1. I got in the habit during Ramadan of baking again, but not loaves. This is super yummy, good with soups/stews or to dip in hummus or baba ganoush or lebni or........ you get the idea: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/329677635220055114/ It is really easy and forgiving. I also started making my own tortillas (just wanted fish tacos one night and didn't feel like running to the store, now my kids want only homemade LOL oops!) : https://www.pinterest.com/pin/329677635220069772/
2. Hi all, for those who remember me, it's been a while. <insert wave emoji here> Board change over and I was one of those who had mixed up user names, finally figured it out. Was out of the country for 2 months, then if any of you recall my posts last year about things not going well, well let's say it headed downhill in January. Not worst case scenario, but bad enough that I am trying my best to make my 5 year exit plan into a 3 year plan and hope nothing major happens that catches me off guard before everything is ready. Being vague on purpose, if you know what I mean. But end result will probably be me being a single mom..... I'm starting to come to terms with it... 23 years of marriage, you never really expect it.... So..... bright spot...new kitten, a boy 10 weeks old, rescued from the shelter, named Creamsicle (8yo twins 1st pet, they named him). He is a little prince and fits in perfectly. He is super tiny, which you can't really tell in the pics, but has those eyes......
3. would those pirate booty puffs work? They are pretty "light" and fluffy. Or those flavored quaker popped rice snacks?
4. I'm teaching a Forensics Science Class next year at a coop and using this site: http://bsapp.com/forensics_illustrated/ All free and the teacher is helpful if you need to email him. I also am using this book: https://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Guide-Forensic-Science-Experiments/dp/1449334512/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1529690330&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=illustrate+guide+to+forensics+lab The book is great so far!
5. Thanks Regentrude! I was eyeing a couple of those series. I was thinking about the audio option as I have audible and several of those are offered. Did you miss having the guide book??? Or do the audio versions come with that?
6. DS14 will be a freshman next year. He loves history and on his own watches tons of documentaries, etc. He knows quite a bit about history and enjoys it. For high school, I want to let him explore this AND practice some essential skills (note taking, a report or two, and studying for exams). I will include his other classes for your information, so you can see what else he is doing. English: Essentials in Writing and Literature (with their grading), CTC word roots (finish series) and editor in chief (finish series), finish up some spelling (sequential spelling, he is not my speller) Science: Fascinating Education Bio + Anatomy with home labs from the "illustrated guide to home biology experiments" Math: Aleks, finish Alg I and Geom, with patty paper geo for fun Foreign Language: Russian (online) and Arabic (online) (Arabic will be slower and about 1/2 credit per year, just to keep him fresh) Electives: 1/2 credit - Intro to Computer Networking (Dad is a network engineer and has picked this online class, if he enjoys, will expand to 1 credit), 1/2 credit - Forensic Science (in a co-op, lab class with exams and assignments), 1/2 credit- public speaking through 4H (competes in local tournaments, will add class assignments), Archery with 4H (he spends a lot of time on this, so hours will go towards his PE credit, also competes in tournaments), Typing it out that seems like a lot maybe, but the public speaking, archery, Forensic Science, Russian and computer networking are all things he picked and would do in his free time anyway, so I am just structuring it and putting requirements to give him credit for them. Make sense? The computer networking (Cisco) he wants to learn as his dad has contacts that could get him awesome part time jobs once he turns 16 earning good $$. His heavy load course will be English and Math mainly. So, History...... I want to do ancient to maybe 1300 this year, renaissance to early modern (1300- ~1800) next year, modern history junior year, US history senior year (maybe as dual enrollment). I was looking at the Great Course lectures, like this one which covers to Charlemagne. What would I use after? Any suggestions? Would taking notes (plan to take time to teach him Cornell method), writing a few papers and taking tests I make (or if anyone knows of premade tests lol??? would like short answer/essay tests) be sufficient? I would grade him on the notes, papers, exams. Also I wondered if anyone had used this subscription option with their Amazon prime membership? It is less expensive (I think $8/month) , but does not seem to have all the history lectures I was considering. I don't see any where a mention of the study guides, but i wonder if some could be purchased? If you did Great Courses Plus, did you find some lectures were not included that you wanted? Or is getting the DVDs used a better option? Thanks so much for any input!!! High school is fun, but exhausting!!!!
7. If she issued a call tag, then ups will have the label. Amazon does that all the time, just package it up and have it waiting by the door. They will ring the bell for it and give you a receipt.
8. 40 clove garlic chicken Tandorri chicken Butter chicken Hungarian goulash (the authentic one) There is a blog like crockpot365 and lots of those are main dish type things
9. I know lots of us discuss produce prices and delivery options (those boxes). Well here is a new idea: Imperfectproduce.com Sounds cheap and perfect for smoothie lovers. Anyone tried it?
10. Ice (the brand, not from your freezer ðŸ˜) sam's club carries them. Walmart has their own brand of fruit flavored sparkling waters.
