  1. Went outside yesterday and found evidence of hornworms on two tomato plants. I couldn't find the suckers, so I went back out as soon as it was dark with my blacklight. I found them right away. One on each plant. They were huge! icky. I got them, though. I suppose I'll go out again tonight. I am really enjoying having fresh lettuce from the Aerogardens. The Merlot variety does really well in hydroponics. Better than buttercrunch. I have a variety of turnips (grown for the greens--no big roots) in my diy hydro set up, and they are doing well, too. Love, love, love! Tomatoes are gradually getting tastier, so I am optimistic. I got my Azomite, so I should probably try to work some of that in before it rains today. 🙂
  2. Is it possible this could be shingles?
  3. I have had my LG washtower for a little over a year, and I love it. It cleans very well. I hate to hear the negative reports about LG appliances. I have an LG refrigerator that is several years old. No issues. It has been flawless. And I just ordered an LG induction range to be delivered next week! We got it from Costco, so we have an extra year warranty. And I may purchase and extended warranty. Consumer Reports lists LG #1 in owner satisfaction and #2 in predicted reliability. We shall see, I guess! I don't really put much stock in CR ratings anymore, but I do always check with them. LG and Bosch are tops in both categories. Interestingly, Electrolux is way down the list for both owner satisfaction and reliability.
  4. I'm glad you started this. I had been wondering about the other thread, too.
  5. My appetite gets really wonky this time of year with the heat. I don't eat much meat. I've been diligent about making whole wheat sourdough, and that is what I am surviving off of many days. That and pasta. Cheese toast, tomato sandwiches--sometimes with bacon. Bacon is the only meat that really sounds appetizing at the moment, and I'm sure it's the salt. I salt my spaghetti sauce like crazy, too. Last night I made a dish that is just egg noodles and cabbage seasoned with onion, bacon, a little garlic, salt and pepper. It's a family fave here. If my starter cooperates today, I am going to make pizza crust dough. It won't be ready for tonight though, so I need to come up with something else. For treats... I got out my little Cuisinart ice cream maker, and I've been experimenting with custard--how many eggs, sous vide vs stovetop, etc. We made banana milkshakes one night. And one night I made cinnamon ice cream. My fam says it takes like a snickerdoodle. 🙂 I'm getting a decent amount of tomatoes in my garden-- some Amish paste, too, so I may make a tomato sauce. I'm using this recipe as a guide although I have to scale it back. I'm really intrigued at the idea of making my own tomato paste.
  6. I didn’t read the comments… hold on…Hulu is $70 a month??? When did this happen? I’m sure as heck not paying that much for Hulu. eta: I double checked. We pay $14.99 for Hulu which is an upgrade I think.
  7. We love and use Chomchom rollers here, too! Definitely another Prime Day worthwhile purchase if they’re on sale. I have experienced the pet fur weaving into my upholstery. Human hair, too, actually. I have found that our basic IKEA Ektorp upholstery is the most fur/hair resistant. Bonus that the cats don’t seem to want to use it as a scratching post! One day maybe I’ll have nicer stuff. Nah…I’d rather have cats and dogs. 🙂
  8. I have no less than 4 Eufy robovacs for this reason. There’s your Prime Day recommendation! 😉 We have 2 dogs and 3 cats. But we have adult children who regularly visit with Cardigan Corgis, German Shepherds, chihuahuas, etc. Its a battle. The Eufy vacs make a huge difference if I run them daily or at least every other day. It keeps the stray hairs from floating around and landing on furniture, etc. I’m a believer in robovacs. The more the merrier. I am satisfied with the 4 we currently own, but I wouldn’t be opposed to adding one more. Because we are an extremely pet friendly household due to fostering and all of that, we have done away with almost all carpeting. Even area rugs. It just so simplifies running the eufys. My floors have never been cleaner! clarification: I regularly run 2 Eufy vacs most days followed by running one Eufy vac/mop combo. The fourth one is only for our upstairs bedrooms. So that’s 3 robovacs for 1700-1800 sq ft downstairs, but it’s not overkill imo. Priceless.
  9. I have never really needed to replace a lampshade. My oldest lamp—floor lamp—is one I bought at Tuesday Morning (RIP) 30 years ago right after I got married. I still adore that lamp. I replaced the shade a couple of years ago just on a whim, but I kept the original shade because it’s nice and good quality.
