  1. I put our timeline in the hallway that leads from our family room aka school room to the bedrooms. I hated it. I had it tacked up and it fell so many times throughout the year. I wanted it to be low enough that my daughter could put all the stuff on it and so everyone could enjoy it. However, it was so big that the paper would eventually fall over time. Plus, there is not really a way to preserve it. So, this year I came up with much better plan. I'm using TOG 2 and joined that yahoo group. Somone already uploaded file with the timeline figures and a printable timeline. I printed out the timeline on cardstock paper. Then, I took packing tape and taped the all the pieces together. I alternated the tape so that the timeline folds up in a neat stack. However, when layed out it is VERY long. I love the idea of having a long timeline to visualize history, but I love that it is very neat and can be easily tucked away. This way, my daughter can use it again in 4 years when we revisit this time period. She can add to her already existing timeline. Good luck! Rachl
  2. For those of you who have already typed up words on spelling city- is there any way for others to access those words? I'm just thinking it would be a big time saver. I'm new to Spelling City - just signed up. We're about to start AAS book 3. Wish I would have known about spelling city with the first two books. Thanks! Rachel
  3. I had an 8 yr old - just turned 9 year old that could not spell at all!!! I tried several programs. We got AAS, and my son can now spell - yipee! We just finished book 2. We'll start bok 3 tomorrow!
  4. We just finished AAS 1 with my 8 soon to be 9 year old. We did 1 lesson a day. He knew alot of the information, so there was no need to drag it out. I would normally make him spell the letters with the tiles and then write the dictation sentences. We have tried several spelling programs and this is the first one that has worked! He can actually write a sentence!! Although he felt that the information was very easy at first, he was excited to put stickers on his chart and complete book number 1. Hang in there!
  5. That's a good idea about packing food. We're staying on the MD side at the Gaylord, and I'm not sure where we'll be able to buy food to pack. We're flying in, so we really can't pack food to take. Any suggestions from people who are familiar with the area? Thanks for all the suggestions! Is everything in walking distance. If not, what's the safest, cheapest way to get around? I'm off to search online for info! Take care!
  6. We are going to accompany my husband to DC in a few weeks. He'll be in a conference every day so the kids and I will be free to roam around. I have an 11 yr old, 8 1/2 and 3 yr old. What must we go see???? (We'll catch a shuttle from the hotel down to the mall and then be on foot from there.) What can we see as a family in the evening? Any suggestions? Thanks!
  7. We use MUS and supplement with LOF. My daughter was very frustrated with the book at first. LOF presents information and then you you complete a few questions after each chapter. However, the chapter doesn't actually say this is how you complete the problem. The student has to take information they know/leanred and apply it. This drove my daugther crazy. However, it was also good to get her thinking. Now that we've talked about how the book is set up she's more confident knowing that she might not figure out how to work the problems initially, but that we can look at the asnwers and talk about them and that it's okay.
  8. We really liked : The Lost Queen of Egypt - Morrison. It is out of print, but we got it from ILL. The Children's Homer Stories from Herodotus - Downey. Out of print, but at our library. We liked listening to the Cat of Bubastes.
  9. I have my son write them on the board. He prefers writing on the board, and I can easily watch for any handwriting mistakes and easily see where he's struggling on a word - without having to hover over his paper. If I had two children doing the program, I would split them up so that they could work at their own pace. Best of luck!! We just discovered AAS this year, and I LOVE it!! My son is doing better with AAS than with any of the other programs we've tried.
  10. I love PBS and have a HUGE want list - the max at 200. I've found that some books I really want have a long wait list. You don't have to list any books to make a wish list. So, I would encourage people to join and start on their wish list. You can monitor it to see how you're moving down the list. Then, you could post some books. Or, you can post a few books to see how you like it. You also get credits for referring people and listing a certain amount of books. So, that's a great way to try it out. I'm careful about what I get from PBS. I don't get books that I know I could find at my local Goodwill for $.99. I've been blessed to receive alot of books off my wish list. Also, I think it's great fun to see where you are sending books and where you are receiving them from. Have fun!
