  1. I downloaded and saved all the lessons just in case they're removed from the site by the time I'm ready for them!
  2. I don't know whether or not any of these will be helpful to you, but all of these are free resources: http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/readers_guides/hobbit/ http://www.hmhbooks.com/features/lordoftheringstrilogy/lessons/index.jsp (Scroll down to "Course Outline" to see which units deal with The Hobbit.) http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/monkeynotes/pmHobbit02.asp http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/hobbit/ http://www.gradesaver.com/the-hobbit/ http://www.cliffsnotes.com/study_guide/literature/hobbit.html http://www.nt.net/~torino/hobbit.html My library also has a teaching guide available to check out. There's over a month wait on it right now, but I have it on hold. You might want to check your library to see what's available.
  3. Check your library, too. I just put it on hold at my library (it's currently checked out).
  4. Amy, I'm so sorry about your miscarriages. I've been there, so I know how much it hurts. (I was only able to have one child.) I hope you get answers and are feeling better soon. This is how my sister feels as well. She is now having issues with her pituitary (it has shrunk), and her doctor thinks it was caused by the RAI. I totally agree about staying gluten-free. I never felt well on thyroid meds. In fact, I was allergic to some of the ingredients, so it's no wonder. Regardless, after a decade of being on meds (and having problems for at least a decade before starting on meds), my thyroid levels are now normal. I changed my diet (I went gluten-free, soy-free, and yeast-free), and I avoid synthetic chemicals as much as possible. Based on my own experience and that of the many people in my family with autoimmune thyroid disease (both Hashimoto's and Graves'), as well as a number of friends, I think that the meds themselves do further damage to the body. I wish I had known all that I know now many years ago when I still had a chance of having another baby. (I was on thyroid meds when I had my miscarriages.)
  5. You people aren't good for me. ;) I just bought Aeneid, Iliad, and Odyssey!
  6. I'm sorry to hear about your parents. I know that can be tough (I lost my mother a few weeks ago and my father when I was a child). I'm glad the school year went relatively well, though, and I'm glad you're back.
  7. I would say that there is definitely mental illness in The Glass Castle, as well as addiction (alcoholism). Also, don't forget that in addition to neglect, there is a scene about sexual abuse. I think I feel for Maureen the most because she was the youngest and essentially had no one to lean on as the others did, which is likely why she ended up being the one with mental issues as an adult.
  8. I agree completely. I have found that most 8th graders and especially younger kids simply aren't ready for it. We read it in high school and enjoyed it immensely. Even more important, though, we understood it.
  9. We used LL7 last year and used different editions with no problem at all.
  10. I bought that set on CDs years ago (long before I really thought about homeschooling). It really is an awesome set.
  11. The full title of The Color of Water is The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. It is an excellent book. Here is the book description on Amazon:
  12. I looked at the preview lesson today, and I was impressed. I'm going to try to do the course before the end of the summer so that I can see whether or not my son will be ready for it in the fall (he'll be an 8th grader).
  13. I'm sorry; I'm just now seeing this. I take Renew Life Ultimate Flora Critical Care, 50 billion. I get mine from a health food store instead of ordering them online, though.
  14. Amy, are you able to access the videos? If so, then it's fine to use them. I have an account to use the streaming for free, but I live in Georgia. I think there is a way to pay a subscription fee if you don't live in Georgia, but paying for one DVD, if that's the way it's done, sounds like a cheaper route to go.
  15. I do want to add one thing that I do think has changed: Even compared to 20-something years ago when I first started teaching, parents are now far more likely to defend their kids with bad behavior and to never admit that their kids ever do anything wrong.
  16. I'm Judy. I have one son, who is 13. My son has been homeschooled from the beginning. The main reasons I initially chose to homeschool him were because he has multiple life-threatening food allergies, and he was also quite hyperactive when he was young (changing his diet helped with the latter). As time passed, though, I became even more adamant about homeschooling. I liked being able to control his academics and to have flexibility. Then I returned to teaching for the last six months of the school year 2007-2008. That experience confirmed for me that I didn't want my son in the schools here. I don't blame the teachers (things are beyond their control), but the academics are lacking, and the kids have no motivation and are out of control. All that matters are test scores, and if it's not on "the test," it isn't taught. One of the assistant principals actually said, "I don't know why so many of you teachers are complaining about having to teach to the test. It's a good test; why not teach to it?"
