  1. Ahhh, we just spent a week on the NC/SC border and really enjoyed those gas prices. And food prices! Groceries were startlingly lower than in coastal GA!
  2. Caddie Woodlawn Five Little Peppers Pollyanna all of those books also have sequels
  3. I definitely just gave up and call myself eclectic. Unschoolers tell me that they do XYZ because they unschool, and assume I don't do XYZ because I don't call myself an unschooler. We might do XY but not Z. Then when I told someone else we pretty much did WTM-style, they said, "OH! School at home!" which it most certainly doesn't resemble IMHO. So....... whatever! :)
  4. We just go by age. Otherwise, I'd have to say DD9 is in 3rd/4th/6th/8th grade! :)
  5. I did find the "new content" area, but it doesn't allow me to preview the content of the post, just the topic.
  6. I was reading the forums in Google Reader, which let me skim new posts quickly and read the ones that interested me. It appears to no longer be possible to do it this way. Is that true? Is there an alternative method of viewing posts in a similar manner?
  7. I haven't tried it on our cat, but diapers work great on our GOAT!
  8. I'd keep them for a week if they were properly covered and refrigerated! :)
  9. Or go by freighter. Many of them take 10-12 passengers. I'd love to do it sometime!!!! :)
  10. This has been an often-revisited topic. :) *I* can't even do the dictations in WWE4! So I just parse it out as needed. DD9 is definitely better at it than I am, so we just do the best we can. I can definitely appreciate that the better they get at it, the easier the writing process will be for them so our aim is to get there, but in our own time.
  11. Loved reading your description! A lot like when we moved to Savannah 2-1/2 years ago from the Pacific NW, except the traffic here doesn't speed. :) I love living in the south; the only thing I wish I could pass on is the spring/summer/fall heat. :)
  12. Yay! I appreciate listening in on the advice. Same problem here. :glare: The water is awful on the shower tiles. Going to try the magic eraser and/or Dawn solutions.:001_smile:
  13. They must all be working on the south. :) We have Costco coming soon, and Whole Foods has purchased a location too. No sign of a Trader Joe's, though. :(
  14. DD6 is on 3, but really anywhere from 1 up is appropriate for 1st grade. Some start in K, some start in 1st...
  15. I love browning rice before cooking it. It tastes good, but I doubt it makes a significant difference nutritionally.
  16. Calling a restaurant that delivers is what I thought of first too. Also, you could send her some cleaning help!
  17. Thanks! I just learned that she is newly pregnant (most likely, not 100% sure!), so we have plenty of time to get ready. :) We set up a 200-square-foot area for her and we also have a nice 3' x 10' shelter that just needs a plastic roof to keep of the rain. Goat should be home in an hour or two. :)
  18. We've gotten to that point a few times :blushing: and the fleas that come really don't last long, as they get poisoned as soon as they bite the dog. We've never had to do anything special. We are using a different medication, though (Trifexis), so I don't know if that makes a difference. Frontline was totally ineffective on our dog! Trifexis has been great, and tends to keep working beyond the month it's supposed to last.
  19. Forget the GOLDFISH, my DD9, in cahoots with DH, is bringing home a pregnant Alpine pygmy goat from the fair. She's been on top of the world this week. We have a friend that runs a rescue place for wild animals and does animal shows/fairs all over the US. DD9 spent last week researching all about the different animals he has with him here (I've never seen her write so much!), and is spending two half-days as his assistant, telling people about the different animals in the "Safari Tent." Anyway... he offered DH a pregnant pygmy goat tonight! We have a side yard (gated and fenced) that is about 30' x 60'. The chickens have a 100-sq-ft run, and there are a bunch of veggie beds back there (all down now, and needing to be cleaned up.) We could easily fence in a 100-sq-ft area (maybe even 150 sq ft) for the goats. Is that enough space for 2-3 goats to kick up their heels? How high should the fence be? For now, can we just let them have the run of the yard and get them a doghouse or something for night shelter? How much space per goat for their night shelter?? Are there suburban predators we should be worried about? Should they be closed in at night? We have raccoons, opossums, birds of prey, etc., but nothing larger. Are young goats at risk?? Also, is there anything we should know about goat midwifery?? :) I know about wiping the nose and mouth clear of mucus. My DH has a fair amount of basic medical knowledge. Is there anything we should do to be ready??? I'm not sure how far along she is, but I'll find out tomorrow! :bigear: :bigear: :bigear:
  20. It does become less mortifying the more often it happens. Doo-dee-doo. :001_huh:
  21. :iagree: I thought this one was really beautifully done. By far my favorite.
  22. We're also so very happy with Math Mammoth. Even the math-is-NOT-my-favorite-subject don't mind Math Mammoth at all!
  23. Yes, your body definitely gets used to it. We have beans 1-3x/week, and not a peep from us! :) I don't soak or use any other preventative measures.
