  1. The glasses do work but make sure to get a good pair that fits. At 13, the kids are checking so he'll want to see really well. :D

We were a bipolar hockey family this year; boys played at 2 different rinks. It wasn't easy but doable. Fortunately, we were able to carpool with another family for older son's practice. I definitely recommend trying to do that, if you meet family you're comfortable with. My husband and I split the remaining practices; same with the older's travel games. Both will probably play travel next season and then it will get really crazy!

  2. I don't think this is true at all and have never even seen anyone make that claim even on these boards before. After doing MUS pre-algebra, ds tested through all of Lial's BCM and passed the pre-test for Lial's Introductory Algebra. Dd who is not through MUS pre-algebra yet, tried the Lial's Introductory Algebra pre-test and had no problems with it either (we were considering switching her for Algebra).

Algebra does not cover factoring quadratic equations. As far as I know that is the only material not covered at grade level.

I won't argue that MUS is light on word problems. The honors lessons help. We supplement with LOF because it is the opposite, instruction and practice light, but full of thinking and word problems.

While MUS is considered light here on TWTM boards, all those I have talked to that did use it although way through have had success in math beyond high school. Even those going into STEM fields have found it to be adequate preparation.

We aren't done yet, so I can't speak to outcomes yet.

Ok, dumb question but where do you find the Honors questions? Are they on the website? I did a quick look and didn't see anything. My oldest is getting ready to begin Pre-Algebra so I'm definitely interesting in hearing more about the Honors...

  3. I see this as:

    Dad is the subject.

    Said is the verb.

(That) the glass is half full is a noun clause, functioning as a direct object. The word *that* is implied, or understood.

In the clause, the (art.) glass (subj) was (l.v.) half (adj.) full (PA)

Ah...I see it now. I was thinking it was a noun clause that serves as a D.O. but the indirect quote was throwing me off. If I had changed the sentence to Dad gave a half full glass, the D.O. becomes obvious. :tongue_smilie:

My son initially picked out "was" for the predicate and I couldn't figure out how to explain why it wasn't...Again, the Hive comes through!

  4. I'm ashamed to admit that this sentence has me and my boys flummoxed.

Dad said the glass was half full

"Said" is the predicate, "Dad" is the subject but I'm not sure what to do with "was half full." Off to get out my Grammar Island along with another cup of coffee in shame...:tongue_smilie:

  5. My ds is doing the following:

    MUS Beta

    WWE 1

    Explode the code

    FLL 1

    Phonic Pathways

    SWR for spelling

    SOTW 1 Ancients

    Mr Q Earth science

    Spanish

    Art @ coop

His school work usually takes about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. He's finally started to become a proficient reader so I'll slowly increase reading time.

  6. Thread Hijack Alert-

Ice time is even more precious for adult leagues around here. My husband has been playing for over 15 years in the same recreational league. He has a 9:45pm practice one a week and the games start anywhere from 8pm to 11:45pm Thurs-Sat. Yes, 11:45pm! It is insane. His teams know he doesn't play on Sunday. It usually only comes up a couple times in a season. It stinks when he is out because he is the goalie, but he always finds his own sub.

    Amber in SJ

My PeeWee son's practice starts at 8pm and will only get later as he gets older! My boys play hockey but with limited ice, there's no way around Sunday games. Our church doesn't have a Saturday or Sunday night service so we just try to do our best, even if it means going and leaving the service a little early.

    Go Ducks! :D

  7. Because its a parent friendly job. Because its a govt job. Because kid are fun and cute. Because they intend to marry someone who makes money. Because they know that despite the lower pay, its a livable wage and a safe job with good benefits and reasonably low stress environment as compared with some others.

I can think of lots of reasons to teach.

Because once you have tenure, it practically takes an act of God to get fired. Because you're usually home by 4pm. Because you get summers off and all those "staff development" days without kids...

  8. SWB makes a great point in The Well Trained Mind that kids who miss phonics instruction often will hit a wall around 4th grade when the words in their reading materials becomes significantly more difficult. They can't rely on sight words and pictures to clue them in any longer. I'm curious how the public schools deal with this especially if they use a whole language program.

  9. It depends on the app. Most of my PDF apps that I use allow me to export the doc ( a couple allow me to AirPrint but I haven't figured out how to make my printer do that ) to Dropbox, email. I then go on my regular computer and print from there. I put Dropbox on all our computers and we pass docs back and forth thru that.

Sorry, I'm not sure that answered your question. I have upad and PDF reader and notetaker and between them and Dropbox, I have no trouble printing. What are you using to view your curric on iPad?

I've just downloaded them as a PDF and opened them in IBooks. I wasn't sure how to save the pdf's but IBooks seem to do that for me. What is Dropbox?

  10. you feel that you haven't been getting enough school work accomplished:

We are just starting back today from a VERY long Christmas break.:glare:

    Just thought I would share.

I am so with you! The Christmas break along with long weekends at the beginning of the year and hockey tourneys have wreaked havoc on my school schedule. This week is our first full week back since the holidays...sigh :tongue_smilie:

  11. If your skating rink has a pro shop I would start there. At that age they are going to outgrow them really fast. Jackson are figure skates, bauer are hockey skates.

It's hard to switch back and forth so before you buy I would decide between hockey/figure skates.

:iagree: If you're looking for hockey skates, Bauer makes a Flexlite skate that is very comfortable and affordable. Some hockey skates can be extremely stiff. Can't help you with the figure skates. :D

  12. I'm totally sold on the Iphone and couldn't live without mine. My husband uses his all day for work. They do sell a charger/holder (not sure exactly what it's called) that continually charges the phone without being plugged in to give extra battery life. It makes the phone a little heavier though and is an extra purchase though.

  13. For those of you who have the Kindle Fire, you can email the answer key to your kindle email addie and then you'll have the answer key in color without having to print it.

So the Kindle Fire wouldn't allow you to do actual work on it like an IPAD? I was hoping that it would since it's so much cheaper. I'm thinking it might be worth making the investment in an IPAD if I can use it for school but it's so much more expensive...:glare:
