  1. For some reason I can't seem to reach this site. I am overseas. I wonder if that is the problem!!! This is why I asked in the forum.
  2. Can anyone share the Table of Contents for Rod and Staff English grades 1, 2, 3, 4? I am teaching an ESL student, and I am trying to place her. I used to be able to see the scope and sequence at www.milestone.com, but the website is not accessible now. Thank you.
  3. I used to buy them from www.milestonebooks.com but I can't seem to connect to this site. Where else can I purchase new Rod and Staff books?
  4. Hello, In teaching phonograms, what sound does "a" say in "about" and "around?" Is it the third sound? Is it something else? Is there a rule for why "a" says the sound that it says? Thank you.
  5. If you teach phonograms, can you tell me how to explain the "a" in about and around? Is "a" saying the third sound? Is it saying something else? Is there a rule to explain this? TIA
  6. I just finished LOE with my 9 and 7 year old nephews. I am not sure what to do next. Any suggestions?
  7. Thank you everyone for your replies. Now it makes more sense to me. I am learning so much from these phonograms!!
  8. When you teach using phonograms, how do you explain the word "the?" Why doesn't it say "th--ee"?
  9. Actually, I was wondering about "the" too. Can you explain the reasoning for "thuh" instead of "thee"? Thank you.
  10. I have another phonogram question. I know that English words do not end in V, so "have" has an "e" at the end. For save, the silent "e" makes the a long...so it says "save" with a long a sound. But why don't we say "have" with a long a sound? Why is the a sound short a sound?
  11. I can hear it when I say it slowly. I need to practice saying it slowly. Thank you!
  12. That's really good to hear! Thank you!
  13. Thanks for the link for the site. I hear the difference, but it still doesn't sound like t-r-u-ck...it sounds more like tr-u-ck. But I do hear the difference between "ch" and "tr".
  14. I am confused with the "tr" sound in teaching phonograms. I've looked at different phonogram programs and "tr" is not a phonogram. But to me, "tr" sounds more like "ch" than t-r... For example, "truck" has 4 phonograms t-r-u-ck, but it sounds more like ch-r-u-ck. Am I saying this wrong? Should I be saying t-r-u-ck, t-r-e-e, and t-r-i-ck etc? Thank you in advance for your help.
  15. In LoE, how to they explain why "a" is long in "save" and short in "have"? These words both end in v, so shouldn't they both use the short sound? My son just asked me this, and I am confused. Thank you.
  16. Hello, I am currently tutoring a 13 year old (7th grade) stuent. He has a very difficult time writing. When he writes a paragraph, he will just repeat the same ideas and not really say much. He really doesn't know what to write about. I have tell him what to write. He was born and raised in the United States, but his parents are non-English speakers. They are not very communicative in their own language. His parents never read to him and currently do not discuss anything with him. When he is home, he doesn't speak very much. I the the lack of stimulation from an early age is part of the reason that he doesn't know what to write. Would copy work help him? If so, what material would be best for him? Is there something else that could help him? TIA for you help.
  17. Does anyone have lesson plans for Chalkdust Algebra that you would be willing to share? Thank you.
  18. Does anyone have lesson plans for Chalkdust Algebra that you would be willing to share? Thank you.
  19. Hello, I was wondering if the PA Homeschoolers course are much harder than the courses from TPS. My son has taken 2 TPS courses every year for the past 2 years and has done well. I am thinking of having him take 3 PA Homeschoolers courses this year--AP English Language, Macroeconomics, and US History. I am just wondering if this will be a tough load. If it its, which two courses would you recommend? He is a rising 11th grader. TIA
  20. For planning, I organized the first 2 quarters over the summer. During Christmas break I planned 3rd quarter and was planning on using spring break to plan the 4th quarter What do you do exactly to "Plan"? I think the planning part is what I remember being overwhelmed with. Thank you for the advice about not purchasing books that are only used for one or two weeks. Does your R student do the maps? I remember transparencies being involved with the maps. Do you use transparencies? Thanks.
  21. I can't seem to access the files. Do I need to join the group? Can you tell me what group it is? Thank you!
  22. I will be in the states this summer, so I can purchase and bring the books back myself. Thank you for the link about the shipping though! Do you do TOG in Geneva?
  23. I am trying to figure out this new board. For some reason, I somehow imbedded my comments into yours. Here it is again. I went to the Tapestry of Grace site and just put all the books into my basket. It may have been for all the subjects though. Or it may have been with all the extras. Do you do the read alouds for D level? It just seems like a lot of books. Do you check the writing for your R level? We have been doing TPS writing, and I was going to continue writing with TPS, but I am not sure if they will offer a writing course with times that are friendly for us overseas. I may have to teach the writing, but this is not my favorite subject. What do you do with writing?
