  1. You might want to look at a website called History Book by Book. It's got book suggestions for different History time periods.
  2. Thanks everyone! I'm making a list of all of these! This should keep us busy for a while. 🙂
  3. I'm jumping back into the group as this is the happening place for all questions. I am looking for book recommendations for a Christian book that is spiritually uplifting. My sister and I like to read the same book and email at the end of each chapter to discuss our thoughts. The last book we read was Hinds' Feet in High Places which was so good, but we're stuck as to what to read next. Then life got in the way and it's been a couple of months since we finished that book. It's time to begin a new book. I don't even know what I'm asking for. I'd like something that talks about how having Jesus in our lives is positive. Maybe how God is working a plan in our lives. It can be fiction or non-fiction. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
  4. Interesting. I've done something similar. I just go through the alphabet and think of words so I might say A is for apple, arrow and ant. B is for ball, baby and basket. and just keep going. Usually I get bored and my thoughts wander but I do eventually fall asleep if I'm tired. Another thing I do is prayer. My therapist told me to pray for everyone I've ever met in my life and when I run out of them, start praying for random people or happenings. Again, I get bored and my mind wanders. The problem with my mind wandering is it usually involves high anxiety thoughts which do not help me fall asleep. Instead I feel agitated and angry and then to shut off my mind, I get up and distract myself with reading or music. *sigh*
  5. I am outside every day for an hour. I take two 30 minute walks, one at 4:00 pm and one at 7:00 pm. I also do a 10 - 15 minute dumbbell workout. I've got a personal trainer who is yet one more person who is telling me I need to be sleeping. It's frustrating. I appreciate all of your suggestions. I got a response from my sleep tech already. He says they don't treat insomnia. The sleep study I did showed I had mild sleep apnea and the data they're getting from my machine on a daily basis has shown those apneas greatly reduced, so the cpap is doing it's job. He told me to call Behavioral Health for insomnia. Well, my psych doc is the one who has prescribed the sleeping pills so she is the only one treating me.
  6. I fall asleep naturally, without meds, around 9:30 - 10:00 pm. I just don't stay asleep more than an hour. The latest I can seem to make myself stay up is 11:00 pm but it's extremely difficult. So imagine that I wake up by midnight. I'm then wide awake and nothing will allow me to go back to sleep, not even another sleeping pill. So I get up because two doctors have told me not to stay in bed if I'm not sleeping. So I come out the living room and read. Or I'll put on music and write in my diary or color. I don't get sleepy again until about 7:00 am. So if I don't go to sleep then and sleep until 11:00 am, I'd be getting less than 2 hours sleep. And I really did try to stay up one time and fell asleep repeatedly all day. It was terrible. I was totally useless, lethargic and achy. I didn't sleep any better that night either. I've just not wanted to repeat that. My therapist wishes I wouldn't sleep in the mornings either but she has no answer as to what I'm supposed to do if I wake up at 12:00 - 1:00 am after getting only a couple of hours of sleep.
  7. Ok, I didn't know that. I'll make an appointment asap.
  8. I've never heard of that medication. I've tried numerous meds. The worst was Ambien. I was eating when I shouldn't have been, and having conversations with my family while under its influence only to wake up the next day and have absolutely no memory of any of it.
  9. I have mild sleep apnea and sleep with a cpap machine. My sleep doesn't change whether or not I use it which is frustrating. My psych doctor has me on this med combination. She doesn't think the supplements help as they've never helped before but I am desperately trying everything I can to get sleep. That combination worked great the first few nights and I slept two sleeping periods, waking only once in the night. But the past 2 nights I'm back to sleeping 1-1.5 hours in my first sleeping period, being up until 6:00 - 7:00 am and going back to bed to sleep another 3 - 4 hours. She suggested I take both at the same time but I'm the one who decided to stagger it because taking them at the same time is wasting them. Together, they do not keep me asleep any longer than they do individually, but if I save one for later, I'm guaranteed to get at least another 1-1.5 hours. I do think I should email my sleep doc and ask for a second study. The first was a fluke as I actually slept a solid 9 hours that one night. I was so mad because it wasn't representative of my normal sleeping pattern. But they discovered mild sleep apnea and blamed my lack of sleep on that. But the cpap hasn't helped so I'm wondering if there is something more.
  10. Hi everyone. I haven't been here in a while although I've peeked in to see what's going on. I miss this board with all it's awesome insight and help. I am curious about personal experiences by other women my age, 40's - 50's who are in or have gone through perimenopause. I've had insomnia for over 15 years so I can't blame it completely on perimenopause but I'm wondering if it made it worse. Every time I try something, it works for 3 - 5 days and then becomes a sugar pill it seems like. My current plan is taking 330 mg magnesium, 10 mg melatonin and one 3 mg Lunesta tablet at bedtime. I can sleep anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, although most nights it's about 1.5 hours. Then I get up and read a while and then take a 50 mg Trazodone and sleep another 1 - 2 hours. My best sleep is between 8:00 am - 11:00 am. I'm averaging 5 hours a night/morning and am up before lunch. I go to bed at the same time, 10:30 pm because I'm super tired and have discovered my bedtime has no bearing on when I wake up. Whether I go to bed at 11:00 pm or midnight, I sleep 1.5 hours and wake up. So I'm frustrated beyond belief. I have a bedtime routine with no screens. Occasionally I read my Kindle but even now I'm trying to get away from that and read only print books. I don't read anything exciting. I take my meds at the same time each night. And I'm up by 11:00 am most days, 11:30 am if I decide to just lie there and feel sorry for myself that I'm not getting enough sleep. As for other symptoms, I miss occasional periods but that's it. No night sweats or hot flashes. No mood swings. And I'm 54 years old so I feel like I should be well into symptoms by now. The longest I've gone without a period is 5 months which was heavenly but then my body decided it wasn't ready to let go completely. I had someone recently ask me about hormone replacement therapy but I don't think I'm a good candidate because I don't suffer from anything except lack of sleep. Is my experience abnormal? I'm thinking of making another appointment with an actual GYN MD rather than just a PA, and see if I can get some answers. Last time he laid it out for me in easy terms but nothing has changed since then and it's probably been over 2 years since I've seen him. I had just started skipping periods. Wow, I didn't realize I've been dealing with that for so long. It doesn't bother me. Well, I'd like to be done completely but my periods are relatively easy so they cause no suffering. Any words of encouragement? I'm not complaining that I'm not suffering from traditional symptoms. I'm just curious why my body seems to be in no hurry to move forward with this process.
