  2. Have you checked disboards.com for info. They are a great place for info on Disney and they have several threads on Irma going. They have cast members advising (unofficially) and have all kinds of info up. Might help make your decision.
  3. My son went to D.C. For his 8th grade trip. It was around 1k but they did fundraising for it all three years of junior high. For every whatever they sold, a portion went towards the trip so In the end we paid significantly less. They went in June after graduation. They also went to Great America in the spring.
  4. We used the elementary version of this for middle school and he loved it. We were trying a different one for high school and he just asked me, three days into the new year, to get this one again. He doesn't like the other one we got. Sigh.
  5. Intro to Algebra 11 to the end of the book iirc. But it's not exactly what would normally be covered and it's considered Honors level.
  6. We were tossing around ideas as she talked about finishing early. She is the youngest of her friends and I think that gave her some pause knowing she'd be alone when all her friends went off to college. Being 13, that made her sad. Since I didn't know what, if anything, would effect college, I told her I would ask. Everything is most definitely in pencil as she is still constantly changing things up on me. She just added an additional history class she wants to learn about last night. I did tell her I would do the record keeping as if she were doing ninth so we didn't close any doors and could decide in three years. But I wanted to get some info under my belt. I appreciate the help. I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that both my children may be out of the house in four (-5) years. This all snuck up on me.
  7. We are not sure when we would start college. She's currently eighth but about ready to start high school. We are weighing the pros and cons of starting now (essentially skipping 8th), starting in six months (where I think she'd be most ready to start), or waiting until her actual time but taking more DE (but fear getting too many credits). Guess that's the problem of having a January bday and having done school Jan-Dec instead of a regular school year most of your life. I'm not sure, if she graduated in December, if there would be issues with scholarships (she will need financial assistance) or with admittance into college. She wants to go into Forensics or other biological science if that makes any difference. Would working after high school in the spring be looked down on? Would it make her financial aid change (I'm guessing yes)? How about volunteering? Would it be kinda like a "gap year" except a few months short?
  8. Anyone have thoughts on the pro and cons of finishing high school in December instead of in the spring for a college bound student?
  9. My mom told me that if I showered the first day of my period it would stop it and that that was bad. I never understood that at all. Why wouldn't you want to stop it? Besides the first day of my period I usually feel grossest (it's usually my heaviest day). I spent years not being allowed to shower the first day of my period before I found a way to shower before she could stop me.
  10. Check with your local museums also. Ours are selling some for $2-3.
  11. My children have never had the privilege of picking out there own beds. They know that's not an expense we can afford. Both have hand me down frames. We have decorated in other ways. My daughter painted her own room and picked out her own bed spread during a Black Friday sale. We have always been upfront as to what we can afford and what we are willing and able to spend our money on.
  12. We had something similar happen. Enjoy that vacation, create memories with the kids, regroup, and when you get back you'll be all the more ready to face the challenges life throws your way.
  13. I'm amused that you want eagles in your daydreams. ;). I have one that's like me, surprisingly my dancer, and one that is not, and he's always been able to "see numbers in his head". Picture something. Haha. Who would have thunk?!
  14. We fly Spirit when we have no need to carry anything but a carry on/purse. Each person gets a small backpack with a whatever they need. We have had no probably and it's great to get from here to there on the cheap. But I tend to pack tight and well.
  15. I have aphantasia. I do not see pictures, hear words, smell smells. It's like a knowing. When I dream, it's not in pictures but I have "vivid" dreams (and nightmares) but with no pictures. When I close my eyes, it is all black. If I try to visualize a red triangle, I cannot. Of course, I know what a red triangle looks like but I don't see it. I cannot conjure up a picture of my children though I know what they look like. When I first found out that when people said to "close your eyes and picture" something they actually pictured it, I was blown away. When I get a "song stuck in my head" I don't actually hear it, I just think about it. I have never experienced conjuring up a smell. I think I would be really weirded out to see what wasn't there or hear what isn't playing.
  16. My son was terminal at birth. Luckily the hospital allowed us to take him home on a DNR (do not resuscitate). Once we left we were able to find someone to work with us. He had his final surgery last year and is going into high school. Although he may have some learning disabilities, he's not dead and he can be a productive member of society. He is no longer terminal thanks to an experimental procedure or two. The surgeons that worked with us were able to refine the experimental procedure and it is now used in other cases like his, at a younger it, with high success. Doctors are not gods and they call it the PRACTICE of medicine for a reason. Parents are the ones who need to live with the decision for the rest of their lives. They should have the final say, barring any outlying mental health or criminal issues, after all the information as they know it are presented. And second opinions should be mandatory, including a transfer to another hospital, if the parents and doctors disagree and the parents request one.
  17. My Dd hated restrictive so we went with camis for a long time. Once that wouldn't work, she went with a sports bra. She rarely wears anything else.
  18. At 14, no I would not. If something were to happen you'd be in real trouble with Dcfs. I understand as I have a very responsible daughter and I'm often tempted to leave her for extended periods of time but overnight is different. You might also check your local laws. Some states have "guidelines" for overnight.
  19. I wonder if this place might have some ideas. I've been thinking about using them for my son with LDs and meds are one of his issues. http://cipworldwide.org
  20. We have done the dance studio search in three cities, two states now and I can assure you it's all about the studio. Go in and look at the costume book, look at the photos on their website, and view their videos online.m Here is my daughter's award winning hip hop number. There is no sexy in those costumes and the dancing, imho, is quite mild. Girls are 8-18yo. Her studio doesn't particularly work hard to do modest. Do the oldest girls in competition do things that push the limit? Sometimes. But they are also mostly 16-18. However, our rec classes our quite tame.
  21. My son requested to attend after a move and continual butting heads with me. He's way more social/extroverted and needed more daily interaction than I could give, he had special needs that our new district was willing and able to meet, and our relationship needed serious changes so that we could interact better. It has worked very well for him.
  22. Not an object, but the strangest thing I passed were two grown men riding a motorized cooler. No, not scooter, COOLER. It was actually several coolers strapped together somehow like a train. And they were riding it along the side of the highway. It was most bizarre.
  23. Make sure they are using the breastfed babies chart and not the regular charts. I'd like to assume they are using the right growth charts but, alas, most don't and breastfed babies have a different growth chart.
  24. Thank you. This is a great start. I'll take a look at those recommendations, too.
  25. My 13yo did has asked for a writing bootcamp of sorts. I have tried a few different programs but I'd like to pull something together that helps me help her write. I'm looking for something that starts with the basics (how to write a proper sentence) and quickly progresses to meatier topics (essays, reports, etc). Anything out there? Kinda like a reference guide of writing or something?
