  1. I think Odyssey is the one that is more engaging if I remember correctly. Well good then. That makes me happy not to have to wade through both. :svengo:
  2. I am a bit worried about Homer. Looks awful. I actually have Homer (both), but it's in story form. Could that be used? And, do you have to read both?
  3. I'm curious to know what you all think of MFW AHL. How long does it take? What would you say the pros and cons are to it? Did your kids like Homer or was it awful?
  4. We used this in the past and dd did extremely well with it. In fact, it caught her up. The only thing I didn't like was that every other grade is the same. So 6th is the same but more and 8th is the same but more. She did so well that I think she could have gone from 4th to 6th and again to 8th. Contemplating it again.
  5. These are fantastic ideas! So then it looks like you put them in charge and give them a basic list of what you expect? DD LOVES to read as well, but she wanted more facts this year. Coming from HOD it's quite a change for mom. If feel scattered. So we're doing Abeka history, but I dislike the work in it. I do however like the chapter reviews that contains a list of important people and events. I could have her choose from the list and do the research on it. I'm also integrating some Civics. But just one research paper per chapter doesn't seem to be nearly enough for this level. Kareni, I'd be interested in knowing more of what this Book of Centuries looks like! I like that. We have a timeline, but I'm not loving it. This idea seems more interesting. Momling I like your schedule and the outlining - reading the entire chapter over a few days. Happypamama I also like your primary source reads and analysis assignments. Mmmm...good stuff ladies.
  6. IMO, you don't "need" a reading program with HOD. All the storytime boxes through the levels contain elements already contained in Dithor. Not only that, there is plenty of reading and narration, written and oral throughout the programs to be quite enough. Once in middle school however, I'd use something for analyzing lit, whether it's Dithor or something else. So depending upon the grade level, I would recommend nothing for under grade 7.
  7. What type of assignments, activities or work do you do for 8th grade history? And how often? I'm trying to plan and don't know what is to be expected. Plus, I'm trying to combine a few programs and need some ideas on enough vs too much :confused1: .
  8. Yes, that's what I meant. I didn't realize it was for 9th. I thought it was for 11th. :)
  9. We're using BJU AR and I hate it. It's details upon details upon details. I don't like the Act Guide... mostly regurgitation. And it's so not homeschool friendly. More isn't better. It's just more. Almost out of level IMO. Beautiful book, but it's too much. I think too much detail that you can't really grasp the overall view of some things, because of it. I'm convinced BJU doesn't want you to use their product unless it's through DL. ;) Notgrass appeared more friendly but there are no samples of their review book, so I can't get a feel for anything outside of the text. I despise comprehension questions and looking for something of value there.
  10. This history program for high school, would you say is suitable for 8th grade or would you say it's too difficult? America the Beautiful is certainly far from 8th grade level, so I thought perhaps the high school version of this text may be more suitable. And if so would it be only the text and not the work or both are suitable or not? What do you all think?
  11. What do you mean by redesign vs classic. I guess I'm not well versed enough in TOG to know what you mean here. :)
  12. So I was finally able to sit through the video of how TOG works online. Painful, but interesting. ;) Can you use books you already own instead of those specific selections, or would the notes then be no longer applicable?
  13. I think BJU is great info and a strong program. But it's very technical with terminology. I find it hard to follow, because it reads like a dictionary. The AG doesn't always go in order either and some of it is just busy work, IMO. It's dry. Good info, but very dry.
  14. Limon to 76 is absolutely awful. :svengo: I remember Limon area well which is why I inquired on the "other" route.
  15. Mmm...so is Limon to the 76, but at least Limon is a hub :) Thanks. Looks like a longer stretch of isolation up though up to the 76. Thanks.
  16. Can anyone tell me what the road is like between Trinidad CO and La Junta CO. My AAA trip tik takes me through there and I've always gone through Colorado Springs north through Limon up to Nebraska. I don't know this route???? Any helps? I want to make sure it's not mountainous switchbacks or the scenic drive that takes us at 25 mph.
  17. Yes, they're in the Solutions & Test Manual, although the form isn't quite as friendly as I would like. They don't specifically call them "On Your Own."
  18. I'm starting to see that. Thanks. Unfortunate.
  19. Has anyone taken the plunge to use any Master Books programs for the middle school levels? Studies in World History - any one of the three looks really good to me, but I can't get a feel for any assignments that it may have. I also can't tell if it's telling history or if it's more political or theological discussions through history. A mix is good, but I can't tell if it's one or the other or a bit of both. Skills for Literary Analysis looks very good too. Any users?
  20. Oh, please, please, can I see your plans? I'll pm you. I'm actually looking at it for 8th.
  21. Yes, thanks, but ATB is not enough for us, coming from where we have been in the past. I'll just have to do a lot of lesson planning. I will say I did love it, just not for 8th grade. :)