11. Gonoodle.com Warning it is addictive and your kids may go around singing the silly songs. But it will wear them out.
12. The rice is raw. It is important to use calrose, other rices make the rolls burst. This link shows how to mix your own: http://www.geniuskitchen.com/recipe/arabic-7-seven-spice-bokharat-194721 Sent from my SM-S327VL using Tapatalk
13. Mine is without tomato sauce. I use the microwave trick and then remove the large veins and make mine all finger sized (so larger leaves may be cut into 2 or 3 pieces) Filling: calrose rice, ground beef or lamb, 7 spices (not the Chinese one, the middle eastern version) I eyeball the ratio. We like them meatier than some. Fill and roll. Line bottom of stockpot with some peeled, sliced potatoes (these are yummy as they absorb the flavors) Layer the cabbage rolls adding in peeled garlic cloves between layers (some smash the garlic for more garlicky flavor). Cover with an upside down glass or ceramic plate. Then mix lemon juice with water and pour over till you can just see the liquid level even with the top layer of rolls. Cover pot and put on low heat for several hours. You can check them and add more water/lemon juice if it is getting low. Be generous with the lemon juice as the lemon and garlic combined make the dish.
14. We just got back from 5 weeks in Lebanon and Egypt, but I'm already planning for this year. Hopefully Europe for 3 weeks in march or April to visit family. Then the kids want to visit Turkey, so maybe sept or Oct, have to see when the ticket prices drop. Plus I hope to plan a few weekend trips in there to grand canyon, San diego, northern ca. The kids would love to see the redwoods.
15. I have no family (all passed when I was in college) and DH's family all live overseas, so about 8000 miles as the crow flies. About a 23 hour plane ride with connections.
16. Could you put together an Amazon pantry delivery of ready to eat healthy snacks, etc to be delivered for her?
17. We are leaving in a few days to Egypt and I am taking along the kindle, but I wanted to load up a book for DS14 (8th grade, but HS reading level) to read about Egypt. Modern or Ancient, either one. We were set to do ancient history next year. We are currently in the 1800s. He enjoys history in general. He likes to read mysteries, etc. Maybe something about Napoleon in Egypt? This trip is a bit last minute because Father in law is not well. So I didn't get to plan much. Any suggestions? Thanks
18. I asked dh, family has maids. I am on my cell, but he said be open about it, do it as a thank you, parting gift in front of the family. Explain that it is an american custom and perhaps give the hosts a gift. Most of these girls work through an agency and it is very $$$ to get the visas, provoide medical coverage and the host family pays all that. Most will not take the $$. She will most likely send it straight to family. I can type more later if you want when i get on a pc.
19. we JUST got 3 renewed and it took 3 weeks almost exactly.
20. Oh no, my kids go for the good expensive stuff. DS13 can pack away the sashimi..... and DD11 only likes the salmon........... It really would be cheaper for them to go get the all you can eat for $24, but we usually get take away, because not all of us like it. I did try CA rolls once on my own. They said my rice wasn't sweet/sticky enough.
21. Penelope Cruz when we were boarding a international return flight in Europe. We had DS3 and DD1 at the time and we passed through 1st class to board. She was sitting there, approached us and went ga-ga over DD1 and how cute she was.
22. Glad I like spicy foods, meat (LOVE kabobs) and salads wish I liked more veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, etc) and things with smooth textures (like puddings, cream sauces, even bananas, it's a texture thing) Glad I don't like sushi (when we get it for DH and the kids it is $$$$$) and chewy candies like gummies, starbursts (tough on the teeth) Wish I didn't like pastries/breads and rice (I REALLY don't need the carbs/sugar)
23. We had regular weekly service (OT) but we paid before services rendered (at check in) for our copay. Could you do that? I am trying to think of places here and all do pre pay for services (therapy, clinics, massage, etc), except maybe hair salon or oil change places where prices might change during the service, where I wouldn't be allowed to leave till my card was run. Could you run the card as soon as you know the total , but before the client leaves? I actually would prepay 4 weeks at a time for OT due to a minimum charge for using a card. And I do have overdraft on my Visa Debit. But if someone doesn't have a savings account to link, then they would not have overdraft protection. ETA: Paypal might be an option, because as I recall Paypal requires buyers to have a "backup" method of payment if the 1st fails. Like my 1st is one MC, but I have another Visa as backup.
24. Hamburgers or Unstuffed peppers with rice. Undecided yet, but hamburger meat is defrosting.
25. We belong to a "homeschool" 4H club. We meet one day a week during usual school hours, so only homeschoolers join. Projects are as $ or $$ as you want them to be. This year we are doing: photography, archery, painting, sewing, home ec, STEM challenges, Small animal (chinchilla we already own), Public Speaking, Leadership, and Sewing. Plus my 2 youngest are in primaries (cloverbud) and they meet one of those days a month. I am a volunteer and run 2 of those projects. My kids love it and DS was elected to an office this year. The group of kids are overall great.
