in the Greek section: concurrence, i.e., accident: - chance.) After looking at all of this I don't see saying I hope I have good luck today being any different than I hope my chances are good today. Though I'd rather say I hope God blesses this. RhondaM.
  18. Pamela, For the last few weeks I've been using my Strongs Concordance to help me study scripture. So when you mentioned the word luck in the Bible I went to my concordance to find where it mentioned it in the Bible as well as to find the Greek or Hebrew meaning for it. My Strongs does not even list the word. Is it a word similar to luck you are meaning, or is Strongs lacking many of the words in the Bible? Thanks, RhondaM.
  19. I agree, Phonic Pathways is soooo easy. Takes only a few minutes a day. Totally painless. Love ETC too. RhondaM.
  20. Yes, my ds will be in 8th this fall. We will be reading parts 1-3 of Paul Johnson's History of the American People. Along with that we will also read through chapters 14-21 of Spielvogel's Western Civilization, and all of The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Government. We are going to try to follow the directions given in the new WTM for R stage work to see if that is going to work for us for highschool. RhondaM.
  21. You might be interested in this link. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105984 Hope this helps. RhondaM.
  22. How much American History has your junior high child had? Have you ever looked at Guerber's Story of the Thirteen Colonies and Story of the Great Republic? (It only goes up through about 1899-1900) If my dc had not already read them I'd have him read them this year. In the back of each book there is a list of books to go along with different chapters from the book. You can see samples of these at Nothing New Press. RhondaM.
  23. PH has a Chemistry book. I think you can get text, the teacher's key and possibly other support material from Kolbe Academy. RhondaM.
