  1. I was taught in public school and went from traditional block style letters to cursive. I remember hating cursive even though I was proficient at it and had nice penmenship. To me it was always slow and laborious. I was so relieved when we were *allowed* to go back to block letters in high school. I rarely use cursive now... and it shows! How important is cursive in todays world? Will it impact my childs life in any way if I don't teach cursive? What about italics, does anyone use/like this? I saw it for the first time yesterday. Makes a bit more sense to me, more fluid and easy to read. What did you decide to use?
  2. Okay, I can't believe I'm admitting this! :blushing: But I have been known to fidget when I'm learning too! Drives my husband batty. Now, not like my 5 yo... who btw sounds exactly like yours. I laugh at him when dh is teaching him because he will try to sit so still but something has to move or he will just plain fall off the chair! For me, I will do some kind of motion with my fingers or I don't know some kind of movement. But! Interestingly enough, I catch onto something faster that way. My dh thinks I'm not listening but I'm totally present and have all concentration on what he's saying. Can even usually give his words back to him verbatim. And yes, I have a somewhat busy, you could say, personality too! I'm not hyper, can sit still but I just move always in high gear. Even my thinking! Anyway for my ds, if I'm trying to get some measure of stillness from him I usually hand him a toy to hold and work with in his hands. Keeps the rest of him still to be moving his hands. Or a crayon and paper to do squiggles on.
  3. Specifically math. I keep second guessing myself and I guess I will until the curriculum gets here! I used OM with my oldest dd when she was in third grade and we both loved it! She still talks fondly of it :) But I was afraid at the time it was too slow for her, she had been doing something vastly different before. Anyway, fast forward now I have ds in K and dd in 2nd and going to do OM with both of them. They are so artsy and love nature and hands on, sounds perfect for them. I'm worried about the math though. Do you find the need to suppliment? If you do, what do you use? I remember it taking up a bit of time with my dd before too and often just wished for a math consumable. Or should I take a deep breath and just use the OM for a couple months and see how it works? Thoughts? My alternative curriculum would have been FIAR (could have done it with both of them together, much easier) Mcruffy Math and Hooked on Phonics. I sure hope I made the right choice! I have to keep fighting the urge to buy both sets of curriculum!
  4. btw/ have you felt the need to suppliment the math or any other part of the curriculum?
  5. Helps immensely! Thanks so much for your response :001_smile:
  6. Hello! I'm new here, just been busy reading the wealth of info offered here! I have a question as I'm sourcing out some oak meadow circ. I want the more current syllabus that is slightly more school like ( so I've heard). What year am I looking for? I would like to fine k and 2nd grade. The one k I found for a good price has a syllabus 2001 and the supp. Books are from 2005. Will these work together? Sorry so abreviated, I'm on my cell....how on earth do people function on these things! It's making me nuts, lol. Thanks for any help! Michelle
