  1. I would like to sign my dd up for Stanford's EPGY open enrollment and need to find a group leader. EPGY is an important part of her hs plan for this year. My understanding is that melmichigan is a group leader however i have been unable to get her to respond to my Private Messages - perhaps she is not seeing them. Any other group leaders I can contact? Thanks in advance.
  2. What extracurricular activities are available during the High School years? The High School years are some years away for us. However, we like to provide some social interaction through extracurricular activities. In the elementary and early middle school years meeting this goal is easy. There are many obvious activities to choose from - for example boy/girl scouts, local park and rec sports, art classes, church youth groups etc. It is less obvious to me what extracurricular activities are available for the late middle and especially high school years (here in CT public and private school sports are not an option). What scheduled extracurricular activities have you done during High School? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
  3. I am aware of a number of computer or internet based math fact programs. In fact, we use Xtramath and Aleks quicktables (both are very good). My question seeks a particular ability in a math fact program that I have been unable to locate. Do you know of a math fact program that would allow me to set/chose the math fact problems presented? By this I don't mean setting a range of problems such as what Math Facts Now allows. I mean choosing the actual facts such e.g. 5+1, 6+2 etc. Thanks in advance.
  4. I know that traditionally many families have switched to Saxon at 5/4 favoring its format over Saxon K-3. More recently, Saxon has made available its Intermediate 3 (I3) book written by Stephen Hake. Mr. Hake is also the author of 5/4. The format of I3 and the later Saxon books are practically identical. Has anyone considered switching to Saxon earlier with I3, as opposed to 5/4?
  5. We are current subscribers to Dreambox learning. Our experience has been mixed. In the end my dd learned a fair amount from the program. But that knowledge required a fair amount of explanation from me. Some of the virtual manipulatives used, and their related concepts, came quickly to my dd. Some proved useless for her even with my attempts at explanation. IMHO, Dreambox is a fair tool/supplement. As suggested, it is not a full curriculum nor is Dreambox spiral or incremental in nature. I am off to review mathwhizz. Any other ideas?
  6. Do you know of an online or computer math curriculum which uses a spiral or incremental approach? I would like to review such a curriculum for my dd 7 (1st grade). It is possible I will use Horizons or CLE math. However, on certain days other time commitments make it impossible to work with her. A computer based program she can use independently would help. I have considered Stanford's EPGY but experienced parents on this forum suggest the program is mastery based and short on review. I favor repetition. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
