  1. the other is always reading. What I found is that she likes a different kind of book. She loves books about animals and she likes mystery type books. I got a bunch of books I thought she would like from the library and have them in a basket by the couch. Each day we have a set time where everyone sits down to read, even mom. I also read aloud to them each night, we are reading the Narnia series now. Talk to your daughter about her interests and try to find some quality books on those topics. Get all the other books you don't want her reading out of the way and have these readily available. Start with 15 minutes or so and build from there.
  2. I don't know how similar it is to the Frog and Toad, but my girls love reading her books.
  3. We have Making Children Mind without losing Yours, Bringing Kids up without tearing them down and What a Difference a Daddy Makes I also have Creative Correction and have gotten some wonderful ideas. There is also some good stuff at Doorpost publishing. One is titled For Instruction in Righteousness. HTH
  4. and really enjoy it. I use it along with the coloring sheets from the Calvary Chapel website. Egermeier's Bible Story Book Calvary Chapel HTH
  5. We would like to test the girls at the end of 3rd grade, next school year. What are my options for testing, where do you get them and are there any test prep books good for preparing them for the test taking procedure? Thanks
  6. We are using Prima Latina and I like having her to pronounce the words for us. Does Lively Latin have this? Thanks
  7. I couldn't decide who to cheer for! We weren't really Memphis fans (went to U of MS) but it was a reminder of home. But on the KS side, I just registered ds and dh for the Parent/Child basketball camp at KS this summer and how cool to go to camp with the National Champs! DS is very excited, I can't wait to tell him in the morning that they won (I sent him to bed hours ago!)
  8. I'm an only child and my mom didn't let me do many of the things my other female cousins were doing. I will just say that now that we're all in our 30's, you can definitely tell the difference between the parenting styles. Three of those cousins graduated hs from a special program for drug addicts, had babies with various fathers, and have no direction in their lives, yet my mom still gets grief from her siblings about being so hard on me and wasting her money on my college! Be Strong! BTW, what does your dh say?
  9. My girls are 2nd grade, we don't do spelling every week. I usually do spelling for about 6 weeks and then take a few weeks off. This has kept us from getting burned out on it. They are both making excellent progress in spelling and reading levels. Ds just turned 5, we are going over the single letter phonograms and he is learning to write them on his Doodle Pro, which he thinks is pretty cool. I also have letter "tiles" I ordered from another program that match the phonograms used in SWR. If you are interested in those, just ask on the board, someone will know what you are talking about - I can't remember where I got them. He participates with his sisters when they are saying the multi-letter phonograms, he repeats what he hears them say. In the next week or so, I will start him on list A. He will write the words on his Doodle Pro and/or use the letter tiles. I will write his spelling log for him to practice reading the words.
  10. Thanks - I'll check out the update chart! You guys know everything!!!
  11. We are thinking of using SL next year (Core 2). I am looking around for a used core, but my dh is concerned about not getting the "latest" version. All the books are the same as what is in my catalog. Would the IG's be that much different? The versions I've seen for sale were as old as 2003. Thanks
  12. I am of strong faith, and we see doctors. Our pastor said one time, "Pray like it's all up to God and work like it's all up to you."
  13. My DH was a band director for 11 years and an assistant principal for one year. He left education for a higher paying job, totally unrelated to education.
  14. I am considering the Chemistry program for our 3rd grade year and would appreciate any input you have on these. Thanks
  15. My girls will be 8 in May. One reads on a 3rd grade level and the other on a 4-5th grade level. Would these be appropriate for them? The web site I looked at said ages 9, but some of the descriptions said age 8. Is that based on comprehension or reading level? Thanks
  16. My twin girls will be 8 in May. Welcome to the boards!
  17. When we lived in TN I had a favorite seasoning mix I would use, but have been unable to find it here in KS. So I was thinking it was time to make it without the aid of a seasoning mix. Anyone have a good recipe for me? Thanks
  18. My dh found a note in dds room that said, "____ is my boyfrind". If you can't spell boyfriend, you definitely are not old enough to have one!!!!!!! I casually asked her about it when we were alone and at first she told me it wasn't hers, but quickly changed her answer and said it was, but that she was just joking. I had a brief talk with her about her not being old enough for boyfriends. She acted embarrassed and was quick to agree with me and change the subject. Is there a handbook to dealing with this kind of stuff????? Thanks
  19. My twin girls will be 8 in May. One of them has always gravitated toward the older boys in the group at church or wherever we happen to be. I have nephews (age 10 and 13) who have always taken up time with my girls and that could account for her being so comfortable playing with the older boys, but I am still concerned about this growing into an unhealthy behavior. At our new church there is a 6th grade boy with a little sister the same age as my girls. They play chase and tease each other constantly. Is this normal, or should I be concerned? Is there some dialog I could be using with the girls as far as appropriate behavior with boys? Thanks ladies,
  20. It is a resource book for finding books appropriate for periods in history and age level. The title had "Ages" in it. Thanks
  21. We still have some remnants of the weekends snow on the ground. Its 68 degrees here and supposed to snow again tomorrow! This has been the craziest weather I have ever seen! I told them to go enjoy it while they can.
