  1. We've started with MEP math, to be honest, mostly because it is free. I've been researching more and wondering if another curriculum might be a better compliment. I'm drawn to Singapore math, but I'm still not sure...
  2. Do you restrict your little one's access to technology? I'm thinking about smartphones, iPads, tablets, apps, games, etc... If you do what is your reasoning? Do you have an age at which you increase access? Also, if you utilize technology how do you use it? What bounderies do you enforce? I'm considering a purchase on the line of a kindle fire for Christmas for my 5 & 6 year olds. I'm just on the fence.
  3. I signed up at homeschoolsked.com & it really is awesome. I have found however, that I really don't need anything that in-depth. I printed out some worksheets & just move completed ones to the back of the folder. Online work I just have bookmarked the sites we use & put the shortcuts in a folder on the desktop of our laptop.
  4. Welcome! I'm a newbie too, so no advice, but I will be watching this thread!
  5. I can't imagine how frustrating this would be. I'm not thrilled with my kids' school, but to be afraid of violence in the classroom??? Good luck to you...
  6. Yes, I feel like I don't really know what goes on day to day in my kids' classrooms. :iagree:
  7. We're all here for a reason right? We think our local schools have something to offer, but we feel like we have to enrich the offerings! So what is your child's school best at? And what shortcomings made you feel the need to after school? We are early in the year in a new district, so I'm working from just a little bit of evidence. I'm impressed that my kids' school had an after school book club for each grade. I love the idea of moving learning outside the classroom & my kids are super excited about it. I hope to see more of the same thing. This school is terrible at communication and relationship building (both with kids and parents). My daughter & I both felt a personal connection with her K teacher last year. I am no expert in elementary education, but it seems like a child would learn more effectively if they respected their teacher & wanted to please. This year my kids have no particular dislike of their teachers, but no particular connection either. The same goes for me. Last year I felt welcomed by my dd's K teacher...this year I feel nothing. Just "these are the procedures we will be following to educate your child, please comply". Interested to hear from others!
  8. How do you keep track of your progress? Right now, to begin, I am using many free online sources that do not contain unlimited material. I think I will need to keep a log of what resources we've used so when the time comes I can find or buy another source. So how do you log progress??
  9. Thanks all! I have researched some free curriculum resources and we are diving in Monday! I can be quite the over-planner, so I'm trying to let go of that and start giving it a shot--we can adjust our focus and or schedule as we move forward! I'm anxious for our first parent teacher conferences. I will discuss my gifted child's needs then--and I don't anticipate a lot of support. She actively discourages working ahead. I'm trying hard to keep a positive additude with the school. It's not going to help anything if I make assumptions about them not being supportive!
  10. Hello! I am a mom to three and step mom to two. I work full time and my school-agers are in K and 1st. I kind of accidentally discovered the concept of afterschooling! Last year my now 1st grader was identified as gifted. The letter that was sent home was very to the point--our district is required to identify gifted students but they are not provided with enough funding to accommodate the needs of all the gifted students in the district. I mean really...I could almost hear the frustration in their message! Congrats! You have a gifted child--we will most likely be able to do nothing about it. At that time we were attending a school outside our home district through open enrollment. I came to learn after a little research, that when it came to any special programs (title 1, TAG) open enrollment kids can only access the programs after all the in-district kids have spots. So it was basically a foregone conclusion that we would not have access to the TAG program. I have moved my kiddos into our home district--which is rated lower than the former one we were in, but where, when the time comes, she will have access to the TAG program. Of course TAG doesn't start until 3rd or 4th grade--to allow sufficient time to hammer my bright child into a mediocre mold (whoops, did I let my chagrin show? :)). I have been less than impressed with both of my kids teachers this year. I have been feeling more and more that if I don't supplement, build on and give my kids a way to work ahead of their classroom work that they will be destine to never excel...the school system seems set on squashing any student who does not fit neatly into the middle. I started googling "supplementing public education at home" and came across the concept of afterschooling. Wow!! It seems I'm not the only mama not in a position to homeschool full time, but who feels the need to offer more to my kids. I'm so excited to learn more about how to make this work from some seasoned parents!!
