  1. You know, it really depends on the child we've found. We have used both, actually just finished MUS from Primer thru Pre-A with ds11. He did fine with it and seemed to thrive on its mastery approach. However for our daughters it was just he opposite. They do much better with CLE and it spiral approach. They were forgetting too much with MUS. I think they needed more variety and coming back to concepts over time which CLE does very well. CLE also introduces more advanced concepts earlier on and gradually brings them in. In that sense we like it better, for them.

One problem with MUS is that its scope and sequence is so different from other programs that its hard to synch up when switching. We went back a bit after switching to CLE just to catch areas not yet covered in MUS. For ds11 Pre-A was a good place to jump off to another curriculum, in this case TabletClass Pre-A. He is doing fine in the class and MUS was all he had ever used, along with supplimentals.

BTW, we are using CLE 100 for our 1st grader and its going really well. We did however start her last year in MUS Primer before switching to CLE. That might be a good supplimental to CLE 100. You could slow down CLE 100 and combine with MUS Primer.

Thank you so much! You are right about everything. I'm really not feeling good about dropping CLE to make a complete switch to MUS. I guess I could just keep the manipulatives and try to use them more with CLE?

  2. I would at least get the student workbook and the blocks to go with MUS so that she could do some practice problems for what she learned in the MUS video lesson. Do you know what she is having a problem with specifically. If it is that there are too many different things going on in the CLE lesson at one time MUS might be alot better for her since you are only working on 1 new topic at a time although you do continue to review what you have already learned. Unless she is just a really visual learner I don't think she would get a lot out of the videos without the blocks and then a few practice problems from the workbook. You might even decide to use MUS as your main program for her this year with CLE as the supplement then switch her latter.

The other suggestion I would have is slow her down in the CLE and really make sure she understands each concept well- don't rush her through any math program just to get it done in a certain time frame. Mine are using CLE right now with RS, we used MUS last year along with RS. I"m surprised how much work CLE is and how long it takes. Almost everything they are doing in CLE is review for them at the moment. IF they were learning new concepts in CLE they would be having math breakdowns without a doubt. CLE covers alot of different concepts in each lesson compared to RS and MUS.

My dd6 is having trouble understanding that, for example, 43 is larger than 21. For her facts, she is counting on her hands.

I actually called MUS today and spoke with someone for a while. I was really impressed. I ordered Gamma, Beta, and Alpha to take a look at. All of it. The teacher kit, student kit, and blocks. I might try it out, but keep going with CLE until I make a decision.

Did you switch from MUS to CLE?

  3. I use CLE with dd10, ds7, and dd6. I was considering supplementing with MUS for dd6 and possibly ds7. Have any of you done this? Could we just watch the videos since our main program is CLE? My dd6 just turned 6 in August and is in CLE 102. She just seems to be struggling a little bit more than my dd10 and ds7 did at this point (but is also a very young 1st grader). What would you do? Would you supplement with MUS or maybe MM?

  4. We use CLE for math for dd10, ds7, and dd6. I have been using xtramath.org to drill math facts rather than the flashcards and timed drills. Do you think that's ok? It's so much easier because I have 3 students I'm teaching and a 2-year-old getting into everything!:001_smile:

  5. For an average 5th grader I would use the 5 book. If his global language arts level is at a 6 level I'd go with the 6 book.

I have four students in this series; all but one use R&S spelling at grade level. The one that uses it ahead of grade level is working ahead of grade level in every subject. :001_smile:

I know, the word lists do seem on the easier side, but it's not about the word lists in these books. My middle school kids would be quick to tell you they still learned from the exercises even when they could correctly spell most of the words on the list when they started the lesson.

    Thank you!

Do your kids do it completely independently or are their things you go over with them?

  6. Thanks!!

Rod and Staff's Spelling by Sound and Structure. :) They are phonics based, actually teach spelling, and they're not about memorizing an arbitrary list of words; the learning is in the exercises. The workbook can be completed independently for the most part, and the TE makes your side of it a piece of cake.

    Would you purchase R&S Spelling 5 or 6 for a 5th grader?

  7. I would stay with OPGTR because by the end of it, the child is reading on a 4th grade level. It worked great for us and by the middle of first grade, my dd was reading 4th to 5th grade books easily and now is surpassing even those. I love OPGTR because it is a complete phonics program.

I have decided I am going to stick with it. Thanks for the encouragement! I think sometimes I just get nervous because I've branched out and am trying something different than what I did with my first. Did you go back and do a lot of reviewing with OPGTR?

  8. I use the big picture cards because 1. we have them and 2. I think it is going to be easier for my dd. I think the clue cards would accomplish the same; essentially just flash cards. OPGTR does not go in the same order as Abeka. My dd is learning ank, ink, onk, unk in OPGTR and that wasn't until the green set of cards. I just pulled those out. I am going to go through the cards daily with her (or a couple times a week) starting with the basic Abeka blends and increase the amount we go over as she learns them. Whenever we hit something in OPGTR that we haven't learnes in the cards, I will just pull the new sound out and add to the cards we are learning. Hope that makes sense.

    Thank you!! That does help!

  9. I really struggled with this decision. I used abeka with dd but hated how I had to filter through it to get only phonics, since we were using other things for everything else. Also, ds is not ready for all the writing. Last week I sat down and lined up all of the phonogram cards with the coordinating lesson in OPGTR. I still have to do the handbook for reading pages, but should get to that this week. It took forever, but I will put it all up on a chart and post it to my blog when I am done. :)

That is what drove me crazy about Abeka, because we only used it for phonics. I would absolutely love to check that out on your blog! Thank you!! Was it the clue word cards that you lined up?

  10. I used Abeka with ds and am using OPGTR with my dd for the same reasons - so much simpler! I think it is fine. I still have all my Abeka flashcards and I pull them out, we just are basically learning them in a different order. My dd would never be ready for all the written work that Abeka had.

Thank you!! I wouldn't do all the written work that I made my dd10 do with Abeka. It was too much! I guess I could continue on with OPGTR and also use just the flashcards and Handbook for Reading from Abeka. How do you use the flashcards with OPGTR? So that they go along with OPGTR or in the order Abeka suggests? Just curious. :001_smile:
