    Going to be new to Raleigh

    It's looking like our family is going to move to Raleigh....love to talk to any homeschool moms in the Cary/North Raleigh/WAke Forest area. My hubby's job will be in North Raleigh and I wanted to know about homeschool groups and opportunities in the area! I have some other general "area" questions if anyone is interested in answering, you can pm me.

    First time confused homeschooler

    Someone once told me - 2 samples per subject per month. That is the general rule of thumb I use to show "progress" for the state. I have not had a problem.

     

    I also type up the books we read under the general headings of each historical topic, then poetry, read-alouds, chapter "on my own" reads, etc.

     

    For ETC, I just save the "tests" at the end of each lesson. For math, I do the 2 per month and then any "tests" or review type sheet she had to do in Singapore.

    WE use Galloping the Globe as our "main" resource and supplement with much of what is mentioned here.

     

    My favorite resource has been the Kids of Courage magazines and website. (kids version of Voice of the Mayrtrs) Great downloadable guides...we just worked through the one on India as our lessons...LOVE these!

    I don't know how to quote all of the previous comments, but thank you! I figured it out when I searched by my name. It's not that I am trying to avoid being part of the community...more of a time factor.

     

    But, I only have 20 more to go :) Well, maybe 19 now...

     

    And I am laughing at some of the links you gave me. Maybe the "weird" family post isn't supposed to be funny, but some of the stuff being uncovered there is quite interesting!

    Can someone help me out here? I need 50 posts in order to sell my used curriculum. Does that include responding on someone else's threads or did I need 50 of my own original posts?

     

    I have been on here for a LONG time, but don't post a ton. So I am wondering if my responses to other folks are being counted in the tally?

    I am going to post this question here. I think it is better than where I had it on the curriculum board because it is more methodology.

     

     

    Ok, so I have spent the summer absorbed in CM books. I LOVE so much about it, but don't adhere to her lack of grammar and writing in the early years. BUT, I am not fond of pushing that either.

     

    Writing with Ease has been a nice fit and my soon to be 8 year old will begin level 2 this year.

     

    HAs anyone struggled with how that fits in with the idea of narrations, the Charlotte Mason idea? I feel like narrations let the child retell the story with the details they want, but WWE is creating a summary. I don't want to confuse my child??

     

    Anyone else done both of these? Do narrations for assigned chapter book chapters? Keep WWE separate? How do I help her understand now you are summarizing and now you are retelling everything that happened??

    Question about ETC

    Nothing "new" to add, but just in agreement. We have only needed the whole number books for now. We are in book 7.

     

    My second dd is taking a bit longer to absorb the phonics, so she might end up needing to review with half book.

     

    Often I have found that a break from ETC and a dive into something else for a bit does the trick to review without the additional workbook.

    I think I follow....

     

    In the elementary years, persist with narrations. I will probably do more oral till 3rdish grade? I will write them for her. Perhaps keep daily copywork as well for handwriting practice and some basic sentence formation, etc.

     

    Add in mini-lessons here and there? Are there times in the later elementary years that you would go through a rough draft, then editing it together - maybe focus on punctuation or adjectives, etc and then make a final copy?

     

    Then in middle school begin something like IEW or Classical Writing?

     

    How does grammar fit in your picture? Do you still (I can go back to your list) use FLL or any grammar before middle school?

    Thanks all! I am certain we will go through book 6. She is a pretty advanced reader, so we are finishing book 6 at the end of first grade. She really doesn't have any issues with it as she is reading chapter books (Little house in the big woods). I guess the debate is a spelling program or Books 7 and 8 as the spelling for the first part of second grade.

     

    Thanks! I think I will take a look at the books and compare them with some spelling programs.

    ETC...how far do you go?

    My first grader (really...second grade but missed the cutoff by 2 months) is finishing up Explode the Code level 5. She'll be able to finish level 6 by the end of this school year.

     

    We haven't started any formal spelling (as she hates writing, so I just can't see having her copy lists of words...ETC has been serving this purpose for us) But I want to begin spelling when she is done ETC.

     

    My question for ETC users - did you do all 8 books or only 6? I noticed in Sonlight that they only use the first 6. I wondered if there was a reason to stop there.

     

    She reads well. Of course, she needs more practice on "reading stamina" at this point, but the ETC are easy for her - not really "teaching" her the rules, but reinforcing.

    Thank you! That was very helpful. So many of these programs overlap, so it is hard to narrow down what is being covered. And of course, every child is different.

     

    I think I will see how she does with summarizing in WWE II. After looking at it in more detail, it is a big leap from WWE I, so I'll get a better feel for what she is doing.

     

    I have just started looking at MCT and CW. It's hard to know what overlaps and when to begin.

     

    Thanks for the information. You clearly know a lot about CW. I look forward to seeing some of these things in person at a curriculum sale this summer :) It'll probably help put some of it in perspective for me.

    I made these for Wheelers and will continue as my daughter goes along. I think I will spiral bind the volume as soon as I can print it all out.

    Thanks! I guess my main concern is that I like WWE and would like to stick with it. How does Classical Writing or IEW fit into that? Do you do it in addition or instead of WWE?

     

    My daughter will begin WWE 2 in about a month. Do I go with that or Classical Writing primer level? (if my goal is to head to CW...I just don't know what background she should have)

     

    I guess I really liked the way Classical Writing looked and I think it woudl work great for us. BUT, I don't want to redo the wheel if WWE and FLL are covering the same stuff.

     

    So, do I finish FLL and WWE level 2, then pick a level in CW? It looked like CW covered grammar too, so MCT wouldn't be needed.

     

    (MCT looks great, but a bit overwhelming to me - CW looks really well laid out and easy to follow...and my child does fine with language arts, but isn't "beyond" her grade level)
