Kolbe vs MODG for middle school?
newhsmommy replied to newhsmommy's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Thank you!!! What great opinions and suggestions. -
I am trying to decide between both for 6th grade next year. I like the true classical flow of,MODG however I do not want to dedicate a whole year to ancient Egypt. I would need to find something else to supplement. Maybe need to add IEW? Not seeing a writing? Kolbe does have their version of IEW. It does not seem very classical, more like the flow of a Catholic school? Kolbe high school program does appear, very solid. I dont want to be changing programs every year. Hmm... I welcome all thoughts!! Tracy

Modg- Mother Of Divine Grace 6th grade
newhsmommy replied to newhsmommy's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Thank you very much, both made great points! Jean, you were reading my mind exactly! Was it easy to make your own FF schedule? Sounds like the syllabus is ok for for a general guide but not to directly follow? My daughter is very multi sensory, I was wondering if the choices would be too dry? Thank you!!! -
I am in the same position!!! We are leaning towards MODG because of the proven test scores...but having a very multi sensory child know i may need to make some of it interesting . Look on Emmanuel books and the give you options within the MODG syllabus. Ex Iew ancients writing vs Old World America or Teaching Textbooks vs Saxon.

Has anyone used this spelling program? Logically, it makes the most sense to me but wanted to hear your opinions before starting another program. Thanks!!! :grouphug:

Thank you, Thank you for all the wonderful insight on both readers! I went and saw both yesterday and was feel in the Nook would be a good fit for her...then my husband met up and is so PRO Nook Color. He likes that there are automatic updates loaded as soon as they are available, and feels like it will grow with her... I'm not too sure

Reading has finally "clicked" for my 9 year old. She is asking for a Nook for her birthday. At first I was thinking no way, but my DH pointed out it would only encourage reading where ever she may go...good point. Which one do you prefer? I would looking to buy the most inexpensive models. Thanks

We live off 380 and was wondering if there are any WTM or Thomas Jefferson inspired groups? Maybe we could start one? Moved here 3 months ago :grouphug:

Curriculum that's hands on but not overwhelming??
newhsmommy replied to sbgrace's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Moving Beyond the Page...includes everything but your math. Most of the activities your children can figure out. Very low planning on the moms part. It was a life saver for us. We too have had many changes, my kids were able to continue on with school and I had the time to handle our "big people" stuff. Check them out -
I had a long talk with myself and decided....to put my "big girl" pants on and do what has always been the right thing HOMESCHOOL! Now what to plan??? Thanks for all the suggestions...still taking advice :grouphug:

Critterfixer-thanks! I agree, I can say right off the cuff good reasons why we HS, and digging deeper tells me to keep going. I think I need to get my dd out more in the activities "school" offers like art, music etc..

Is there something like Story of the Orchestra, but with art?
newhsmommy replied to ktgrok's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We loved using Homeschool in the Woods: Artists the kids were asking if they had another one for next year! -
Thanks for the ideas/suggestions. I need to get a grip and try to find some balance :)

I'm wondering if I am burned out or is it time to consider school for my 9 year old next fall? We moved to another state in Nov. and it has been slow to connect with people here. After Christmas break we decided to put my 7th grade son into school and he loves it (he was not a fan of HS to begin with)and now my daughter is making comments about going to school. I think the overall issue is that we never really got into the swing of getting into our HS year. First it was getting ready to make the move, moving and now trying to adjust to another life. Many days I seem to be throwing work together for her to do. Since moving, I even bought a bunch of the Spectrum workbooks to make sure she is "on level" if we give her the IOWA and enroll her in school next year. I see pros/cons with either decision. Should I bag the workbooks, get my act together and put together our unit studies again? Stick to the workbooks and work towards public school? I guess the 3rd choice would be a 3 day a week enrichment type of school and then 2 days home (not sure what they are called?) My husband said it is not fair for him to make the decision since I am the primary one HS and taking care of the household when he is away traveling for work. Thanks for any ideas!! :grouphug:

How do you find curricula used by private schools?
newhsmommy replied to redsquirrel's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
to take this a step further, does anyone look into schools out of the US? I have been curious about course study from the countries topping the US in academics ex, Asia, Europe. Any ideas?
