  1. I don't have a good enough memory to keep track of actors and their misdeeds. Half the time I can't remember the names of the ones I like. With that said, I am surprised that some take offense at actors who use their celebrity to further their causes, whatever those causes may be. Everyone uses whatever platform he or she may have to speak about what he or she thinks needs to be spoken about. Some stand around the water cooler at work and try to convince coworkers to donate to a cause, some convince friends and relatives to sponsor them in a walk-a-thon, some use internet blogs or message boards, some write magazine articles, some write books. Some, who have achieved a degree of celebrity, go on Oprah. Each of us has something we believe in, some more passionately than others. I would guess that each of us uses the platform that is available in order to tell others how we feel, or convince others to follow our cause. Celebrities just have a bigger platform. I don't fault them for using their celebrity to further their cause. I would do the same. I suspect you would too. The difference is that you believe in your cause and think you'd be right, whereas the celebrity that you fault for doing it has views opposing yours. Yes, I mean you, personally, not the general you.:tongue_smilie:
  2. Great suggestions - everyone (I am not motivated to figure out multi-quoting). Keep 'em coming and Thanks!:)
  3. I hate to admit that I have never been in a Cracker Barrel. <yikes!>
  4. I may drive right off the road if a book causes me to daydream about Brendan Fraser. I really heart him. such a cutie
  5. Good choices. DS1 has already read Inkheart (and most other Corneila Funke books. He's like me in that when he discovers an author he likes, wants to read every book every written by that author until it sickens him). I hadn't thought of The Golden Compass and a trilogy sounds like a good bet for 30 hours of driving. Do you think my very conservative christian mother who is accompanying us will be offended by any of the content? I only say this because of all the brouhaha about the movie. ETA: Just read a review of The Book Thief and may get it for myself!
  6. Well, maybe it is the rebel in me talking, but I'd find out what books were being banned or censored and then those are the books I'd do anything to save, regardless of my personal feelings about said books!
  7. I think I'll be in jeopardy of mutiny if any one of my children catches a whiff of something "educational" on this trip and they're too familiar with SOTW for me to sneak it in under other pretenses :tongue_smilie:
  8. from the audio book thread it seems as if many of you/your children enjoy audio books. We will soon be taking a multi-day driving trip and I'd like to have a couple (few) audio books for the whole family to enjoy in between videos, games & whining. My oldest has already read the Harry Potter books and is now reading the Percy Jackson series and enjoys both very much. We've all read (or had read to us) Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Heidi, War of the Worlds, etc. Any suggestions of audio books available for Ipod (I can listen to my ipod through my car stereo) that would keep the oldest & middle (10 & 8) interested and perhaps the youngest (6) while not causing me to fall into a coma and drive off the road?
  9. This is exactly what I was going to write. I may have a different opinion if one of my children was an auditory learner or had issues with reading comprehension/retention ETA: I do think listening to an audio book is "closer" to reading the book than seeing the movie or a production as long as the audio book is not abridged. the other problem with audio books is they keep playing after one falls asleep, so it is difficult to remember where one has left off. (My son and I had the best naps while trying to listen to Sherlock Holmes - the voice actor's voice was very soothing!)
  10. Ah Yes, the very common subset: apathetic agnostic I, on the other hand, vacillate between agnostic and deist - never theist. Today I checked deist.
  11. The book is actually much better than the movie. For the movie, they had to change John's auditory hallucinations (yes, I know that term isn't quite precise enough) to visual hallucinations. While I agree the movie was excellent, the book is so much more detailed and really gives a sense of what it was like for him as he descended into his world of paranoid schizophrenia. I cannot advise as to language or other content, as I read it as an adult.
  12. yup, even in a simple, straightforward poll like yours, somebody needs "other" When I work (at night, 12-hr shifts), I usually get 4-5 hours of sleep during the day. Usually broken up because I wake up. If I'm very lucky (and medicated) I'll get 6. NO it is not enough. When I'm not working, I try to get 8-9 but usually end up with 5-6 because I really can't fall asleep early after being up all night for work. I never feel as if I've gotten enough sleep. I recently went on vacation with only one of my kids (the one that likes to sleep in). After a few days, I discovered that 7-8 hours of solid sleep makes me feel like I assume all other humans walking around acting chipper feel.
  13. I'm surprised that someone with the avatar of Scarlett O'Hara doesn't know what lower social status means! Although the specific term "white trash" is perhaps not used to mean the same for all or in all areas of the country, I think we can all agree it is derogatory. For an example of money not being the issue, I've heard Brittney Spears referred to as "white trash." Now, think what you will about the gal, but she was worth quite a bit of $$. I've heard the term commonly used to depict a wide variety of behaviors or appearances.
  14. being "white trash" has nothing to do with money. This term is used by some to make them feel better about others who are deemed of lower social status.
  15. nothing that a wood chipper didn't take care of. :001_smile:
  16. I certainally feel that you (or anyone, for that matter) can speak their beliefs in public, as long as I am not held captive, required to listen, or required to show respect for such publically spoken beliefs.
  17. I didn't realize it was meat truck season already.... The meat truck guy came by last week. I work nights. I was sleeping. By the time I stumbled to the front door all I saw was the backside of the guy going down my front steps as my oldest son shouted after him "...and my mom says your meat is terrible!" I have no idea what was said before that to make him beat such a hasty retreat and was happy that ds had handled it before I had to scare the guy with my "I've only been asleep two hours since working all night look/breath" combo.
  18. I don't wear rings at work because I think they harbor microorganisms (I'm an RN). I really, really try to remember to put them on when I go out somewhere. Last time I went on vacation (sans hubby) I wore my wedding ring, engagement ring, mother's ring (that is actually made from his first wife's wedding ring - she's dead), anniversary ring, & a claddagh ring dh gave me for some reason I've since forgotten. I've never been so uncomfortable in my entire life with all those rings on and was paranoid about leaving them somewhere. I like to have them, and kinda wish I were the kind of gal who liked jewelry. But I'm the kinda gal who asked for a rototiller for one birthday, and forgets the exact date of her anniversary.
  19. I once knew a tobacco chewer who spit into an empty pepsi can. Please don't ask me to recall how I discovered his spit receptacle (no, I didn't drink it, but it was gross).
  20. nose picking (in my opinion) belongs on the list of other personal activities that, while perfectly acceptable, should be done in private. So, instead of pretending that the activity doesn't occur or discouraging an activity that we all have done or still do, rather one should encourage seeking the appropriate venue for said activity (ie the bathroom or bedroom with door closed). And yes, I say "we all" because I truly believe anyone who says they have never picked is engaging in a particular form of revising personal history.
  21. picking and eating may actually boost the immune system.... Y'all act as if you've never done this. I suppose y'all don't pee in the shower either?
  22. Seems like these days those "last minute flight deals" have gone by the wayside. From time to time you can find them between two very well traveled, popular cities. Airlines are cutting flights and more flights are oversold, so those last minute deals to get butts in the seats are not available. Good luck to you!
  23. I think the rule of thumb is 24 hours fever free....but not everything that causes a fever is contagious or contagious to the same degree and some things are contagious prior to fever onset.
