  1. My son used Headsprout, and when he was done with the program we just started using some of the Abeka and Christian Liberty readers. I know in general readers get a bad rap, but I've really enjoyed the quality of most of the books by these two publishers. They are nothing like the boring readers my kids had at one of their Christian schools. Plus, I find it helpful to know the reading level of the books and to have a nice progression. We also started the Christian Liberty phonics workbooks at the same time.
  2. Wow, what a fascinating thread! And while this topic can sometimes become heated, I think everyone here has handled it with grace. For those who are earnestly trying to understand Calvinism, I highly recommend The Five Points of Calvinism by Edwin H. Palmer. The ladies Bible study at my church studied this book last year, and we all found it very helpful, even those who had grown up in the Reformed faith. It is not a long book, but very thorough in backing everything up with Scripture. I even have an extra copy I'd be happy to give away. I'm still trying to figure out this message board, so it would probably be better for you to visit my blog and click on the "Email Me" button if you're interested in the copy. :)
  3. My 6 yr. old who is still learning to read is having no problems with SSL. I'm currently using SSL with my younger two and they both just love it (my oldest, who is in LFC B, is sad it wasn't available before she started Latin). There are worksheets and it would be helpful if the child were a reader, but I just skip those for my 6 yr. old. The songs are what really make the program incredible. But I also don't think it would hurt to wait until 3rd grade, especially if you're going straight into LFC. There is quite a jump in difficulty from SSL to LFC, and I felt like my oldest was better prepared for LFC A when she was in 4th grade. Just my 2 cents. :)
  4. Spelling Power and Handwriting Without Tears are some other good ones.
