  1. Now I am surprised, hockey moms, that your kids are not in some hockey program during the summer.:) My two (1 Mite Major and 1 Squirt Major) players (one is a goalie) do something each week all summer. The Mite is taking a power skating clinic this week and does semi-private skills once a week. The goalie takes goaltending lessons once a week. Both are going to a hockey camp next week.

All of my children take figure skating lessons with a coach twice a week. We know every rink in the area and we are at the rinks year round. Sometimes it's tiring driving to different rinks, but skating and hockey are the only sports my kids want to do. They do swim lessons in the summer, but that's it. They play baseball and basketball at home but they have no interest in doing the sports as a team.

And the Odyssey holds 4 skating bags, one hockey bag, and one goalie bag better than the Suburban.

I haven't quite figured out how to fit my 2005 into the mix (he says he wants to play too.) My oldest has been taking private lessons weekly but is on break for Jr. Lifeguards. He wanted to be a goalie back in the day but we nixed that idea very quickly! :D

Any ideas for getting the stench out hockey bags/gear would be much appreciated.

  2. Practice starts tomorrow for my oldest son and we have our first tourney Labor Day Weekend! My middle son doesn't start till the end of the month but we'll have the pleasure of skating out of 2 different rinks this season...ah, I can hear the arguing now. :D

    Hope this cheers you up:

    p.s. I have a 2000 & 2003 (see below)

You Know You're a Hockey Parent If...

You base the next purchase of your new vehicle on whether it will hold

six kids, six sticks, and six hockey bags.

You know the location of every Starbucks within 400 mile radius. You

relate directions to places by the nearest arena.

You know every single kid on every single team your child has ever

played on... But you don't have a clue who his school mates are.

You feel lost when you have a free weekend.

Your spouse waits until you decide where to sit and then chooses a spot

on the opposite side of arena.

You become a partner in a skate sharpening business to save money.

You can justify complaining about someone who give hundreds of hours of

volunteer time to your son or daughter.

You ground your kids for a week (except for hockey practice).

You can rationalize spending $159.00 on a Synergy for a 9 year old but

won't spend $5.00 on a birthday card for your wife.

When someone asks how old your child is, you respond "I have a 94 and a

    96".

You have had to use a grandparent to take kid #1 to a tournament because

Dad was in a different rink with kid #2 at a tournament and Mom is with

kid #3 in a different town in another tournament all in one weekend.

You have more miles on your minivan than on a 66 Chevy.

Practices make up a very large part of your social life.

You buy gloves according to how loud you can clap in them.

You find yourself missing the parents (and manager) of your child's team mates during

    off season.

You refuse to make any plans with your friends until you check your

    kid's hockey schedule.

You take out a home loan to pay for all the equipment and expenses.

You plan the birth of your next child so he has a good hockey birthday.

Your baby's first words were Zamboni.

Your computer passwords begin with hockey or contain your child's hockey

    number.

You have been barred from more than one rink on more than one occasion.

You purchase a new $150 stick because the old one "doesn't have any goals

    left in it."

You know a few 5 year olds that are good but "lack focus".

  3. We love our pool! Being in So. California, we use it about 8-9 months out of the year. We have a slide and the kids love it. I would recommend getting the more energy efficient pool pumps that are out. They're more expensive but worth it in the long run. We had an older pump that used a ton of electricity. We decided to spend about a grand and put in the new pump and our electricity usage dropped drastically. We also have solar to heat the pool which was well worth the $$. Using the pool heater can get really expensive. We use a pool guy (to save hubby's aggravation) and he's definitely worth it.

  4. Well "meat" is essential to a good bbq! :D Burgers and hot dogs are totally overrated so I'd skip them. I'd offer one red meat and chicken. Tri-tips are fabulous on the grill along with bbq chicken.

Grilled veggies are also super easy. We usually do corn, asparagus, zucchinis, or whatever else sounds good. Finally, I usually include a cold salad and cut-up fruit. All are very easy without a lot of prep. Hope that helps...

  5. So are the Amazon movies & programs you download from Amazon stored on the Roku stored on the device until you watch them (like a DVR), or do you watch as soon as they download and then they are automatically deleted (like PayPerView), or do you stream the content and watch as it streams (like Netflix)?

Does it work the same with Hulu and other services?

I have Apple TV, which works very much like Roku (which I'm considering for another room) I downloaded a movie last night and it took almost 3 hours to finally download! There was definitely no instant watching like Netflix. I've been doing some research and it has nothing to do with my cable connection. Downloading movies just seems to take hours. I also have 30 days to watch it from the time it's downloaded and I believe I can only watch it one time. I'm not going to bother getting movies this way again.

