I had great success when I pulled my then sixth grader out of ps (partly due to the lack of writing instruction) using Jump In: A Workbook for Reluctant and Eager Writers by Sharon Watson. If I recall correctly, I believe it was intended for grades 6-8. I loved the style it was written in and how it was directed to the student. It laid everything out and covered exactly what I felt he needed: brainstorming, organizing your thoughts, opinion paper, persuasive essay, book report, book response, compare/contrast... Good luck!

LDS General Conference Discussion Thread
cougarmom4 replied to MamaSheep's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I haven't read very much on this thread, and only seem to have snippets of time so I haven't commented... But I wanted to tell you guys about a blog I have run into that goes over a conference talk each week. Diapersandivinity.com. Some of you might enjoy checking it out. The goal is to study one conference talk a week before the next conference and then discuss it together. (granted, I realize you may prefer discussing things here with other wtm mamas...) I will keep listening in! I do love hearing other sister's perspectives and insights. -
Why can I not get up?!

Is your CPAP data capable? Does it tell you your AHI? Is it working to lower it? Perhaps your pressure needs to be adjusted? -
In our basement, we put up a huge magnet wall. We made pieces for a marble run out of PVC pipe and connectors. It is way cool, and boys who come over here love it! I've also bought a few king-size flat sheets at a secondhand store that the kids can use in or out to build forts. A place to dig and/or play in the dirt is great...along with different props or ideas of what they could do. (like the bags of army guys). I agree with the nerf guns...we bought a bunch of cheap working goggles to keep here so we can just let them have at it. My guys love to set up targets or water balloons to try to shoot at. This spring/summer, what I'd like to do is have a bunch of PVC pipe and connectors and let the boys build outside. I've seen online different ideas of things to build with PVC pipe, and as it is relatively inexpensive, I think it might be a good neighborhood group type of activity.

My ds won a rabbit one time when we were visiting a small town's holiday festivities. Not a little bunny...but a huge rabbit. Umm...as I was asking what in the world we were going to do with it, a kind lady said they'd take it. I was relieved...but later found out they raise them to eat them. :001_huh:

I totally hear ya, Sister! I got to go to the YW Broadcast with dd12 last week for the first time and I was teary-eyed myself! I loved it!

Loved the missionary choir today! I didn't even catch Elder Archuleta though, so I'm glad you guys mentioned it! Good thing I DVR'd it...I think he is such a cutie! I think it's pretty amazing that a few years ago we went to see him as the soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and there he was...humbly singing his little heart out as a missionary. What a great example he is. We pulled out the keva planks today, and the kids built temples, Nephi's boat, and King Benjamin's tower. The kids played with playdoh at the table. We ate donuts and cheetos. :D. I bought new journals and gave the older kids to take notes in (dd12 loved it, ds14 not so much...) Tomorrow, we will do Conference Bingo and the packets the primary presidency sent home. I have a few new coloring books and puzzle to pull out. We always eat egg-salad sandwiches in between sessions on Sunday of Conference (dh and I had our first date the night before conference in the spring, I invited him over for egg-salad (which I knew he loved)...so it's our tradition.). And then we end with ice cream sundaes and talk about the conference. I love not having to go off to meetings tomorrow!

My first thought was, I'll babysit for you! And then I kept reading all of the offers! Do you live near anybody from the hive? It sounds like something my MIL would do. Seriously. She can't bear to miss anything like that.

Considering a hysterectomy...pros/cons?
cougarmom4 replied to Capt_Uhura's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had laporoscopic hysterectomy a little over a year ago. I had been having extremely heavy bleeding for a year or two. Doc was never worried, just said it was because I'd had four kids and was getting older. Well, one night, my period was insane...dh was on a campout w the scouts, I was home with kids, youngest had a fever. Anyhow, I gushed all night and when he got home at three the next afternoon, I started passing out. Trip to the ER, incompetent doctor...long story... I almost died. 7 units of blood and a d&c, they sent me home to recover. The bleeding started the next day, I went to new doc and made plans for the hysterectomy. I needed to never bleed again! My recovery from the surgery itself was quite less extensive than I had been told it might be. I had three small incisions--and was able to be up and around pretty quickly. Mostly, it has been a long road dealing with the anemia. I kept my ovaries, so no hormonal difficulties. It was a little hard for me to deal with the finality of no more babies...even though dh and I had already pretty much decided we were done, knowing it was for sure was a little emotional for me. I'd recommend the website, hystersisters...lots of info about options, experiences, etc. Having no more periods has certainly changed my life! -
Is there anyone here who...
cougarmom4 replied to Janna's topic in General Education Discussion Board
For me, it really helps to think in terms with what I can eat rather than only focusing on what I shouldn't eat. I like to think of adding in fresh fruits and vegetables...the simple plan to eat "5 a day" is a great first start. There isn't any denial involved in that...so even if she keeps eating what she's eating but ADDS the five a day, it's a step in the right direction. -

cougarmom4 replied to sweetsouthern's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My dd12 loves a newer trilogy--Tiger's Curse, Tiger's Voyage, and Tiger's something else. :-) Author is Colleen Houck. Looks like at this website you could read the first few chapters and get a feel for it: http://www.tigerscursebook.com/ -