  10. I feel this in my bones. Thank you. When it has become dire, I have used a damp cloth to wipe them down. This reminds me of a dear friend… We both worked at times for our church in different ways. I was a janitor for about a year. She would help out if deep cleaning was needed. One of my duties was making sure the blinds were dusted/cleaned. This was on top of already overwhelming amount of mopping, bathrooms, etc. It was too much for one person. I asked my friend, “how often do you clean your blinds at home???” I was so relieved when she said, “I don’t!!” 😂 We both agreed that we would just replace them if they got that bad off! I quit that position, and they replaced me with 2 kids half my age. And they couldn’t even keep up! I felt vindicated lol. Those kindergarteners don’t care if there’s dust on the blinds! or the lampshades!
  11. Alright, if I’m forced to drink bottled water, I really do like Aquafina!! Otherwise absolutely accurate on the Dasani.
  12. Also...Would your husband be okay with living apart here in the US? I know all families are different, but my dh would be miserable. We spent 6 months apart due to a job change, and he was absolutely miserable the entire time. He does NOT like to be alone.
  13. Personally, I would not move back to the US solely to be near an adult child at college. My kids lived a 2 hour drive away when undergrads, and they really only came home for major holidays. They threw themselves into the university experience and never looked back! As far as emergencies, we have had a few. Undergrads are shockingly good at taking care of their friends when something happens. A couple of my kids have had to be taken to the ER, and they have had to call an ambulance for a friend once. eta: about putting down roots... I personally think that's overrated. I mean...dh and I have lived in the same general area for most of our lives, but we don't feel like we have that idyllic roots thing. It sounds lovely. I'm sure some people experience it positively and thrive. But there are zero guarantees that you will be able to "put down roots" where ever you end up moving in the US. I wouldn't move here for ((that)). In my mind "roots" are not geographic. 🙂 I have a niece and 2 nephews who spent their entire childhood/youth in Kenya. They are so grateful to have grown up there. They came back to the US (alone) for college/career, and have zero regrets over spending their youth in Africa.
  14. I need to do a soil test. These are new beds I made this year. I didn't want to keep planting the same stuff in the same beds. I filled the bottom with leaves and partially composted grass clippings. Then on top I put the recipe for "Mel's Mix", so I thought I'd be okay. I'm wondering if all the the partially composted leaves and grass are eating up all the nitrogen as they decompose. idk, everything is growing like crazy though--lush and green. I have recently added bone meal, Tomato Tone, and a bunch of Neptune's Harvest fish emulsion that I applied much stronger than recommended because it rains every single day lately. I put this on everything except my beans and okra. There's still a lot of season left for my maters and peppers, so fingers crossed...
  15. I'm kinda missing having HGTV now. lol I used to go on a girls trip with a friend every summer, and it was the highlight to stay somewhere with cable so we could binge watch HGTV. It doesn't make me dissatisfied with my own home, but I do feel the pressure to think about resale every time we paint a room or replace flooring. Our whole house was a disaster in foreclosure when we bought it, so we have had to do so much work to it over the years. The waste really bothers me. I often see people on FB marketplace who are selling entire kitchens that are about to be demo'ed. Selling the "old, no longer in style" custom cabinets, granite countertops, stainless appliances... It's a bit nauseating. But at least they are recycling it!
  16. You will love the Corolla. Very good car. I am also in the camp of wanting no frills. Well, I do like having bluetooth and a backup camera. I don't consider a backup camera to be a frill since it saves babies from being backed over. I do not enjoy driving my husband's 2020 Subaru because the thing wants to steer itself! There are so many annoying things about all the new frills. I am dreading the day I have to buy something newer. I have a 2012 base Highlander, and I hope I can drive it many more years.
  17. I just ordered some azomite. My soil is lacking--something. My tomatoes are mealy. That has been very disappointing.
  18. Are there any alternatives? My oven died several weeks ago, and I bought a Whynter Countertop Combi/Steam Oven to get by until I can get a new range. I guess there aren't many people in the world who own one because I cannot find any other users on FB, Reddit, etc. Those few other souls out there who own this thing were probably on Chowhound. 🥲 There is a bit of a learning curve with this thing. I guess I'm on my own with this one!
  19. @Faith-manorthats a LOT of tomatoes!! I’m really impressed because I planted Amish paste, too, but I won’t have nearly that many. And yours may ripen before mine! Maybe I need to move a little further north. 😉
  20. I planted Dragon’s Tongue late, but they are getting there! Very tasty beans! This is my first year growing zinnias. They are kinda puny looking. Should I cut them?
  21. The biggest one is over 13 ounces. 💕💕💕
  22. You can pickle pretty much anything...okra, onions, pig's feet...
  23. pouring here, too. Storms every afternoon lately.
