  1. Odd man out here. We used all of Singapore 6A/B with DS1 and much of it as supplement with DS2 who was using MUS as his spine math. We liked 6A/B; we saw it as focus / practice and going deeper with problem-solving, with introduction of some new types of word problems. While we also liked 5A/B (exposure to interesting/unusual topics, such as tessalations), we thought of it as being "lite".

However, we had copyright early 2000 U.S. editions (just textbook and student workbook -- no Teacher Guide, CW, or HIG available at that time), so the Singapore levels may have changed quite a bit by now...

This describes us. Also, I taught middle school math for years (and high school math one year), so I had no problem understanding the material. We went from 6B to Dolciani Pre-algebra.

  2. When I am finally done with caring for my dying father, I plan on doing a few Coursera courses, beefing up (and, ahem, actually watching/listening to) my TC collection, probably getting around to reading Charlotte Mason's words rather than someone's interpretation of her ideas, possibly actually learning Algebra even though I always made As in my math classes, and finding good resources about being a good teacher. My oldest will be in 8th grade. I really need to buckle down and focus this year. I want to give all my kids the best of myself, so I'm hoping to really improve my knowledge base and teaching skills.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father.

  3. After reading Wheat Belly and Ultra Mind Solution, I decided to give up gluten for 6 weeks. I felt mentally sharper. When I added it back in, I got noticeably more forgetful. I am now gluten-free at home. I try to be gluten-free when I eat away from home, but I don't make myself (too) crazy about it. While I am far from photographic memory land, my memory has definitely improved.

My mother passed away at age 87 after suffering with dementia for 5 years. :crying:

I haven't read either of those books, but I've read a lot of other books, websites, and studies about gluten. I'm now gluten-, yeast-, and soy-free, and pretty much free of all food additives like preservatives, food dyes, and flavor enhancers. Since changing my diet, my health has improved tremendously. Not only is my mind sharper, but my mental and physical health are better as well. I'm less prone to depression and emotional outbursts (my husband and son even noticed the difference), and I no longer have symptoms of fibromyalgia or arthritis (unless I'm around fragrances), IBS, hypoglycemia, etc. Also, after years of taking thyroid meds, I was able to wean off them. I still have some significant health issues (I have lots of food allergies and extreme chemical sensitivities, which limit my life greatly, and I continue to have some symptoms of Sjogren's), but I feel so much better overall that I can't see myself ever going back to my old diet.

  4. Regentrude, I agree with everything you posted except the part in burgundy:

This statement does not take into account that the percentage of students who attended high school one hundred years ago was much smaller than the practically 100% today, when compulsory education forces kids into school until 12th grade.

I can't even begin to tell you how many students in the areas in which I taught never made it past ninth grade. Some disappeared illegally when they weren't old enough to drop out, and nobody ever bothered to look for them. Others just rode it out until they turned 16. Now that the law is in place that prevents teens from having their drivers' licenses if they're not in school, more do stay longer, but many still aren't getting enough credits to get beyond ninth grade.

  5. Sorry it took so long - but it is done at last. You are the first to see it, so please let me know if you find typos, bad links or anything else.

Here is the link to the US History Course - http://fundafunda.com/prodpage. As I said before, I used this for both my sons before the took the AP US History exam. A friend's son has just done it too - I am hoping for great results from him too. I do know he felt good about the exam.

Hope it helps some of you.

This looks awesome! Thanks so much!

  6. Yes! I saw that! I am excited since next year will be our first "real" year homeschooling, and I was concerned about remembering to submit attendance. My personal opinion is that budget cuts are the reason for the reduction in required record submission. I'm sure keeping up with all the homeschooling records was a fulltime job or two that was cut. The cuts in education funding is ridiculous! For once, it seems to actually have benefited someone. My DH teaches HS, so normally cuts in education have a negative effect in our household. :(

That's probably part of it. I think the biggest issue, though, is that the state will be spending a lot of money on the charter schools law that passed (and there seems to be a lot of conflict of interest involved as well). The homeschooling changes were a part of that whole package.

  7. My daughter used Vocabulary for the High School Student. I like the Amsco books, but I'm having trouble finding the high school workbook for my son.

Amazon itself doesn't currently have one available, but there are new ones listed by other sellers. When it comes to workbooks, if I bought from an individual, I'd go with one that is fulfilled by Amazon.

  8. I've been researching and reading a lot about Destinos, including past threads on this board, and I've basically decided on Destinos for our Spanish program. However, I'm still confused about something. I see some people recommending the Second Edition and others recommending the Second Edition of the Alternate Edition. What are the main differences between these two? Are there advantages of one over the other? Also, does the workbook/study guide include answers? If so, in all editions or just a certain one?
