  1. I make an oatmeal crust and it's great! It's still "normal" because it's just oatmeal but different. Most people love it! It's kinda like a thin oatmeal cookie!
  2. DS hates to read. Hates it. He's also not strong at it at all. I've been trying AAS, but it's just not getting done... DS18months pulls the tiles off the table and runs with them.... DS8 doesn't like doing it so it takes forever.... Any other thoughts? Should I stick this one out a while or switch? Experience with Sequencial Spelling for SWO or Spelling Power (I think that was another one someone recommended, but I can't quite recall the name). Help, please!
  3. Anyone "play" the Grocery Game? www.thegrocerygame.com You have to pay for it at the end of the trial, but it's $5 a month, maybe it's worth it? I'm trying to tighten our food bill. For a family of 5 (one 12yo boy!) it's almost $250 a week! That's out of control! :glare: I'm trying to do better at meal planning and we rarely eat out these days.
  4. I find that if I'm not going to be around as much as usual, the family tends to get a bit.... grouchy? Or just a little off kilter, I don't think dh can put love in a meal like someone that does it every day. :confused1: So..... I try to plan something for dessert. Something super easy. Sometimes it's a banana bread that's already made in the freezer that I take out. Or box brownies. Or I enlist dss12 to make chocolate chip cookies. Just a thought. Though maybe your family isn't as moody as mine! LOL
  5. I am so humbled by everyone's sincere comments and willingness to pray for someone they don't even know. "Thanks" just doesn't seem to fit. You all give me so much hope. And while it doesn't do justice.... thank you. Really. Thank you so so much. For the responses, for the willingness to add Joe to your prayers and being so supportive.
  6. This is highly Christian. For those of you that this is not your path, please be kind.... there's lots of threads out there, this may not be the one to respond to if it's not really your bag. For those of you with experience, please help?! DH is a non-believer. Through a number of events and a lot of praying his mind is now more open than ever regarding "the whole Jesus thing" as he puts it. He has heard that "Jesus saves you and he's the Messiah". So it's not that he hasn't been told the Message. He openly struggles with the intellectual part. Was Jesus REALLY the Messiah? Did he REALLY do all those miracle things? (lol) How do we actually KNOW he was crucified, is the Bible the only source?! He very much appreciates science and strong (unbias?) evidence to back things up.... anything really, but specifically Biblically. Can anyone give me one source to read/listen to (audiobook)? Here's what has come to mind: Evidence that Demands a Verdict More than a Carpenter The Case for Christ Is one of these better than the others? More clear? Is one of them "stronger" in terms of proving the Truth? TIA also, for those interested and needing something else to pray about, please join me in praying for the salvation of DH
  7. Thanks for the sneak peak tip and for the Just Mommies link. Today I cleaned my bathroom and laundry room. At least I got something done! And I'm also glad I'm not the only one that finds her site hard to look at?! Hopefully one of the two systems here will work out for me. Also, if anyone has read any good books on cleaning mention them....I love to read and am always looking for better ways to do it! Unfortunately I was never actually taught HOW to clean. Isn't that crazy! Now that I'm married with a house full of kids..... I wish I new better what I was doing!
  8. Who uses and likes the Fly Lady system? I really really really want it to work. I really DO want to be able to bless my husband with a clean out when we gets home from work.... why am I finding the website to bogged down and confusing? There's the Big Tent, hot spots, baby steps...? Can anyone explain the process to go though simply? I think I'm making this harder than it needs to be. I just want to open up my phone/computer/email and see what I'm supposed to do for the day. If there's a different approach I'm all ears! :bigear:
  9. So cute!~ Looks kinda girly.... we have all boys, but there seems to be a few things that would look super cute! Thanks!
  10. I could TOTALLY use some Fairy Made clothes these days....... maybe the next tooth ds loses, we'll get some pants?! lol
  11. We don't but a lot of new clothes... we use hand-me-downs and goodwill or our local kid's second hand shop. We've found some great stuff. But every now and again we would like to purchase something new. What places have kid's clothing that is made fairly? It doesn't necessarily have to be US made but made in a country without child labor....for a fair price.... all that stuff. Thoughts? I thought Land's End and LL Bean were, but apparently I'm wrong? What about Hanna Anderson? Other places?
  12. In an attempt to lighten our grocery budget and make healthier meals I'm trying to incorporate more beans/legumes in our diet. They're SO cheap! And SO SO healthy! Anyone have a great "go to" recipe? FYI- I love to cook (it's like therapy to me) and we enjoy lots of different foods/ethnic flavors.
  13. Is there a memory verse component to Telling Gods Story or the ABC devo for children does anyone know?
  14. I tried to look into this but was overwhelmed by the amount of things I needed to buy just for Bible alone! Now I see it's more for schools. Thanks. Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was a bit much.
  15. I grew up using A Beka in our small Christian school. Does anyone know if they have a homeschool Bible course and how it is? Gentle? Easy layout? Thanks for the suggestion on becoming familiar with the stories first....that's something I think I take for granted, but shouldn't with my kids.
  16. For those of you that offer Bible as a part of your day: I'm looking for a Bible program- something very very easy. A lot of hand-holding is needed. We just started going to a church and are liking it. DS will be in 2nd and does not have much experience with Bible/church. A gentle introduction if you will.... FWIW- I've had lots of church/Bible/theory in my day, but am married to an unbeliever. I have no idea why he let me homeschool! But he did, and he's coming around to the "church thing". My kids have been sheltered from Christianity mostly. Please be nice. :(
  17. I've only kinda heard about involving God/religion in keeping a house clean. Could some people share on their religious views/reason to keep house. Also, if there are any resources on how/why to keep house please include them. I'm more curious than anything. FWIW- I clean house because if I didn't, my brain would fall out and get lost in the mess on the counter.
  18. What does everyone use as far as a lesson planning/tracking program? Online? Or program? Any suggestions would be great....but I do have a mac, not everything works on a mac :(
  19. What if you've been saving your money and want to take a "gap year" or trip. What if you're going to do something else.... study a language in another country....take care of a sick/elderly family member, get married and become a stay at home mom (unrealistic for sure!), my point is, that there is more than just 3 options.... I homeschool because I want my kids to dream big... not inside the small box of "what's normal". I wouldn't want to sit through a dumb orientation session for apprenticeship if I was going to take a gap year... waste of time! I think that potential law is crazy!
  20. Sounds like I need to break out the 100EZ Lessons book from way back when. Also, DS has an eye apt in 2 weeks to check for a number of things, sight, tracking, focus..... I've posted a few times about our struggle and someone usually chimes in with an eye related thought. Thanks for reminding me!
  21. Thanks for the responses. Mainly we're having trouble blending. ETC teaches the sounds well, but mashing them all together is tricky for us. So, I've exhausted my use of the program after 2 1/2 solid years. He does well with each individual sounds but looking that the whole word and making it be a whole word is challenging. And I think I need to look more for a program of mastery rather than "spiral" soo..... what program does that? Anyone know? Mainly teaching to blend the sounds together.
