  1. Thank you everyone for sharing. I am torn between Biblioplan or TRISMS. I love that TRISMS is so easy to customize. I already own IEW. And my children who aren't used to such academic rigors as TRISMS puts forth could divide up the work between them. Share the work load-help each other out. One concern is the level of the lit excerpts and the fact that there is so much research that I'm wondering if it will become monotonous to fill out these forms each week. I've never seen it represented at any convention I've been to so have never been able to look at it other than the sample on their website. I would love to be able to see what the lit excerpts look like, etc. It would be nice if they could share the first couple of units of each level like Tapestry of Grace or Biblioplan does. That way you could actually try it out or at least see it to get a better feel for it. I have researched this our last two school years but then opted not because I don't know enough about it. Thanks again, Tracy
  2. Thank you 1togo. very helpful. would love to hear from others if there's anyone else out there who has used it. Thanks, Tracy
  3. likes? Dislikes? I'm thinking of using this with my 3 high school age kids. thanks,
  4. Oh my goodness! This looks perfect! Thank you! THank you! I have the Singapore workbooks in the back of my mind for later in case we need them. Saw them at the bookstore the other day. I was just hoping to not spend money on word problems for the time being. So the website you recommended looks awesome! :001_smile: Thanks again!
  5. I can't find the original post from the search I did, but if I remember right this is what I did. Locate the thread on the For Sale/Swap board where the item was listed. You will need to copy the URL to that thread. (right click and select copy) Next, click on the seller's name (from that same page) and go to their profile. Then, click "view all feedbacks for" and then click "submit feedback for" then you paste the URL in the box. You will see a place to leave comments. Hope that works for you.
  6. I am looking for an online source for word problems for my middle school kids. Preferably fraction/decimal word problems. They can do computations but when given word problems they really struggle. I would love to find a source where I could just print out some pages of word problems for them to work on throughout the week. Does anyone have a good source? I would also love to find some mindbender type problems like they have in some of the critical thinking type books or Math for Smarty Pants. Any online source for those types of problems? Thanks so much!
  7. Nevermind, I figured it out by reading previous threads. THanks!
  8. I can't seem to figure out how to leave feedback for a transaction here on these boards. I know I've done it in the past but I can't for the life of me figure it out now. Thanks!
  9. Thank you ladies. I will look into that. The price is definitely good. Anyone else have experience w Wordsmith Craftsman or Writing Strands Expository writing?
  10. Has anyone used these two books? Would you recommend Wordsmith Craftsman or Writing Strands Writing Expositions for teaching the essay? I own Craftsman but have never seen Writing Strands Writing Expositions. Thanks!
  11. Great thread. Thank you! I loved hearing what your sons thoughts were on what he thought was the most helpful things to know. It has made me rethink what I was planning to do. :)
  12. Wondering if anyone could compare these two for me. I already own Wordsmith Craftsman but I see that Bravewriter's Help for High School is half price this saturday. I own the Writer's Jungle so I am familiar with the Bravewriter philosophy and I love it. Do you think Wordsmith will do the same thing? thank you!
  13. Has anyone used Wordsmith Craftsman to teach essay writing? If so how do you feel it worked for you? Do you wish you would have used something different? Pros and cons? Thanks so much!
  14. Thank you again, everyone! Lori D., thank you for all the details in your post above. Have had a busy weekend but hoping to look into it more this week. I need to do something soon.:tongue_smilie:
  15. Where would I find Conceptual Chemistry? Is this something she can do in her own? Thanks for the help.
  16. Thank you so much, everyone of you! I love getting to come here to get suggestions and help. Thank you Lori for all the links and threads. Still researching these. If anyone else has anything to offer I will gladly look into it :001_smile:
  17. I would love some suggestions on what to use for kids who are more dance/arts/language arts oriented. I would love to hear what others have used besides Apologia. We have the Apologia material and it does not click with my students. It's to hard for them to understand. I need biology and pysical science recommendations. Of course will consider other areas of science as well since I don't think we are locked into the basic college bound science courses. Thanks so much!
