  1. I have FVL and had a PE at 18 (smoking and on the pill). It was terribly painful and accompanied by shortness of breath. It also went undiagnosed -- ER only did regular x-rays -- and I was lucky to survive. I may have recently had a PE. I developed a DVT and was experiencing severe shortness of breath, no pain. However, I have other health stuff going on that may have been responsible, and the doctor didn't want to increase my radiation load to test since I was already going to be prescribed lovenox for the DVT. He told me that treatment protocol for a PE in the US is one week hospitalization while starting anticoagulants, but in many other countries there is no longer any hospitalization. Heck, with my first DVT (1988, smoking and on the pill and in the days before genetic testing; but stopped both this time) I was in hospital for a week.
  2. I'm sorry to hear your news. :grouphug: Be careful Googling. Much of what is out there about cancer is outdated and unduly frightening.
  3. Animals like rabbits are borderline. I know some people who raise them for food and others who view them as pets only and are horrified at the thought of eating them. I remember seeing on the (IIRC) Ecuador episode of Bizarre Foods guinea pigs raised for food. They're the perfect size to grill.
  4. That's part of the problem, manufacturers of the products asked about by the OP don't define "toxin." The research on added sugars in the diet is also not yet conclusive, but is IMHO so far compelling (and really, there's no good argument for adding sugar to one's diet?). But in your scenario, no pill or cream or other "detox" agent is being utilized. Also, there is no persistent build-up of sugar in the system, so the flushing out does not take long.
  5. sbbulliv, improving your diet (assuming you added the fresh fruits and veggies and other good foods to replace the energy and bulk lost from what you eliminated) *is* good for you, especially the added fiber. Bonus points if you keep active and fit. However, you have no evidence that any "toxins" were eliminated from your body; it's that nebulous claim we're talking about in this thread.
  6. My problem with memorizing a list of prepositions is that many of these words do not always function as prepositions. Far better to wait until the child can understand whar they do in the sentence. IMHO, "Let's find the nouns and verbs" is the best way to spend time in the early years. "Have, is, are, was, were, etc." is worth memorizing.
  7. I think the big problem is the delivery system, with the capsules breaking down in the stomach. I have little doubt that eventually there will be custom mixtures of bacterial flora delivered in such a way they make it to the right place. The research is certainly intriguing.
  8. The evidence so far on this is inconclusive. Not that we need healthy gut flora, but that OTC probiotics have any lasting effect. However, since the risk of side effects is practically nil (barring allergies) and it's no bother or discomfort to take them, unlike, say a Master Cleanse, it doesn't hurt anything except the pocketbook to take them in the meantime.
  9. :grouphug: I want everything to go back to like it was just a few months ago. I'm so tired of pretending to be mentally stronger than I am.
  10. Had one of those once, and the thought of another makes me sick to my stomach. :tongue_smilie: I suspect that nerve stimulation combined with the physical stress of the massage has more to do with the nausea than release of toxins. A quick google shows nausea is fairly common side afterwards. There's lots of talk about toxins on massage and alternative medicine sites, but nothing based on research. These toxins would have to be either eliminated or reabsorbed. One would assume they'd be measurable in either the blood or in urine or feces.
  11. Some potentially harmful compounds can accumulate in bones (e.g. lead) and fatty tissues, but massage won't "release" these. Neither will a specific diet.
  12. Detoxing (other than normal, healthy liver/kidney functions) is hogwash. A good diet is important for many reasons, but (barring unusual circumstances) avoiding toxin buildup is not one of them. I've never been able to figure out what the detoxers consider to be toxins. I'd be more inclined to worry about childhood exposure to lead if you live in an older house, gasoline fumes if you live on a very busy road, and exposure to endocrine disruptors.
  13. Thanks! I'll be sure to double check, but I'm pretty sure the itemized list of previous payments in the letter shows will count as documentation. It just seems a little like Christmas in March. Since we made a big payment in January, this would leave us owing almost nothing (and saving for DD the Younger's braces).
  14. A steamer (I can't remember the "Starbucks name" for these) or cocoa. I find their chia to be too sweet. Maybe some tea.
  15. Our group dental insurance through DH's work changed effective January 1. The previous group insurance had already paid their maximum of $1500 towards DD the Elder's braces, and between this and our payment, the balance on the account was $2900 as of January 1. The new insurance just CC'd me on a letter to the ortho, saying that they'll pay half of this, effectively almost doubling the insurance coverage we expected. Does this sound right? Is this what happens when group plans change? There was an itemized payment breakdown in the letter I just received... so they must know what the previous insurer had covered. It doesn't sound right to me. The ortho is closed this afternoon, so I can't ask them. :)
  16. OT and just a point of curiosity. Girl Scouts doesn't allow parents to drive any other than their own children unless they are GS members and have passed a security check. Does Boy Scouts not have this requirement?
  17. Exactly. There have been many threads on these boards about parents struggling with exactly those issues, parents not sitting around on their butts all day.
  18. Be cautious taking credit for anything other than genes. Being in an enriched environment is good for any child, but there are plenty of tremendously bright kids out there not ready to start reading at 3 and plenty of children who are brought up in enriched environments who do not appear to be gifted. Now to the OP. Except for attention span, my eldest didn't seem "different" until about 13-15 months when her speech took off. At that point she started demanding to know letter names, punctuation mark names and purpose, to have me write out sentences she dictated, etc. She would literally scream if she had to wait. She had me run my finger under the text as I read aloud so she could "read" along. This stopped at about 24 months. We're not sure when she started to read because she kept it secret, as she was scared I'd stop reading aloud if she could do it herself. Our children's librarian figured it out when she was about two and a half. By five she could read practically anything (allowing for interest of course... nothing denser than the Lang coloured Fairy Books).
  19. I can, but Cloudprint was already set up correctly (I use it with my phone).
  20. Sammy Keyes series by Wendelin Van Draanen Herculeah Jones by Betsy Byars
  21. Chrome apps and extensions, not Android. There's a fair bit of overlap though. Check it out at the Chrome store.
  22. I'd get the new Samsung Chromebook coming out I think next month. I have an acer Chromebook and the concept is everything I need; it's nice to be seamless between desktop, Chromebook, and phone. There's nothing wrong with the one I have (I was careful to get a full sized keyboard), but the next gen models are coming out and waiting a couple weeks is nothing.
  23. I haven't been feeling well lately and so have been watching TV much more than normal. Why do people like Alton Brown? If I want to feel talked down to, there's a 12yo in the house I can poke. :tongue_smilie:
  24. I'm so confused. I thought we were a cross between chimpanzees and pigs (and I only wish I were making that conjecture up).
  25. Ummm, I'll take the everlasting gobstopper please.
