  1. I knew at conception. I remember being happy because the event was particularly enjoyable and sad because the timing meant a girl. DH and I had an agreement for two tries at a boy, and I'd liked being an only child. Later I said "Ouch" while removing my bra. We never even did a home test. The next day we were so certain we skipped straight to an official test.
  2. I had the same problem with the huge nasty prenatals. I also had 22-hour morning sickness, so keeping the pill down was important. I took a chewable prenatal and added in where I needed extra or the prenatal didn't have. The one I picked didn't have much Folic Acid or DHA. The folic acid pill was really tiny and therefore easy to take during my one meal a day. I got the DHA which vaguely like Nutella in ketchup-type packets. For my RLS, I need extra potassium and magnesium, so I took that as needed. Also, Iron when I was feeling... well, I've had anemia so I know the low-iron feeling.
  3. You can often find Sonlight book lots on e-bay. That would combine two of the excellent suggestions you've already received: looking at the Sonlight list and buying lots of books on ebay. They are often missing a few books that the seller just couldn't part with. But, for bang-for-your-buck I think that would be your best bet.
  4. In a book on reading (I can't remember the title, but I think many would recognize it), it included sections from the same standardized achievement test from the 60's, 80's and today. it was shocking! I showed them to my boss who has three school-aged kids and asked her to guess what grade levels they were for. 60's = 9th grade 80's = 3rd or 4th grade today = 1st or 2nd grade. They were ALL 3rd grade. Supposedly the same test. Related note, about a year ago same boss was spitting tacks about her son's English class. At the highly rated public school, which people pay a much higher property tax to live near, the 7th grade honors English class was required to read ONE assigned book for the entire year. The non-honors English class had the same book read to them in class.
  5. 4 hours doesn't seem that long. More cushion for problems.
  6. Or it could be there is a genuine problem with your kids. It all depends on the definition of low percentile. Doctors said <3% was a problem. It irritated me when people would say to me, "Oh, don't worry. So-So was very short and he turned out fine." I'd ask what percentile was very short, they'd say something like 20%. I'd say, "We'd throw a party if DD ever hit 20%." She isn't even on the growth chart. It didn't help that I was resistant to the failure-to-thrive tests and felt like a bad mother. But, they found a genuine, treatable problem. DH and I were just talking a few hours ago about some athlete that wasn't diagnosed until he was 11, which is almost too late. I guess it is like learning problems. Sometimes someone is a late bloomer, something there is a problem.
  7. Some airlines REQUIRE you to pay extra for an escort. I seem to remember reading that United the age is 15 now. I think that is silly. Also, I forget who I talked to, but if you arrange it ahead of time, you can meet someone at the gate. I did that once for my mother (post9/11). Your names gets put on a list.
  8. I've heard of retirees making this a sidejob. I think the one I knew had an auto-recording device on their phone.
  9. I thought of another one. Scuba diving with sharks around. The bear one made me think of it. I never had to stop but I was told once I shouldn't go on a certain dive if I was, and I wasn't.
  10. You can also keep an eye out for the next nearby Shakespeare in the Park and have her read a kids version beforehand. Then go to the play.
  11. I went camping once on a heavy day and it was pretty horrible. We weren't even remote camping. But, it was for DD's scout troop,
  12. One of the things that has expanded my audiobook listening is a speaker for the mp3 player. It cost about $20 and be charged with a mini USB cable. I really don't like to wear headphones for long time periods. But, the little speaker I can carry around the house while cleaning. Silence really drives me nuts.
  13. Wow! One of DD's friends can't play anymore on weekdays because she started K. They get out at 3:30 pm, but don't get home until closer to 4:30 pm. She comes home and goes into her room Alone to decompress. Then comes out for dinner. Then back to her room to be alone and do homework. She's peopled out out by just a normal full day.
  14. If public school was so fabulous at socialization and making friends, then your boys would still have friends from when they were in school. Maybe not the youngest but definitely the oldest.
