  1. BUT JENNIFER, IF YOU DON'T HELP THERE WILL BE NO VBS AND THEN WHAT ARE THE REST OF US GOING TO DO WITH OUR CHILDREN THAT WEEK???:lol::lol: Stay strong, girlfriend! You can do it!
  2. I have not used 100 EZ, but my oldest cried every time I got out Phonics Pathways, so I know what you mean! I ended up with MFW K, but she really knew all her letter sounds from preschool, so it was reinforcing and practice until reading clicked for her. I do think she enjoyed more ways of doing things than just staring at that primer.
  3. Thanks all! I would love to be able to add in more science. I know my girls would love it, and looking at the HOD days, I think we could manage it.
  4. I am not great at geography myself, but what about A Child's Geography by Ann Voskamp? It's written in a lovely narrative style. I think you could have your older one do independent reading or research to add to it if you felt they needed it. It's written for K-6 but I think it would work for older students too. Also, you could look at Charlotte Mason's Elementary Geography. I've linked to an HTML version, and you can also find it for free in Google books as a PDF that would work better for printing. Queen's Homeschool also has it in a printed version with some updated language, according to their website. I think a read-aloud book like this would work the best for your age spread. Hope this helps!
  5.:lol::lol: "Double toads!" That's awesome! Schmooey's friend at preschool had toads today and they let us have one. His name is Henry. :D I don't think Henry appreciates human company much, after spending the morning in the company of many 3- and 4-year-olds who liked him VERY much. However, he's happily munching the crickets I have for him and hopefully he will warm up to us a little bit. We had a gazillion tadpoles that were supposed to be bullfrogs, which turned out to be spring peepers, and turned into froglets while we were gone for 4 days. Our pet sitters kept faithfully dumping food in for them so their tank was disgusting when we got home. They started dying off so we had to turn them loose. Abbie was very sad and I told her we'd consider getting a pet frog. How fortuitous that Henry showed up to entertain us while I feel out dh's opinions on pet frogs! We're supposed to be studying amphibians just now so this is good. Right? :D
  6. The Clevercat litter boxes are great! That's what we have. They look like Rubbermaid boxes with a hole in the top. The tops are also ridged like litter mats, so most of the litter mess gets caught in them. They have greatly reduced our mess. We just use clumping litter. We like Tidy Cat but I don't think they have it at Sam's so we use whatever we can get there unless I go to PetSmart. I have tried the pine pellets but the cats didn't like them; too stinky. I will look and see if they have unscented wood pellets. That would be interesting to try. Now most of our mess comes from the cleaners of the boxes rather than the cats!
  7. I'm using the L'Oreal sulfate-free, paraben-free color care stuff. I like it pretty well.
  8. Yes, but you don't put them on your head at the same time! You scrub your head with baking soda, then rinse well, then apply vinegar as conditioner.
  9. 1) Do you have an Advance Directive in place for your own end of life care? No. (Dh and I both should.) 2) Who would you like to make decisions regarding your end of life care - a medical team, or those close to you (ie, your spouse, life partner, parents, children, siblings, religious advisor/pastor, etc)? Spouse, then children if adults, then parents. 3) Briefly state your age, family snapshot and whether you have any chronic health issues that affect your decisions (no details necessary, just trying to know whether or not you have a reason to have considered this issue before). Married, age 39, 3 children. I am obese and it does give me reason to think about this.
  10. So, I'm looking at HOD. I think it could work really well for us. I won't go into all my thoughts on that here because I came to ask about science, LOL. Can I do different science? How integral is the science in the rest of the program? I was looking at placement, and I think we would need to start in Creation to Christ. I was hoping to do the next level up, but realistically, I thing CtC is where we would need to be. (Look, I rhymed! :D) The thing is, I really want to do Elemental Science Biology next. We have not done life science yet. I've looked over ES program, I like what I see and I'm excited to do it. We haven't done the Apologia Zoology books, so it's not like HOD is repeating what we've already done.
  11. You're so welcome! I'm glad that my confusion came in handy this time. Confusion is one of my talents so let me know if you ever need me to be confused for you again. :D
  12. Mariann, your story is so important, it posted itself like 6 times! :grouphug: You're NOT the worst mom. We all do the best we can and of course hindsight is 20/20! I'm praying for you and your little guy and hope he feels better very soon!
  13. We are Apple lovers here, too! I haven't had a PC since I worked in Michigan which was about 13 years ago. :D Dh has been an Apple geek since he was in high school, and now he works for Apple - living the dream, I tell you. Macs are awesome. I rarely have problems with mine. There is no "blue screen of death" in the life of a Mac and viruses are basically non-existent. I agree with kath that running Parallels to get Windows programs to work has not been the most fun I've ever had, but there is very little that I need to run in Windows. Actually, there is nothing that I *need* to run in Windows because I don't do it and no one has died. Ha.
  14. Wow. You guys have done some amazing stuff! Jennifer, I'd love to see your plans, if you want to post them. What made you decide to use Lyrical Life Science? I have heard of it before but haven't looked at it. Regena, as always, your lesson plans are amazing. Heidi, your comments about the lack of experiments is EXACTLY why I think a curriculum might work better. See, this is what happens when I read WTM. SWB makes it all sound so EASY, and then I start trying to figure out the details and I'm befuddled. I would love to see your lesson plans too.
  15. Thanks for posting this! I have been considering this for Schmooey when he gets to K. It looks wonderful, and I'm so glad to hear that you like it!
  16. I have to confess that I am confused. Are you talking about Rose's Mnemosyne system? It's not a Bible memory work system. You could use it for that, but it's intended for any memory work. Are you thinking of something for visual memory work - like for picture study?
  17. KISS Grammar - it's a free grammar curriculum. I've been meaning to look at it for a while now; Ambleside Online recommends it and it's supposed to be really good.
  18. Age-wise, my girls are finishing up 4th & 5th grade right now. Science has definitely been lacking as I've tried to get my oldest, in particular, to do some MATH. I like the look of Elemental Science. Thanks for the reminder about that. It's available as a download, too, which makes it easy for me! Let me ask you this: Where did you get your DK Encyclopedia of Nature? Amazon shows it as OOP. I can get it used, I'm just wondering if you found it somewhere?
  19. I know I just asked about Astronomy & Earth Science. I got lots of fabulous advice and I really, really appreciated it! :D However, we've done no life science, and I'd like to do that with the girls before we move into the next step. I am thinking I will take the summer and really get into some science with them, which I think they will love, while I work on planning out the rest of our stuff. I re-read the WTM science section and was so excited by all the cool stuff we will get to learn! I have "How Nature Works" because someone sent it to me for FREE from this board (I can't remember who, but thank you!). I have been looking for the other books. It's no problem finding them. Here's the thing: I don't know how to make lesson plans for this stuff. :blushing: For example, the first 3 weeks on cells, etc. I don't know what to do. There are lovely diagrams of animal and plant cells. We can talk about them. Is that all I'm supposed to do? I don't know how in-depth it should be. I tend to go a little overboard, I think. I was hoping someone could tell me how they've done this, or point me to another thread. I did try to search but I didn't find what I was looking for. I feel like such a dork. I wonder if it would be better to just get something like Christian Kids Explore Biology and be done, rather than try to put this all together myself.
  20. :grouphug: Oh, honey, I'm sorry. It is so hard to do what you've had to do. You're a good daughter, though, and your mom will be OK. She knows you love her.