  11. Um, I was misunderstood. I NEVER said I expected the item to be shipped as soon as I paid. I meant getting an email from the person thanking me for the purchase. Really, I've always gotten emails from sellers before they ship the item to let me know when they can get to the post office. So I do the same thing for my buyers. I just thought that was normal. Guess not. Yes Regentrude, it's just books but they are important to me or I wouldn't have purchased them.
  12. I know it's too soon but as a seller, I acknowledge the buyer as soon as they purchase my item. I let them know when I'll be shipping the item so they know I'm not ignoring them. I won an auction 2 days ago from a seller who has been an ebay member since 2018 but has no reviews. So I sent an email today asking if he/she can let me know when the books will be mailed out so I have an idea on when to expect them. I hope I don't regret buying from someone who won't ship the books out in a timely manner. I read the seller has 30 days to ship an item after purchase, but they get dinged if they don't ship within the time mentioned. I can't get back to the original listing so I don't know if a shipping time was mentioned. I've never encountered a seller who doesn't respond within a day of a purchase. Ebay tells me the item should arrive between April 16 and April 20 but it's not even marked shipped so I don't believe that for a minute.
  13. Ok, another update. I still wake up after 1-2 hours of being asleep but I'm only staying up for about an hour before I feel so tired I can't keep my eyes open. Last night I slept for about 1.5 hours, then was up for 1 hour, then slept 9 hours after that! I haven't taken my Trazodone since I started taking the Calm Sleep. This is amazing stuff! I probably sound ridiculous but if you have never suffered insomnia before, you may not understand just how truly amazing I feel getting so much rest! I'm off to email my support team my success. 🙂
  14. Build Your Library. I have Levels 4 and 7. It looks like Level 7 has the Usborne World Religions book and creation stories. I guess that's a good place to start. I wasn't going to start BYL for a few weeks, so I'll hang tight and check out the Dummies books in the meantime.
  15. Oh, I didn't even think about those. I'll check. Thanks!
  16. I read through some of the thread about the OP's dd asking about why people weren't Christians. I think that is what she said. That got me to wondering, is there a world religions curriculum somewhere that does justice to all religions? I realize it's going to be a subjective thing, but I took a beginning religions course in college many decades ago and remember thinking it fascinating. I am asking about a curriculum because I'm envisioning a theme of books, like one explaining each religion and/or maybe one or more comparing them. Suggestions? or if not a curriculum, book suggestions? Doesn't Sonlight's high school courses include Bible studies that incorporate other ideas with the hope of strengthening their own faith?
  17. I've said prayers for your mom, you and your family. May God envelop all of you in His warm and healing embrace.
  18. Prayers for your mom and that all of you will know how best to help her in times like these.
  19. I had to talk with my dd about that. She and her fiance wanted to buy a house before they got married but they decided against it. They are renting a house but don't want to buy it because it's got too many problems. I told her at least she knows about them! No house will be perfect. They are getting married this month and hope to buy a house next year after they rebuild their savings.
  20. We hired a realtor who represented us as sellers for a flat rate since we already had the buyer. I would imagine you could find a realtor who would represent you as the buyer for a flat rate as well. Call a few and find out!
  21. I took half a dose the first night and slept 2 shifts: 4.5 hours then 2.5 hours (I think that was it). I took a full dose last night and slept 2 shifts again: 4 hours then 2.5 hours. It's been quite a while since I slept 4 straight hours. I've done it two nights in a row and I'm so happy. I was bummed that I woke up. I had hoped with a full dose I'd sleep longer but at least I got a 2nd shift in to give me more sleep for the day. I have still been tired today despite the additional sleep, but I don't feel utterly drained. So that's an improvement.
  22. The Secret Zoo by Bryan Chick It's free to read on kindle if you have prime. It's why I gave it a try. It's a 6-book set and I'm on book 2. It's a real page turner! I wish I had kids to share this with! My library has the first 5 so I'll have to buy the last one. Amazon has books 2 through 4 free on kindle if you have AmazonKids which is $2.99/month. Books 5 and 6 must be purchased. Obviously you can check your free resources as well. 🙂 Just sharing.
  23. He got back to me again and said there is a problem with the polaris catalogs. The extension can find some of my books at my library, but not all of them. I sent him some examples such as one book that I currently have checked out so I know the library has it! The extension tells me "no similar titles are found'. He said it finds them by isbn. He's working on an update to hopefully get out this weekend and will hopefully address this glitch.
