Book a Week in 2010 - Week 23: way out west
Robin M replied to Robin M's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I just finished The Appeal by John Grisham. It really ticks me off when the bad guy wins. This one did not have a happy ending. I really hate that. Next up will be reading "The Reincarnationist" by M.J. Rose. -

Book A Week in 2010 - Week 22
Robin M replied to Robin M's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I just started Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Finished Tess Gerritsen's The Sinner. I don't know what the difference is but there are some books I read in which the characters have no moral center and the stories are morbid and dark such as the Silent Cry versus the ones like the Sinner where the characters do have a moral center and the story line doesn't bother me as much. -

Book A Week in 2010 - Week 21
Robin M replied to Robin M's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm currently reading The Silent Cry by Kenzaburo Oe for my nobel lit class. May I just say "meh." Morbid and gross and icky - if I wasn't reading it for class, I'd toss it across the room and forget about it. Looking forward to reading Silver Borne soon!!!! -
Today is the start of book week 21 and the quest to read 52 books in 52 weeks. Have you started Book # 21 yet? Mr. Linky is all set up on the 52 books blog and ready for you to link to your reviews. U is for ubiquitous ambiguity. Yep. What or who do you think of when you hear that? Once again I'm between books and have no idea what I'll be reading yet. What are you all reading?

Book a Week in 2010 - Week 20 T is for Tolstoy
Robin M replied to Robin M's topic in General Education Discussion Board
i just posted my review of The Killing of Mindi Quintana, a new book and first book written by Jeffrey Cohen. I tell you here what I didn't have the nerve to come right out and say on my blog. I kind of did it in a round about way and those who know me will get the fact I didn't like it. His writing leaves a bit to be desired, but who am I to criticize since I haven't gotten anything published yet. Right? However, I know what I like and this isn't it. Plus I like books with a moral lesson and characters that are good. Not one of the characters in the story seemed to have any redeeming moral values. I don't like ambiguous ending or endings in which the character gets away with something. The story just rubbed me the wrong way. -
I am in the midst of figuring out curriculum for 5th grade, reading wtm and reviewing what we've used so far. If you're in the midst of 5th grade or done with 5th grade, what are your hits and misses. If you are planning, what are you doing for 5th grade?

This week's theme on the 52 books blog: T is for Tolstoy. Have you read anything by Leo Toystoy yet? I was surprisingly captured by his writing when I read War and Peace. I'll be reading Anna Karenina at some point this year. But I think I'll wait til I'm done with my Nobel Literature class. What are you all reading this week? I just started "Black Water Rising" by Attica Locke.

Today is the start of book week 19 and the quest to read 52 books in 52 weeks. Have you started Book # 19 yet? Mr. Linky is all set up on the 52 books blog and ready for you to link to your reviews. This weeks theme: S is for Sawyer. Robert Sawyer is a science fiction author and one of his books http://www.wake has been nominated for a 2010 hugo award. I recently joined Aussiecon so I can vote on the hugo nominees this year. If you are interested or looking to expand your reading repertoire, I am posing a mini challenge of reading the nominees by the end of the year. We'll compare notes. I finally finished Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. It took a long time to read because it is full of conversations and debates between characters about socialism, humanism, religion, etc. Now I get to analyze it for my class. I have no idea what I'm going to read next, except that it's going to be fluffy twaddle. I am also having a giveaway on My Two Blessings as part of the John Sandford Days of Prey blog tour. Check it out and enter to win. Happy Mother's Day to you all. Hope you have a great, relaxing, day. What are you reading today?

Do you drink soda?
Robin M replied to ImAhomeSCHOOLmama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I totally gave up drinking soda's in January and haven't gone back since. I had a 4 soda a day habit. Also gave up chips and anything with corn syrup and corn in it at the same time. Dropped 12 pounds so far. Did it for health reasons. Don't miss it at all and my body is thanking me.
