  1. No one else wants to touch this one?? LOL Saddlemomma, I really appreciate your replies. It will take me a while to go through everything. I think this is a little advanced for DS yet, but certainly something I want to check out for myself.
  2. Saddlemomma, thank you for your thorough reply and suggestions! I have heard of Dr. Heiser before and I have looked a little bit into his work, but I started to get overwhelmed and put it aside, lol. I need to get back into it. At the risk of being too simplistic, what I gathered from one of the videos that I watched was that he was arguing against a literal 6 day creation due to the grammar/syntax of the ancient Hebrew text. Would you agree with that? (It's been months since I watched his lecture, so I could be way off! lol) I think I'm going to look into the book Supernatural for ME, then see where I can take it with DS. :) Also, can you suggest or link me to a list of other authors that he recommends? I like gathering multiple sources so that I'm not too dependent on one person's views. Thank you so much.
  3. We were watching CNN student news for a while, but the topics were a little too mature for my younger kids. There are a couple of quiz questions during the segment.
  4. For a progressive Christian family who believes in an old earth and evolution? Is there anything that would work? I want my 12 year old to dig a little deeper in his Bible studies but I don't want a curriculum that is going to try to convince him evolution is wrong. Thanks.
  5. 7th grade is kind of freaking me out! We're still getting our feet under us as far as homeschooling goes and high school seems so close! Here's what I have so far. Math - he takes a class locally offered through our university for accelerated middle school kids. They will be doing geometry and some pre-calc. Reading - book list to be determined, I am thinking of working through a couple of MP lit guides Grammar/other language arts - MCT, Vocabulary from Classical Roots, Figuratively Speaking Writing - BW co-op, plus I still have IEW that I never used this year, so I think we will work slowly through that. Science - RSO Biology HIstory - History Odyssey middle ages Geography - Mapping the world with art Spanish - continue Duolingo and GSWS, add something to beef it up, and begin either Latin or French logic - ?? music - piano, cello art - possibly Artistic Pursuits PE - ??
  6. We use the textbook and workbook only. Lately, DD has been grabbing for the workbook before I teach the lesson, so I've been letting her go for it if I think it's something she already knows or can figure out easily. We are about to finish the 1st grade curriculum this week. We also use Miquon to present things in a different way (she prefers this one to Singapore). I have not considered any of the additional Singapore books for her at this age. It would be overkill for my DD.
  7. We will be using MCT materials for the first time next year. We are going with Voyage level for my upcoming 7th grader and Town level for my upcoming 4th grader. I also purchased a used copy of Sentence Island for super cheap on Amazon to go through this spring/summer during morning time/read aloud for everyone, just as a gentle introduction.
  8. If it were me, I'd stick with the math and science you already do, add some great read-alouds and get her plenty of time outside and doing crafts, pursuing hobbies, etc. Good luck!
  9. I am putting my youngest in preschool next year. I'm just not giving her enough attention during the day (and she lets me know by getting into all kinds of messes). I know she'll have fun and get to do things i don't have time for here, and I'll get to focus on teaching without her interruptions for a couple of days a week. I think it's fine if that's what works for your family. :)

  11. Well, we're only in our first year, so take this with a grain of salt, but I have been working on my plans for the past month or so and started buying things, looking for sales when I can. (Actually, I picked my science and history a while ago and bought them in January because they were on sale, but that was it until recently). There is a curriculum sale here next week so I am waiting to go to that before I buy anything else. I've also been scouring used books on amazon to see if I can find any deals. I do want to have most, if not all, next year's curriculum in hand by the time we finish this school year.
  12. I just keep coming back to CP. Yes, I could piece LA together with other resources and save a few bucks but I really love the feel of this program. I also love the short lessons (DD picks things up quickly but does not have much stamina for work and will melt down if things get too hard or boring. lol) I've been reading tons of reviews and I think this is the gentle but thorough all inclusive program that will work for her. Thank you so much for your advice!
  13. Yay, I'm so excited to hear! We are just planning to use a couple of the second grade books for a fun supplement next year but she will be thrilled to be doing BA like her older brother.
  14. Thank you. She really does not need a rigorous spelling program right now. Basically, I take a word from her copywork, discuss rules, and have her write a few similar words. She is reading and spelling well for her age. That being said.... Sigh, the Cottage Press Primers look SO lovely. But I'm having a hard time justifying the expense. I could continue the spelling we're doing, (and I think add in word study from Words Their Way, which I have from my teaching days), add in FLL for $10, and use resources I already have for nature study. But.... the Primers look so lovely!! lol
  15. Okbud, hope you don't mind me jumping in with a question - what did you think of the spelling in Cottage Press? Did you supplement with something else? TIA!
  16. Finally making plans, here's what I have so far Math - Beast Academy, we just started 4A this spring, will keep going, add SIngapore CWP Reading/grammar/spelling - MCT Town level, classic books, might add Vocabulary from Classical Roots if he's interested Writing - Brave Writer co-op Science - Mystery Science History - middle ages History Odyssey with 2nd grade sister Bible - Grapevine, not sure which unit we'll do next logic - ? Spanish - continue Duolingo, need to find something to take it further Music - I think he is giving up piano after 2 years :( But he is starting French horn lessons this summer, so I hope that clicks with him a little more Art - probably projects from Pinterest PE - TKD and baseball
  17. I'm finally getting around to planning for next year. Here is what I have so far for my upcoming 2nd grader! Math - Singapore 2, Miquon, maybe Beast Academy 2 as a fun supplement from time to time Reading/Spelling/Grammar - leaning towards Cottage Press Primers, otherwise FLL, classic books, no idea for spelling (we didn't really do spelling this year) Writing - we might do a few Brave Writer projects Science - Mystery Science History - middle ages History Odyssey with 4th grade brother logic - Logic Safari, Logic Countidown Spanish - start Duolingo, maybe add Song School Spanish Bible - we're enjoying our first Grapevine unit, I think we'll do more of that next year. We do this as a group. music - start piano lessons art - ?? (We've been just doing projects off Pinterest, will probably keep doing that, lol) PE - dance class, maybe start TKD
  18. Thanks, this is helpful! My upcoming 4th grader is advanced with reading/vocab/spelling, etc, so I think Town will work for him. We'll just go at a slow pace if needed. He wants to start doing spelling bees, so we both thought learning more vocab from latin roots would be good for him. I was worried that Voyage would be "behind" for my upcoming 7th grader, but again, we can just go at his pace, skip ahead if needed and move on to the next when he's ready. He's also an advanced reader/speller/vocab, etc.
  19. Good to know about the materials!
  20. What do you think the general grade level equivalents are for these? I know on the website, it says the first level is 3rd grade and it goes up from there. But I was looking at a friend's samples today, and they are definitely challenging. I'm looking for my boys, who will be 7th and 4th grade next year. They are both advanced readers with good vocabulary. But even so, I'm thinking level 2 may work for my younger DS and then level 3 might even work for my older one. Ideas? Anyone want to share their experiences?
  21. I think because it was free, it was easy for me to put it on the back burner and sort of forget that it was there. I'm kicking myself now! lol I'm going to give it a good try the rest of the year to make sure it's what we want, but I think it will work well for us. It sounds like a lot of people on the boards here like it too!