  15. That is how my husband learned to read, and my personal opinion is that this is the ideal method. DH's sister had infinite patience because she really couldn't care less if he learned to read. It was about playing school. It started when he was a baby and she'd prop towels around him because he couldn't sit upright yet. He was still a better student then her dolls. The only problem came later. DH's sister is lazy, and she had DH read out-loud her assigned reading. There is a large age gap so he was reading high school assigned reading in first grade. He still hates to read out loud. He is an excellent reader though.
  16. I was a precocious reader, and it has hindered me since I never learned phonics. They taught a little phonics at my early elementary but only to kids who couldn't read. If I've heard the word before but never seen it, I've absorbed enough phonics to match it up and come out with the right word. But, brand-new words? My pronunciation makes people laugh. I have been banned from reading Jungle Book because DH can't stop laughing at me. I was really into myths as a kid, but I can't discuss it because my pronunciation of the gods makes me look like an idiot. I am extremely anti-sight words.
  17. I read a lot of books, but I don't consider that a big deal. Since New Year's I've read a Dean Koontz,"Door to December", two recent Star Trek's, two John Grisham's including one on Football, which is weird since I hate football. Currently working on Little Women ( I just found the Mp3 that had it loaded. This is for during housework), Killing Reagan in the car (not impressed), TWEM in the bathroom (impressed), 1493 on the computer for while doing puzzles (just started) and both another Star Trek and a book on the times of Henry VIII by my bed. I can't fall asleep to Non-fiction, but I have a hard time falling asleep without fiction, so I usually have both my the bed. It is nice being able to read faster. I can comfortably read ~ 1000 words per minute without comprehension loss. ~ 1400 if I push it, but then it becomes work. I get literally twitchy if I don't have an audiobook.
  18. Have you looked into DevaCurl? I use that on myself, and I've been using the same on my daughter. Her hair is extremely healthy and I know when I switched to DevaCurl my natural curls started to stay on their own.
  19. I just wanted to comment on the first sentence. I have found that professors will answer sincere questions from anyone that emails them. They love to talk about their area of expertise and unlike with questions from students they know I'm not brown-nosing.
  20. That was my experience too. It also meant that when there was another kid into reading in the classroom we could find each other and bond over books. The teacher knew we already knew "the b says /b/" and as long as we didn't cause trouble we could do our own thing.
  21. It is smart to do it this way too. So many upper level classes required from my degree required a class that required a class that required another class, that required a class... If you didn't get started on the path early you'd be unable to take all the needed classes your senior year. I think they steer freshman to the general ed stuff because they figure the student doesn't know what they want.
  22. I am just now reading TWEM, and our fearless leader seems to agree with that. In the beginning she talks about going back to school as an adult and somewhere in there she says something like, "You don't have to go to a school and spend all that money. People have been studying great books and learning independently or with a friend for a long time" Then, she guides people on how to do that.
  23. Capital One isn't that bad. It does have a yearly fee and a high interest rate. It is sort of a blend of a secured card and a credit card. We stopped using credit cards a few years ago. But, I really don't like using a debit card for everything because if it were stolen it could be disastrous, i.e. checks bouncing. So, I just recently researched and settled on the Capital One. We plan on using it like a debit card that happens to have credit card protections and bonus features like rental car insurance. I'm not tickled about the yearly fee.
  24. DH is still doing work on our house after we bought it and he gutted it. I just bought both books.
  25. Yep, I was going alone to Six Flags starting about 11. I had a Season Pass and mom would drop me off on her way to work, and pick me up at X time on her way home. She didn't work near there. It started out as I'd meet a friend there and we'd meet at X ride. Then one time I was there with a new friend and we couldn't get seats to a show next to each other. but instead we were one behind the other. She left in a snit saying she'd be on the Y ride. She wasn't, so I just stayed and rode rides and was at the front gate at the appointed time. Friend had called her parents to pick her up early saying we'd gotten separated. Friend's parents called my parents saying to expect a call from me. They were happy and a little smug to see me at the gate at the appointed time.
