  1. Same here!! We're now supposed to get 5-10 inches according to the weather map on my phone. I must have a good 3" on my back deck so far. :D !!! *S*N*O*W D*A*Y* !!! :D
  2. We're in the 3-7" range in Fredericksburg --- but they can NEVER predict our weather accurately! When they say we're getting snow, we never do...and when we're supposed to get a "dusting", we get half a foot. Go figure.
  3. I've never seen this before and it looks great! Thanks for posting!
  4. Glad to hear this! We plan on using this next year for 9th grade.
  5. Yes...it's fairly easy to secularize Sonlight. We skip the Bible portion -- and there's usually several stories in each Core that are missionary or Christian-based and we just substitute other books The only core that would be hard to secularize would be Core 200 -- which is Church History -- so I've always just skipped that core and my kids went straight from Core 100 (US History) to Core 300 (20th Century World History) I've also put together my own Core 99% of the time -- it's fairly easy to find used IGs at used curriculum sales (anywhere from free to $25 or so)...and then I just find the books (online, at curriculum sales, library, etc.) They sell a full core for close to $300 or $400 -- I've pulled mine together, used, for half of that. That's why, despite the fact that we've used Sonlight for the last 11 years, I don't have access to the Sonlight forums! LOL It only counts if you've bought the program through them. Alas. I have not. :D
  6. I know you'll need a gallon of distilled water. We haven't encountered anything "big" missing from our kits (either from year 1 or year 2) .. at least not yet!
  7. Or if we could find out if she belongs to a homeschool group in her area? We belong to a small homeschool group, but we have a member who coordinates meals for people who have lost a family member, have an ill person in the family, a new baby's arrival, etc. and she collects meals from other members and delivers them for as long as they're needed. Perhaps her homeschool group has such a service?
  8. Thank you for posting this! I usually go to the big HEAV convention in Richmond...but this year the guest speakers are the Duggars. Not my cup of tea Will have to try the smaller convention.
  9. Yes...we did Year 1 last year and are using Year 2 this year. My son loves it. The textbook is very colorful and the author is entertaining to read. We do two lessons per week from the text on Tuesdays & Thursdays and my husband does the lab assignment for that week on Saturdays. I think it's a great program for middle schoolers -- definitely not meaty enough for high school though. So I'd say 6th-8th grade works well -- somewhere in that timeframe.
  10. My 13yo is getting braces in 3 weeks. $4900 is the price we received (we live in Virginia) ... and he'll wear them for about 2 years. We pay a $500 downpayment the day they put the braces on and $183 per month for the next 2 years (interest-free) So see if there's some sort of payment plan offered by the orthodontist....and find out if there's anything additional that needs to be done (teeth that need to pulled, for instance, will increase the bill. My son didn't need any teeth pulled so we're just paying for the braces themselves). He'll then wear a retainer for another 12-18 months after the braces come off.
  11. I've ordered probably half of our curriculum -- waiting to order Visual Link Spanish, Shepherd Biology & Chalkdust Geometry until after we go to Disney in May -- money can only stretch so far until then. :D
  12. Do you have a box of Zataran's handy? I try to always keep a family size box of dirty rice in the cabinet and it's great with ground beef added.
  13. Smarr's Introduction to Literature for 9th Smarr's Survey of World Literature for 10th Smarr's Survey of American Literature for 11th Smarr's Survey of British Literature for 12th
  14. We're using Smarr's Literature guides -- starting with Intro, then World, American, and British -- you can find them at Rainbow Resource for $65 (CD version). I was able to find all of the books for free via Kindle download. So that's what we'll be using for high school English.
  15. Here's where we stay: http://storytimeorlandorental.com/ 80 days to our next Disney vacation!! :D
  16. We're moving from Algebra I to Geometry next year -- then Algebra II after Geometry

  18. We're going to St. Augustine in May on our way to Disney! My hubby graduated from Flagler College so I definitely recommend a tour! Castillo de San Marcos is REALLY neat .. my kids loved it and the admission fee was relatively inexpensive (I think around $6 for adults and $3 for children). We're staying at the St. Augustine Beachfront Resort -- indoor pool, right on the beach -- and rates for our May stay are $100 per night. Not bad at all, I think. It's right next to Anastasia Island Park. Be sure to take a walk down St. George's Street! It's the oldest street in the nation and full of cute shops and restaurants. I believe there's also an old schoolhouse there that you can take a tour of. This year we're visiting the Alligator Farm, which we haven't done before....so can't comment on that yet. Enjoy!