I'm not sure if Roku has the same downloading issues but you might want to check, especially if that's an important feature for you. If you do find out, let us know. :D

  6. Have you tried Weight Watchers? I lost over 50 pounds on it and it honestly wasn't too hard. There are no crazy food ratios; just a simple balanced diet along with exercise. The nice thing about WW is that it's also fairly easy to transition into a normal diet once you've lost your desired weight. I have a friend who is a lifetime member and has maintained her weight for 15 years! I, on the other hand gave gone a little offtrack! :D

  7. Here's the easiest one I've found (and I've been using it for a couple of months now):

Get out your crockpot. Pour in half a gallon of non-ultrapasteurized milk. Cover and cook on low for 2.5 hours. Unplug for 3 hours. At that point, add in 1/2 cup plain yogurt (either purchased, or saved from the previous batch). Put the lid back on and cover with 2 towels for 4-8 hours. That's it! No temperature taking, or moving/setting it up elsewhere to incubate.

Can you expand on this please? What do you do? I have 2 gallons of whey in my fridge right now.

Yes! I just bought 3 gallons of organic milk for $2.49 each because they were almost past-date. I made yogurt with one and stuck two in the freezer. I get a gallon of yogurt (1/2 gallon of Greek style?) for $2.49. :001_smile:

I've tried the crockpot recipe twice and it's come out as liquid both times. I used 2% milk but added powdered milk as a thickening agent. Total failure both times! Do you use whole milk??

  8. Now we do have our favorites on TV. For example, I love HGTV, especially House Hunters. My husband loves Fox news. Together, we enjoy Food Network.

We just gave up cable and it is killing me because I can't watch the 3 channels you mentioned. Netflix is cool and you can find a lot of shows and movies to watch instantly. I've also found some House Hunters and Food Network shows on Hulu; it's just hit and miss.

We have Netflix streaming through our Wii and Apple TV. I wish I could get Hulu through the Apple TV but it's apparently blocked. I don't know how to get it on the TV otherwise so I'm left to watching it on the computer.

I'm intrigued by Roku but still not sure exactly what it is? Overall though, giving up cable hasn't been too bad!

  9. Funny...my husband and I were just talking about starting a juice diet this morning. How often do you juice? 3 times/day to replace normal meals. There's a local restaurant that makes an awesome green juice . It has a ton of greens but also apples and grapefruits. An all vege juice would be tough but I could easily do this one. I'm including the ingredients to get some opinions:

    grapefruit

    kale

    collards

    chard

    apple

    spinach

    blue agave

yerba mate (probably could be left out...still not sure what it is)

flax (would this give you the fiber?)

  10. IMO it is abuse to the kid who is born prior to 28 weeks to endure painful procedures in the NICU and most likely a lifetime of complications related to prematurity, when it is clear prior to conception that there is a large risk of premature birth.

Wow! So it's abuse for a woman in her late 30s or early 40s to have a child because modern medicine says they have a large risk for Downs or other complications?? What about large risks of dwarfism among little people or other

"regular" moms who know prematurity is a strong possibility in their pregnancies due to a myriad of health issues?? That equates to abuse??

  11. We are studying ancient history this year...If my son was in 4th grade, this would be perfect...But by the time we get around to this era again, he will be in 8th grade, and will probably need to read something else...

Is anyone else using these books with a 5th grader doing ancients and how?...I am trying to decide if we should read these even though they are off our schedule...We have never read these books if that helps...

We're doing the same rotation as you but I think I'm going to squeeze in the MCT books as well. You can always assign some of the Ancients books as free reading. I have to admit that I'm a little hesitant with Alice in Wonderland though...I hated both movies so I'm hoping the book is much more tolerable (fingers crossed!)

  12. Hi,

It looks like we're finally going to take our Lego fanatic children to Legoland this weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations for nearby lodging?

Any other tips for a visit to Legoland?

    Thanks so much!

    yvonne

What is your budget? There's a Sheraton within 1/2 mile and another hotel (connected to Legoland) within walking distance. The weather is good. We haven't had the typical heavy June gloom. Mornings are usually overcast but the sun has come out by lunchtime; mid 70s.

We were just there on Friday and the crowds weren't overly crazy. If you like the roller coasters, get there when they open and head right towards the bigger rides. The lines for the smaller kid rides take forever!!

  13. I've tried to use IEW a couple of times but I can't get into it. It teaches some good skills but I just can't get past the "formulatic" feel of it. Does every paragraph have an "ly" word, a strong adjective, a who/which clause?

I had planned to use a combo of WWS 4 along with WWW this next year. WWW looks very straightforward and easy to use; perfect for my reluctant writer. I was blown away however after looking at the WWS samples. WWS looks fantastic and may be all I need.

  14. We skipped SOTW 4 this year and instead focused on the American Revolution, Civil War, Industrial Revolution and a little of both World Wars. I'm going to have them listen to SOTW 4 on CD this summer and call it modern history.

My boys are still young so I figured they could delve more into modern history during the logic stage. I'm guessing that by just listening to SOTW 4 on cd, they'll learn more than most ps kids. We're heading back to Ancients when school begins again.

  15. I tend to think that a lot of time gets wasted in school and then homework gets thrown at the kids as a way to make up for all the work that didn't get done in class (while they were watching Finding Nemo for the third time in the same week, etc.) If they're going to be left to learn on their own, anyway, they might as well be at home...

:iagree: So much time is spent prepping for the all-important standardized tests that they feel they have to make up the work somewhere. I'm always amazed when friends tell me they could never homeschool but then complain how much time they spend working with their kids on homework.