  18. Ruth Thank you for all the time you have put into answering my questions. I really appreciate it. I am relieved to find out that my children don't have to go through 3 high school textbooks in a year to do what you are doing. :D My children really struggle w/ apologia. I think for someone who is already very science minded they may enjoy it more. I think my kids would more enjoy books from the library like you're talking about. Thanks!
  19. Brownie, I have spoken to Art Reed on several occassions. He has a 1-800 number and is very helpful. I highly recommend his DVDs by the way. We were using Saxon in the wrong way and my daughter was failing. Went back to use it the way he recommended 90's and 100's on all of her tests now. I digress though. To answer your question about missing something in 8/7 as opposed to 1/2, he says that they are very similar in content with 8/7 starting out slower and with more review of the previous year than 1/2. Alg 1/2 starts right in at a faster pace w/o as much review. Definitely take the free online placement tests. It only takes a little bit of time and may save you much money and time. We came to saxon from another curriculum and I just went ahead and put them in the next grade. Sigh.......struggles. They were not prepared. Hope that helps and didn't come across as bossy. :D
  20. Ruth, Just to make sure I'm understanding you, are you saying that you would use one high school text book in one term or over the course of the whole year? For instance we have Apologia textbook for my 2 oldest and I can't imagine finishing that in less than a whole school year. If we weren't doing the experiments as we went then of course we could finish up maybe two months early leaving time for the science fair type project but there's no way we could get another high school text in there. My kids are not huge fans of science. They love documentaries, Modern Marvels, Good Eats, Nova etc. and talking to their dad about sciency things, my son is always looking up "cool" experiments and stuff on youtube and then he tries to recreate a lot of it at home. But when it comes to "school" science. Blah....no fun! Torture. Therefore we end up not getting much done. My 2 high schoolers are using apologia and do it on their own so they are getting it done. Not really liking it so much but they do it. However, with my 2 middle schoolers it's just not happening. We usually find ourselves doing the reading and then skipping the weekly experiments until I finally force myself to just get it done and have a marathon day of experiments. Again, not really fun. Well, I'm rambling as usual. :) Thank you for answering my questions. Definitely rethinking what we are doing.
  21. Ruth, I copied and pasted your first post into a word doc to print and keep. I am calling it Science the Sane Way. :D It seems so much more simple and doable. And I totally get what you were saying about most experiments are really just demonstrations. My kids will often ask why they have to do the experiment because they can just finish reading about it in the book or the book has already told them what will happen. After reading your post I realized that my kids (mostly my son) already "do science" the sane way. He is always researching stuff on the internet that is of interest to him. He has spent the last to days experimenting with hooking up a small speaker that he took out of a metronome and has wired it and hooked it up to his sister's ipod. Well, actually the reason for my post was to say thank you and to see if you could answer a few questions. I was wondering if there was a way that you could do this all the way through high school? Could you take a high school science course you are already using (apologia) and do it in this way? What might that look like? Especially if you have to have a lab science for you high school requirements? Thank you so much!
  22. Ellyndria and Merry, Thank you so much for your helpful replies. I am still thinking about how I will adapt what I have to incorporate the flashcards and maybe even having them spell with tiles. I really feel like my daughter especially will benefit from using several different modalities. Do you mind if I come back later and ask some more questions? Thanks you!
  23. I know this is a dumb question but....when it comes to spelling, doesn't it make more sense for them to know all the different ways a sound can be spelled. For instance, if I give the word "fright" isn't it more helpful for them to be thinking of the different ways to spell that "i" sound? "i_e", "igh","y" etc? My head is spinning.:tongue_smilie: Just trying to figure out the best way to present these things to my twins. I've heard of one program that does it that way but it does seem like most of the ones I've looked at do it the way you have mentioned AAS does it. Thanks again,
