  1. Have you thought about using a digital recorder for spelling words and dictation? That could save you some time. I haven't tried it yet, but my child is very slow to write out words for dictation. I've started doing AAS while I'm cleaning the kitchen and washing dishes. I leave the TM open to see the list of words and just step over to it as needed.

I am resurrecting this post, because I STILL don't know what to do! I would love to hear more about this idea!

  2. FWIW, we've tried every math program but MUS and Singapore math. We always go back to CLE math. It does introduce different ways of breaking down equations and really makes him think of math and numbers. It works, so we'll stick with it the whole ride through.

Thank you! I do really like it and love the simplicity of it. I love that it's all in one workbook.

  3. I don't know much/anything about either program, but it sounds to me like your dd skipped from a 3rd grade math program to a 5th grade one. In the Saxon numbering system, 5/4 is for an average 5th grader/advanced 4th grader. If your dd was basically halfway through CLE 3rd grade, I'd imagined she missed some things. Did you do any placement testing?

I did do a placement test, but the Saxon placement test is a little confusing, IMO. On the K-3 placement test, she got them all right so it said to start at Level 3. The upper level (5/4 and up) is a separate placement test. She couldn't really do any of them, so it told us to start at level 5/4. I guess I did the right thing. I called Art Reed, and he told me to place her in the 5/4 level. I didn't realize that 5/4 was a 5th grade/advanced 4th grade program. That does make me feel better and explains why she isn't doing so well.

Would you guys start where you left off with LU 306 or do a placement test for CLE?

  4. You guys are awesome to chime in with your advice! Thank you so much! If I took a placement test for CLE and didn't test into the 400 level (which I doubt we would), would it let me know what LU in the 300 level to start with? I guess I should just start where we left off. Even if I started there, it's been 5 months since we've done CLE math. She may have forgotten some things.

I would go back to CLE. Why wouldn't you?

I guess because I would be switching again. She asked me a few weeks ago if we could switch back, and I said no. At the time, there was not a thought of switching back......but now I'm considering it.

I'd go back to CLE also. One way to speed things up a bit, but not miss anything new is to do two lessons but on the first lesson, only do the new teaching not the "we remember" part. Then on the second lesson, do the entire lesson including the "we remember". I wouldn't do that all the time but it can speed you through a bit if you think she knows it already or can handle it.

Good luck. CLE is a much bigger hit here at our house than Saxon.

That is a great idea if we switch back. Thank you!

my daughter is in 4th grade & we use CLE too. we switched in 2nd grade from R&S and we had to begin that entire year over (As CLE was covering stuff we had not even touched upon). she still hasn't caught up because of it and is only in 306 now. i did add in times tales, and we just finished that this week. now we use the flashcards to drill times tables and division facts daily. in that regard, we are slightly ahead of the LU she is in, but i know it will benefit her greatly in the end. i say go back to CLE and place her where you left off :)

I just ordered Times Tales yesterday! I should be getting it in the mail tomorrow. :001_smile:

I would try not to worry about what level she is in and just go back to where she needs to be. If she's missing that much on the Saxon 5/4 , she's not ready for it.

We like the format of CLE here better as well.

I know I shouldn't worry about what level we are in, but I still do. :001_smile: Maybe being in LU 306 is the same as a 4th grader in school? Isn't CLE supposed to be advanced?

  5. We have pretty much always used CLE for Math. My plan has always been to switch over to Saxon for the upper levels. I like the idea of the Dive cds. It takes a little bit off of me. My dd went from CLE 306 into Saxon 5/4.

So far, Saxon 5/4 seems a little easier than CLE 306, but she seems to be missing quite a few. She complains that math is taking too long and is asking to go back to our "old math" (CLE).

What would you do? She is a 4th grader, but I feel like if we went back to CLE we would have to go back to 306. Do you think she is missing problems b/c the explanations are not as clear? I do miss how the light units were so open and go and all in one place.

Not sure what to do. If I'm going to switch back, I want to go ahead and do it now. Any suggestions?

  6. I just received Pathway readers (Building Our Lives) for 4th grade. I just have a few questions. Would this replace Sonlight readers? Would there be any reason to do both? What do the Pathway readers cover? It looks like it covers vocabulary and comprehension. Am I right? My dd9 actually prefers the readers from Sonlight better, it just seems like the Pathway readers may cover more. Maybe I am wrong.

  7. I used to really hate putting an X next to a wrong answer (I really only correct math in that way). But I realized that it was my own issue -- I was emotionally attached to my son's work. And it's no surprise that he would get really upset to see that something was wrong. So I've worked on my attitude about it. It's important to me that he can make a mistake and see that the sky doesn't fall. We make mistakes, we correct them. And on we go... I don't know if any of this is relevant to your situation, but it's been interesting for me to explore.

    This is totally me!

  8. I am specifically thinking for math and grammar (we use Saxon 5/4 and Rod and Staff for grammar)? I have the hardest time putting x's on her work! Crazy I know!

Do you put an x if it's wrong and have him/her correct it on their own? Do you go over it with them?

It's a silly question, but I was just wondering what your system was for correcting work?

    Thanks!

  9. My DS9 is very freaked out by timed math tests. I have started using my timer's "count up" function(it measures elapsed time vs. count down where the alarm goes off after a set time). That way, he always finishes all the problems and is (very slightly) less panicked. To try to improve, we encourage him to beat his previous best time.

This is what I have done too. Maybe I need to stick to that! Thank you!

  10. If you haven't covered division yet, you might consider going over the few lessons toward the end of Saxon 3 that cover it. It first uses play money to cover it in a concrete way, then moves on to just working with the numbers. The way it's covered in 5/4 (in the edition we have anyway) was so plug-and-chug—do this, then this, then this, and that's the answer—with no foundation as to why, that at that lesson in 5/4 we went back and reviewed those lessons in Saxon 3.

Thanks, Erica! I will look over Saxon 3 at the division lessons.