My ds9 loves Remote control cars Keva planks with army guys Setting up targets to shoot w nerf guns Nerf battles w siblings Marble run (we made one out of PVC pipes and PVC attachment thingies) Rock collection Football cards Taking things apart...electronic things...old computers, radio, etc. He has then used some of the pieces to create cool little robot guys Would he be interested in inventing something new? Or rube Goldberg type of creations? Would he want to create his own type of football cards about astronomy related things? Like for each planet, specific moons, comets, etc. He could draw a picture or diagram, list all of the facts, color code by category or something. Then he could come up with a cool way to display them. -
Do you push reading when they're young?
cougarmom4 replied to Jen Becker's topic in General Education Discussion Board
You could try what SWB did, and tell child it was either time for a rest or a reading lesson... -
If a student does better when you do the writing
cougarmom4 replied to mom31257's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have an idea of what you might try.... You know how in writing, SWB says there are two parts of the process--figuring out what to write and physically writing it. Perhaps this carries over into math--that there are two parts to completing a problem--figuring out the answer and physically writing it down. It sounds like this student may be struggling with either keeping the numbers in his head long enough to get them down on paper or the act of actually writing the numbers themselves. For writing, SWB suggests dictation as a way to improve this part of writing, so maybe you can do dictation of numbers? Maybe I'm off my rocker, but it was just a thought that came to me and perhaps it's worth a try! -
If a child is ready, I would certainly teach him how to read before going to kindergarten. I would not hold back on this to make sure they are not 'bored' in kindergarten. In my experience with my kids, it has been SO helpful to have the foundation in place before entering ps. This is the one thing that I make sure of...a solid foundation in reading can lay the groundwork for success in school. With class sizes ever increasing in ps, you never know how much individual attention your child will get on such an individual skill...I wouldn't leave it to up to them! (my kids go to ps, I'm a homeschooler-at-heart and a public school teacher myself...)

I am the most unreasonable mom on earth..
cougarmom4 replied to KellyGirl's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It really bothers me when kids younger than 13 have facebook accounts. I'm a rule follower, too! In our family, we use available technology to teach our kids how to use it with moderation and common sense...limits, guidelines, security measures, etc. I don't think Facebook is 'evil' but most certainly can see how it can be used too much and/or in negative ways. I also tend to believe that to completely forbid something makes it more enticing. I have no problem with ds14 checking into Facebook a few minutes a day to find out what time lacrosse practice is and hearing the news that so-and-so got into the university she wanted and even joking with a buddy about the upcoming game. In some ways, it does help to keep him 'in the loop' with certain groups of friends that he doesn't see on a daily basis. Just another bit of info, my dh is an attorney and has used info from Facebook pages before in trials....all that info is fair game... -
I know it's really hard to cut back when the activities are all *good* things! But really, it seems like your dd11 needs to let one (or two) of those good things go. She's only 11. Are each of these all year long? Are any seasonal? It seems to me that if you could rotate through some of them, throughout the year you could get in everything...just not everything all at once. Other options you may want to consider: --Carpool....is there anyone you could work with to help lessen the transitions of in and out? Perhaps the preschool class? Even if you drive one day less, it would be worth it. --if you are able to arrange dd11's schedule to ride the bus and/or ride with someone, maybe instead of adding another class you could work with the school to arrange an independent study time for dd. Perhaps in the library or in another teacher's classroom, where she is somewhat supervised, but she works independently on assignments that you have given her from your homeschool curriculum. We did this a few years ago when ds went to school on half-day Fridays only....he was able to go to orchestra, PE, eat school lunch, recess and then he worked on his own work the rest of the time. It was such a great set up for us because he still felt a part of his friends, got to do the things he loved at the school, plus was able to accomplish some of the work I had planned for him. I taught him the math lesson the day before, on Fridays he completed a math assignment, vocabulary workbook, mindbenders, and a grammar lesson. So there are a few ideas to bounce around. I hope you can make things work out better so you feel less stressed. If it were me, I'd want to put more focus on the academics than on the 'electives', so I'd definitely be making changes.
