  1. This one is not a poster but, for someone else who might be looking, it's a nice summary: http://www.mekabay.com/overviews/logical_fallacies.pdf
  2. I would leave a mature child home alone at 10. To supervise one other child, (not a toddler) 12. To supervise multiple younger children, or a toddler/infant 14. Past midnight 16.
  3. We just treat them like school books and do all the written work in a hilroy notebook. Lots of extra copying down, but that's the way school kids do it!
  4. Yes! Once you use this method, you won't look back. There's a book called Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics by Liping Ma. It's awesome at helping North American educated math teachers understand the Asian way of teaching Math. Even the way we name the numbers is different in NA. In Asian languages 23 is "two tens, three" not twenty three. and 15 is ten, five and 535 is 5 hundreds, 3 tens, 5 Making tens when grouping is an essential part of understanding the base ten system. Both of my boys can do math calculations in their heads way better than I can, and I attribute it to having started learning their math this way. (Rather than trying to adapt to it, in their 40's!) I highly recommend seeking out the book! Lisa
  5. Looking for one? I've just uploaded one here. cheers! Lisa
  6. Thanks for the replies, Ladies! I've ordered the Ancients Book, and will get through that one first. The listing says it's 868 pages! Looking forward to some good night time reading!
  7. I've chosen the Writers Inc. book. Ordered! Now we wait.. Did I ever mention how much I love new books!!! But Amazon is always so fast, even with the free shipping option....
  8. I just thought I'd tell you about a wonderful free resource for handmade items and crochet. There is a YouTube channel called Hectanooga1 run by a lady named Emi. She has hundreds of videos on how to make things from things around the house. She even has free crochet patterns, jewelry making, sewing projects you name it! I love to watch her make things! Lisa
  9. I was just blogging about this the other day, we like to start early, 8;30 and finish early 2pm...with silent reading for an hour 2-3. Subjects per day varies with our outings schedule. We're trying something different this year, and working rigorously in 4 week blocks with a week off, unless there's work left unfinished. Lisa
  10. My 8th grader is doing MUS, Excellence in Literature for writing.- English 1 (it's a self study course, but out by one of Andrew Pudewa's colleagues from IEW, and much less expensive.) For Science we're doing Physics using the Great Courses. History, Story of the world 4 with online primary sources from StoryOfTheWorld My 8th grader enjoys independent work and this will have me mentor/tutoring him instead of teaching. Lisa
  11. Do you mean this book The Way Things Work I'm curious too! I'll be doing physics this year with my Gr4 son and was planning on using Janice VanCleave's Engineering for Everykid We used it with my older son, and he loved it! Lisa
  12. I found the book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics by Liping Ma to be indespensible in my understanding of teaching math. She references the Singapore series in her explainations of teaching math, but you can apply the concepts across the board.
  13. I'm buying a writers guide for my 8th grader to use with Excellence in Literature, English I. Does anyone have a suggestion between these 2: (they are both recommended by the curriculum) Writers Inc. and Write for College This is our first foray into serious writing. Lisa
  14. Thanks for your replies on this! I think I'll get them both History of the Medieval World History of the Ancient World I wonder how long before she's got the series completed.... wrings hands with anticipation! Lisa
  15. I'm looking at getting these books: History of the Medieval World History of the Ancient World Has anyone used them? For themselves? For their teens? Thanks, Lisa
  16. Have you seen this wonderful book about working with children and maps? Mapmaking with Children: Sense of Place Education for the Elementary Years What better way to learn about Geography than through mapmaking? Lisa
  17. There are lots of them here: Papo Fairy and they're adorable! Lisa
  18. Sounds like an awesome undertaking! I would lose steam after about 100 books I think...but it's a great idea! Hopefully you'll find an app that takes pictures of the books and puts them in the library automatically!
  19. Don't get an 8 foot - too small! Make sure it has a screen/net around it for safety. 12 foot trampolines seem to be popular in our area.
  20. Have you read Diana Gabaldon's series which begins with Outlander (in Scotland) and ends with An Echo in the Bone (in USA) Page turners for sure! Hope that helps, Lisa
  21. I use the Lexile Framework, They have many books indexed: Lexile just put the book title in the search bar at the top hope that helps! Lisa
  22. I refuse to listen to whining. I managed to get my own children to do it when they were 4 or 5, but I teach piano lessons and have managed to wean it out of a couple of insistent whiners who aren't my own children. That's how I do, it. I just refuse to listen to it. You can read a blog post I wrote about it a few months ago: Whining When it comes to complaining about the amount of work that's been assigned, or having to do that work. That's a different issue. My kids know that if they complain they'll not be pleased with the result. Childen with poor attitudes are asked to go sit on their bed until they can come to the school room with a good attitude, and children who complain about how much math, etc. they have been assigned are given a few extra questions tacked on the assignment. I do it all very nicely. But my rules are my Rules. And since I'm in charge of privileges in the household, they are generally upheld!
  23. We loved this series. I used it for grades 4-7. Once my eldest reached grade 8, he didn't need any more grammar studies. We'll just learn the bits we need as we go. I've got a blog posts about our GwG experiences here: http://knowtheyloveyou.blogspot.ca/search/label/Grammar Cheers! Lisa
