  1. So far, so good! Had breakfast out with my BFF of 32 years at this darling little breakfast house. Eggs Benedict and many refills of coffee. Met Hubby at a diner on the freeway near his work, traded cars (I gave him his empty Honda Accord, he gave me a Sienna with 5 children), he went on to the office for a conference call with the new owner of the company, I took the kids to Costco. Now, we're home, I'm cooking up corn dogs for the kids' lunch, I'm not hungry. The afternoon - I think I'll make some applesauce and take it easy after that, since I have a raging cold.
  2. I saw that movie. I should have walked out I it. But I was young and foolish and thought I was being sophisticated watching a European movie. That was a dreadful movie.
  3. We tried A Beka spelling at first, but then switched to Spelling Workout and never looked back. We really like Spelling Workout.
  4. I've only walked out on one in my whole life. It was some weird one with Robin Williams in it. I think it was called, "What Dreams May Come" or something like that. I stayed about 10 minutes and just couldn't stand it for some reason.
  5. Casablanca Steel Magnolias While You Were Sleeping When Harry Met Sally Overboard Baby Boom
  6. I played flute first and then picked up the piccolo. I love playing the piccolo. It was like getting into a little sports car after driving around a big ol' SUV. I don't think I would have started with a piccolo.
  7. We are studying the Ancients this year and here is the list my fifth grader is reading: Hittite Warrior Gilgamesh the Hero The Golden Goblet Tales from Africa The White Stag Mara, Daughter of the Nile God King Black Ships Before Troy The Golden Fleece The Bronze Bow Caesar's Gallic War The Eagle In Search of a Homeland (the Aeneid) Theras and His Town Greek Myths Alexander the Great The Children's Homer
  8. Yeah, well, after however many Columbus Day lessons I've taught and they've sat through, it seems that the impression is that Columbus actually sailed up through the North Sea, around Scandanavia and landed somewhere in Siberia.
  9. My boys are more like this. My oldest daughter.... it's rough with her because there are some deep emotional things going on with her regarding her adoption -rejection, insecurity stuff. It's tough and she rages against me all the time. It's very painful as she desperately pulls me close and then screams at me in anger. I know these are stages she needs to go through, and it's normal. We talk about it as much as we can. And I just pray that I can be granite for her - strong, unyielding, permanent -so she can rage all she wants and I'll be strong for her. I know we can get through this, and I'm glad she's dealing with it young and openly.
  10. My kids are all adopted and my brother is adopted and some of their cousins on dh's side are adopted. So adoption is a very "normal" thing in our family. Sometimes my kids get some odd notions about biological relationships, too. It is a hard thing for them to understand. I just try to be straightforward and matter-of-fact about the whole thing. And keep explaining things over and over again. It is hard for a young mind to wrap itself around. Especially if we're talking about people they have never (and possibly will never) met. Adoption is such a beautiful thing and yet it is so hard because for some reason that biological bond is so strong, and some issues can be so painful.
  11. Woohoo, I got on and registered. Took a while, though. We're going in February.
  12. I put we are happy. Extremely happy? I'm not exactly sure what that would look like. But we are happy. We like each other, we love each other, we are committed to each other and our kids.
  13. We use Memoria Press. We love it and the kids have learned a lot. It is very systematic and straightforward. However, they do learn the Latin prayers, etc., so it may not be what you are looking for.
  14. Ok, this was just funny. I really liked..... snoutfair and "with squirrel". http://www.businessinsider.com/words-no-longer-in-the-dictionary-2013-8
  15. Well, yeah, it's rather true to the times. It's not unicorns and rainbows. It's not graphic, but... it's about the Huns.
  16. Just reporting back that we finished The White Stag and really enjoyed it. It's a pretty quick read, short book. It's basically a fairy tale. And it's a little .... different.... but both ds and I really liked it.
  17. Central Cal ladies (and gentlemen, of course) - tomorrow morning (October 8) at 9:00am you can register for homeschool days at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Just go to Homeschool programs at their website and follow the links. It's a great deal - free admission for your family.
  18. I find it to be worth it. I order a lot of stuff. I use their movies and videos a lot. Of course, they are old, but... I don't care. Keeps me entertained.
  19. No, no, no. Change the social as soon as you get the new birth certificate. That child's social security number has been in who knows how many hands. Change it! We've changed it for all our children.
  20. Whenever I can get way with it. No, that's bad. I do like church, but honestly, sometimes I just want a quiet morning alone. Regarding kids.... I wait at least 24 hours after a fever or vomiting quits. Runny nose.... it's hard around here because everyone has allergies. And those aren't contagious. I try to be on the safe side, though, and play it conservatively.
  21. Saddlemama - I just bought Fables for my 5th grader, because I really liked the look of it. Have you tried not doing the second re-write of the fable? I've been looking at it, and I think that's what I'll do. We're starting this late in the school year, but it looked good to me.
  22. Glad I could help you out, Jean! You always cheer me up with these "tackling" threads. I like 'em!
  23. Hello, All! Well, got school done this morning. I'm going to get lunch cleaned up and then head the herd out to co-op this afternoon. Hopefully, this afternoon I can get dd's birthday cake made and a bit of the house cleaned up, since the grandparents are coming over tomorrow for her birthday . I've got the never ending laundry pile to work on, and odds and ends to do. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
  24. I like this way of looking at it. I hadn't thought of it this way.
  25. I have a mouthy and argumentative 10 year old boy. The push-ups, as was recommended in a previous thread of mine have been helping.
