  1. My mum's house was like this. It's how she chose to live. The cooking surfaces were wiped, old food was thrown out and dishes were washed. Clothes were also washed. No other housework was done for 30 years. I didn't say anything and in the end my brother cleared the house. Nothing would have changed if I had said something.
  2. I took a walk round the village at dawn, before the forecast rain came in. Created a makeshift standing desk at home and stood most of the day. Back stretches mostly every 20 minutes.
  3. 32. Living together 6 years. Married 3 years. No kids. Bought a flat. Eta first house - I was 45 and the kids were 8 and 11.
  4. Just a walk up the den between showers, but faster this time.
  5. In the UK you need to renew your licence every three years from age 70. There's no test unfortunately - just a declaration of any illnesses and an affirmation that you are fit to drive. A doctor can break patient confidentiality in the public interest and contact the licensing authorities if s/he thinks a patient is unfit to drive who is refusing to stop. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has a scheme where you can get your driving observed for an hour and receive a confidential report about improvements. It has no weight in law but might help carers. We have downsized to a village with a shop. It also has direct bus links to the two nearest towns and the two nearest cities. There are regular buses to the nearest train station. The choice of location was strongly influenced by these factors, in addition to being able to stay with a good and thriving GP practice.
  6. My mum stopped riding her 125cc motorbike at age 85. She didn't have the strength any longer to reliably pull it onto its stand. I suspect that it was a good time for her to stop due to issues around reaction times too. If I had tried to force the issue based on a previous document, she would just have said that she had changed her mind. I had to force other issues with her where she had previously agreed to measures that she later considered an outrageous infringement of her liberty. Knowing that she had agreed previously did help me.
  7. And there are many people with reduced reaction times and physical strength who don't have dementia. A document may help in reminding them of their good intentions.
  8. I walked up the den this morning before a predicted weather front brings rain and wind this afternoon. I intend to do lots of light housework for the rest of the day to keep moving. Back stretching every 20 minutes.
  9. I did a short walk up a hill and lots of back stretching.
  10. Re your - pension. There's a deduction system if you get other public pensions - that might be the issue. Husband's US SS will be reduced because he will be receiving some UK state pension.
  11. This is the same as for current spouses, as I understand it. I only have two years of SS contribution myself. However, when I reach retirement age I will get 50 percent based on Husband's contributions. If he were to die thereafter, I would get 100 percent.
  12. Six miles of gentle walking today in two sessions, plus back stretches every twenty minutes. I think things are getting a bit better - the pain wasn't as acute this morning.
  13. We enjoyed this - just make a smooth dish with your puree instead of the squash https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/food/2022/jan/01/meera-sodha-vegan-recipe-kiri-hodi-butternut-squash
  14. I'm sorry. It's very hard. We left Asia, quite burnt out and done with that part of the world, in 1992 and moved to California. Work didn't happen there so in 1994 we moved to London for a job. We enjoyed London but the job disappeared in a downturn and the only opportunity on offer for us two and our newborn in 1997 was ... Hong Kong. Thinking of you.
  15. I guess she could have insurance, but I don't know how that works for completely private treatment. I've only heard of insurance to supplement the NHS.
  16. For curiosity - her name isn't Princess Catherine, just as there wasn't a Princess Diana. They are/were both First Name, Princess of Wales. Only people born royal are Princess First Name
  17. She is paying out of pocket at a private hospital, not using the NHS. I could get that treatment too if I had the money.
  18. I'm sorry - it's hard. When Husband was job searching in his late fifties, he became convinced that he was being shortlisted as a 'balance' candidate. The companies thought they wanted someone younger, cheaper and - they believed - more dynamic, but they threw him into the pool to firm up their thinking. He finally had to take on a related kind of work that he really hated to carry him through to retirement. Meanwhile I started to build my own career to compensate for the reduced earnings.
  19. I haven't quite reached that glorious stage of don't-care-ness, but I suddenly thought - in a departmental reorganisation meeting where my contribution was denigrated and a similar one by an academic colleague was considered gratefully - that they have lost my dedication to the corporate whole. I care about the students whom I support and the colleagues to whom I'm close. That's it. Eta I'm private pension (small) minus four years and state pension/US SS minus six years.
  20. Went to the physio today. Walked there and back and spent the day standing.
