  1. Yes, I’d like to do it in one year. Of course, if it’s too much for him then we will slow down.
  2. I know some people have done that but I'm having trouble finding posts about it. I'm planning on doing it this year with one of my 6th graders and I'd love to hear exactly how you did it and how it went. He's very good at math and I don't think he will have any problems.
  3. Bumping to see if anyone has any thoughts ?
  4. I'm so excited to use it this year (6th grade). With FLL I think we did it 3, maybe sometimes 4 times a week, and had no problems getting through the whole book. Is GWTM supposed to be done 4 days a week? We have a co op one day so we do our own school 4 days a week, but as I'm making out lessons plans, I don't see how we are gong to get through the book. It looks like some of the weeks are review only, and some of them look like they could take a whole week to do for sure. We do school mid-Aug through mid-May with things like Christmas and Spring break, etc. Any tips on how to get through this in a year? I see the book says it's ok if you don't get through it all, especially in the first year, but I'd prefer to if we can!
  5. Thanks, everyone! I'm glad to hear this. It did seem like so much reading, every day! We only school 4 days a week too and with everything else, I think it would have been too much. Two years it is!
  6. I'm sitting down trying to plan our 2018/19 6th grade year. We will be doing Uncle Sam and You this year and as I'm looking at it, I'm wondering if people often stretch it into 2 years. I guess it's just supposed to be one year, done every day. It just kind of looks like a lot! But maybe by 6th grade they should be expected to do more work!
  7. Oops, yes - I edited it. Thank you! Take it slow sounds great to me!
  8. This is our first year using this and we'll be doing level 6 for my 6th graders. There are only 16 lessons. Do most people go through 2 books a year? Or do you just stretch the lessons? Thanks for any advice! Edited to correct the name of the curriculum!
  9. If my kids are going to be 6th graders next year, should we get book A, which I think I heard was intended for 4th graders? Or the one for 6th graders? Do they build on each other? ETA - Nevermind. I live chatted with Rainbow resource and they said to do book 6 for 6th grade and book A was next. Do I need the answer key?
  10. You are ALWAYS so full of wonderful advice! Just wanted you to know that I appreciate your posts and replies!
  11. We plan to use Uncle Sam and You for 6th grade next year.
  12. We will be doing middle school next year and I go back and forth as to whether we will homeschool for high school or not. We probably won't decide for sure until 8th grade! So it's hard to think about a long term plan. Right now I'm thinking about writing. I really like Writing and Rhetoric but I love the idea of hopefully doing the whole series. If they go to high school, then we wouldn't do that. Then I started wondering if maybe there's a better curriculum we should be doing with the thought of public high school in mind. So my question is, is there? What would you do if you knew you'd send your kids to high school and wanted them well prepared? Or... would you just keep doing what is working NOW since you don't know for sure if they'll go to high school?
  13. There seem to be a lot of different ways to use Wordly Wise. What does everyone like? Trying to see what would work best for us next year... 3 6th graders. I do like the idea of it being on the computer. Thanks! I'm trying to look at their site but it's overwhelming!
  14. Thanks, everyone! Those are awesome suggestions. OMG that is a GREAT idea. They are triplets so they were born great arguers. LOL. I have actually told them many times that I want to find a debate club for them with how much arguing they do!
  15. We do Veritas Press Self Paced History and we love it. And last year we did a study on our state, just because I think most 4th graders do... But today when one of my 11 year olds said, "What is the constitution?" I realized that I have clearly failed somewhere! Though now that I'm typing this out I'm wondering if it's more like government we need. I don't know... I'm just feeling like even though I like going through history chronologically, I feel like we need to throw some basic US info in there. I'm not looking for a huge major curriculum. Is there anything just open and go? Simple? 6th grade level...
  16. I just discovered MEMS from these forums. There's not a ton of talk about it but what there is sounds really positive. I'm pretty sure I will use book 1 of MEMS for my girls for their 6th grade year. I think we can get through a lot of it quickly, as it will be a lot of review, and hopefully be able to start book 2 next year as well. (They'll complete CLE 5th grade this year). I feel like MEMS will be really good for them. They could use the confidence boost of some familiar review, and it's supposed to just be 20 minutes a day, which is great, as CLE takes them almost an hour. I also love how there are instructional videos for each lesson online, and they're free. My plan for my son was to finish CLE 6 this year and then have him condense CLE 7/8 both next year for his 6th grade year. But now MEMS is just really appealing to me. I wonder if I should just get their pre-algebra book?
  17. Oh man, I wasn't even thinking about the hurricane :( We are coming from Missouri, so while Alabama is a tad farther, I wonder if it may be a better option? To answer some questions - our main purpose is just chilling on a beach, but other activities would be fun too. We are going April 5-8, so just a short trip. Thanks for all of the advice so far! Anyone know much about Gulf Shore Alabama? Or if any beaches would still be ok for sure from hurricane damages?
  18. We're wanting to take a little beach vacation. TX is the closest from where we are so I'm trying to research beaches. Anyone have any suggestions? It will be me, my mom, a friend, and 4 girls. Ideally we'd love to find a VRBO so close to a beach so we could just walk. I've been trying to research but it's hard to tell which homes are that close to the beach....
  19. Oh! I searched and that didn't come up. Thank you!
  20. I always like seeing what other people are doing! I'd also love to hear if people think anything is missing from my list. Here's what I have so far: History: Veritas Press self paced history - Explorers to 1815 Civics: Uncle Sam and Me Spelling: All About Spelling -finish level 6 and start level 7 Writing: Writing and Rhetoric book 5 -Refutation and Confirmation, book 6 - Commonplace Science: Science in theScientific Revolution Math: Pretty sure I will have my son do both CLE 7 and 8 for 6th grade. The girls will most likely stick with CLE and do level 6... though I'm also thinking about Mastering Essential Math Skills for them. *I decided to do MEMS. Fingers crossed! Foreign language: Considering we ARE stopping Latin and starting Spanish. We have loved GSWL so we will do Getting Started with Spanish. Grammar: I'm not sure. We have taken this 5th grade year off of formal grammar after 4 years of FLL. We used an Evan Moor work book, which has been good for just keeping up on things, and I feel like GSWL has been wonderful for grammar and I think Spanish will be the same way. So, what about no formal grammar again for 6th grade?? Decided to do Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind. Excited! Word study: Vocabulary from Classical Roots book 6 Logic: Fallacy Detective We'll also read a lot. We don't really do anything formal with the books we read. Just talk about them. Sometimes I look up questions to ask them. Our extra activities include AWANA, Sunday school, lots of sports, piano/strings, a co op that includes art, music, PE, science, computers, and Spanish, another co op that we can take anything that happens to be offered and can range from things like art to science classes and anything in between.
  21. I know it's not great to jump around with math curriculum, and we're doing "ok" with CLE. I really like it, but my two 5th grade girls aren't "naturally mathy" so I was wondering if anyone had any experience leaving CLE and going to something else that might help the girls just "get it" a little better. But hopefully still something that's not too hard to teach. I like CLE because it's taught pretty much the way I learned. But I am open to drying something that might put things a little differently. I guess worry about gaps with switching curriculum...
  22. I also just remembered that you can do e-courses through our public high school and algebra is one of the courses. Would that be a good option?
  23. Ok, she's only in 5th grade and her mind will change :coolgleamA: but she says she wants to be a surgeon when she grows up and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations of a science curriculum or even just a cool book that would be interesting for her.
