  1. She will lay in her bed awake for hours! I have tried letting her listen to books or music on CD and I've tried silence. I have tried night lights and I have tried darkness. She is a very high strung kid and I think she's having trouble winding down. We have dinner at 6, then clean up and family time. She's supposed to be in bed by 8 and lights out at 8:30. I've seen her still be awake at 11pm! Then of course she wants to sleep til 9am. This has been going on for about 4 months. Any suggestions on how to help her relax and get to sleep?
  2. My girls will be 9 in a few months, the boys aren't babies anymore and it's time I started learning more about how to navigate the pre-teen years. I would like some recommendations on reading materials, etc, to help DH and I learn how to handle the conversations over the next few years and instilling the concept of courting and chasity into our children. Thanks!
  3. I put a brand new Wii on craigslist (we got a better deal elsewhere and we're trying to keep from spending more money shipping it back to the company I purchased from online). I got a response this afternoon from someone in NH wanting me to ship the Wii to her son at a university in Africa and she said she would pay me via paypal. She was offering an extra $100 on the price to ship to him. I'm thinking this seems very odd. Is there "Scam" written on this anywhere?
  4. We finally broke down and are entering the world of video games. We got the twins DSs for Christmas, but now I need to pick out a couple of games to get them started. Any recommendations? One is artsy and the other loves games and animals. I was thinking of the "interior design", "cooking momma" and "Pet Vet". Thanks
  5. my girls are 8 1/2 and like to keep in touch with their friends from TN. They've been writing letters this last year, but are wanting to learn to type and I thought email might help them get in some extra practice, plus be a fun way for them to keep in touch with their friends and grandparents, cousins, etc. Any problem with yahoo for kids? Are there any steps I need to take to make sure they are safe with a yahoo account? Thanks
  6. the Pastor's outline is put on the screen in a Power Point type format. The girls copy it down as he goes through it along with the scripture references. They can also draw on the page if he stays on one particular point longer than it takes them to copy. I find that they are listening to him because they ask questions. My favorite week was when one of them leaned over and whispered, "I get it Mom, I know what he's saying" when the pastor was using a story to make a point. HTH
  7. We got an inexpensive bunk bed set at Big Lot a few years ago
  8. The requirements are fairly simple. We registered with Homelife Academy and turned in grades once each semester. I think there were testing requirements in certain grades, but my girls had just finished 1st grade when we moved to KS. Dawn
  9. I was a little surprised at that since she is such a popular doll. So if you are thinking Samantha, you'd better go ahead and get her now.
  10. One of my girls has Kit and the other has Josephina. Kit's hair still looks great and Josephina's was a mess. We took her to the salon in Dallas a month ago and told dd NOT to take it out of that braid!
  11. If an American family moves to Germany for the Dad's job (non-military) would they be allowed to homeschool?
  12. she is 8 and reads above her grade level, although I haven't tested her or anything. She devours chapter books in a day or two and is always telling me about what is going on in her latest book, so I know she is comprehending what she reads. When she reads out loud, I have her slow down and tell her to "read the words." I can control it when she does this when reading out loud, but she often misreads the directions on assignments and word problems in math. I'm hoping she will outgrow this and in the meantime just talk to her about it and make her slow down when reading out loud.
  13. when we went to Chicago last year we were able to visit the Field Museum, Museum and Science and Industry and Shedd Aquarium for free with our memberships from back home. We made up for the money saved while at the American Girl Doll store. Enjoy your trip!
  14. these ladies come to an arts and crafts festival I went to every year when we lived in TN. I have also ordered off of their website and they have great service. They make beautiful bows in every color imaginable and will also monogram them. They have bows with different fasteners and sized for different ages. My girls won't wear bows anymore and it made me very very sad. I gave them all to my nieces. CJ's Bows HTH
  15. and he is reading fairly well - I don't correct his pronunciation. He has had no trouble in spelling the words. When he pronounces a word, he thinks he's saying it just like I do. My best friend is a speech therapist but lives several states away or I would have her over here helping me! She told me that the "r" isn't a concern until age 8. I had trouble with it as a child and went to speech therapy in 2nd grade. My practice sentence was "the red rabbit ran down the road in the rain" Funny how I still remember that! I have noticed that when we are working on just phonograms in SWR, he does a better job at pronouncing the sounds than he does when reading or talking, so I was thinking that the more we practiced the phonograms individually it would train his tongue and eventually spill over to his speech and reading. Good Luck
  16. The Moody's We haven't read these, but remembered seeing them when I read your post. HTH
  17. We just started 3rd grade and will be using a writing curriculum for the first time. When do you let them start typing their papers? I was thinking of having them hand write the first draft and let them type the final draft. We are using Imitations in Writing - Aesop's Fables. Those who teach typing, what software do you think would be appropriate for 3rd graders? Thanks
  18. It would be 30 blank maps. The dot is the state capital.
  19. and I have lots of questions, too. Maybe we can all commit to checking the CC message board and helping each other out. In the meantime, what are you doing with your abecedarian and apprentice classes for geography? Are you going to try and have them write the capitals on the map or do you have labels? How are you sticking the labels to the map? Thanks
  20. I wanted to put everything on it and it kept growing and growing. I decided to stick with the SL list and stop looking at other book lists.
  21. I would also add 'Bears on Wheels" by the Berenstain's. I told him the words he didn't know. He likes to read the same book over and over and over and over and over. So he eventually knew those words without my help. Sometimes we mark the phonograms in the book with a pencil so he can see them.
  22. I used to write out what we were going to do, but I used up too many erasers! I use SL for history and that kind of stuff, so I just write down what week we are working on in SL and then write down which math, Latin and grammar lessons were completed, what additional books we read and any thing else I want to keep up with like field trips, music lessons or special classes. I can also make notes of other things I need to work on like our new address. I say "new address", but we've been here a year today. See why I need to write that down! I've also started jotting down grades from math and grammar because the girls thought it would be fun to keep track of their grades. It also makes DH feel better that I am keeping track of what we have done in case anyone ever come snooping. He's gotten kinda paranoid lately :001_smile:
  23. I found enlarged maps at my local school supply store (Superior School Supply) that I thought looked much better than the CC maps. Here's a link: student maps The tutor maps were from Trend Enterprises item number T1087. I couldn't get the link to that site to work. HTH Dawn
  24. His sisters are not going to be happy if he catches up to them in Gamma! Maybe it will keep them on their toes.