  11. Has anyone used this??? I'm signed my daughter up for TOG 2, but just saw the classes are T-F from 12-1. We have a conflict on W. Can we still participate the other days? Would love to hear from someone who has used this site before. Thanks!!! Rachel
  12. My daughter is on level G, and I've never purchased the TM. I think there has been one instance where I couldn't figure out what they were asking for so we left it blank. Save your money for something else. :001_smile:
  13. When we were doing SOTW 4, my daughter was in 4th grade. We started late (see below) so we didn't finish at the end of the year. We were in the middle of a move, so I didn't continue to schoool. However, she continued to read the book on her own - after she realized I wasn't going to. At first I thought we "had" to finish, but I realized that we still have 2 more times to go through that time period and that she got what she needed at the time. With SOTW 3, we had to stop before we finished the book. We just picked up in the fall and finished where we left off. It was nice b/c no one else was on our cycle - so there was never a wait list for library books. We also could flow smoothly into SOTW 4 b/c we had just finished SOTW 3. Just b/c you've stopped schooling - you can always fill your library basket with the book selections from the SOTW 4 AG and see what happens. :001_smile:
  14. Hmmm - I didn't realize there were 36 weeks in a school year - shhhh, don't tell my kids!!! We would read 1 chapter a week. I would put the library books on hold several weeks ahead of time so they would be there for that week. I usually sit down at the computer and put about 3 or 4 weeks worth of books on hold. I put all the library books in our library basket as we picked them up. Normally when I would sit down to read a book my kids would say they had already read it. However, I usually found one or two we could do as a read aloud. As I read, they would do a coloring sheet. At the end of the week, we would do the map work. (My 2nd grader still can't spell, but he definitely knows where the Nile River is!!) :001_smile: They also did a narration sheet. SOTW is so much fun and easy to read! I'm sure you can easily combine a few chapters (maybe the ones on India or Japan) or just read a few chapters for "fun", but not require any narration pages or mapwork. Best of luck!
  15. We use the DVD - that's the first day. Then, the 2nd day we make flashcards. 3rd day do the worksheet. I check. Thursday redo any that were wrong. Friday - take the test. Best of luck with it. I have to say I LOVE the DVDs - I don't think we would have stuck with it w/out them.
  16. :iagree: We have all three and ended up using PP as the last one and it worked great!!!
  17. We had a timeline in our hallway this year, but it has fallen down a million times as the kids go by. So, I've decided this year we need to put it in a notebook. Does anyone have any good sites where I can print off pages with the years already printed on them. I like the idea of the horizontal format listed here http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/TimelineHelps/ If you've done this and had success and you know where I can get a free template to print off I would appreciate it!! Or, if you have any other great ideas - would love to hear those also. Thanks!!
  18. Yes, I saw that....but starting in TOG week 11 there are no page numbers, it just says SOTW vol 2 and later vol 3. I guess I was hoping to read SOTW as usual and to add in the TOG, but now I'm realizing that it just doesn't work out exactly that way. I guess I'll have to read TOG and fit in SOTW. Hmmm. I need some really organized person to plan it all out for me!!:D Thanks!!
  19. Has anyone used these two together. This is my first year to use TOG. My daughter is going in to 6th grade, so I think it's time for a switch after using SOTW for the past 5 years. My son is going in to 3rd grade, and I think SOTW is still a good fit for him. I'm trying to get organized and use the filebox system with the 36 week folders. As I'm separating maps, coloring sheets, etc... from SOTW - I can't figure out how they fit together with TOG. I printed off something from Paula's Archives that lists TOG and SOTW chapters and how they relate. However, I'm still not getting it. For example, in the first week of TOG, you're supposed to put Clovis the Frank on the timeline. However, he shows up in chapter 13 of SOTW. I REALLY don't want to read the entire SOTW and TOG books in the next week and spend countless hours woring it out if someone else has already been there done that. Anyone????? What did you do????? Would love for my 3rd grader to still do narration and activity pages and listen to SOTW and my 6th grader to follow TOG. Help me please!!!! :001_smile: (Plus I have a soon to be 3 year old who likes to "do school" - so we give him coloring sheets too.) THANKS!!!!
  20. Anything in particular you didn't like about their books???
  21. My daughter is going in to 6th grade and I'm wondering what logic program to use. Any recommendations. I know my version of TWTM says to use Critical Thinking Book 1 and 2. I haven't seen the new version - so, I'm not sure if that is still used. I know alot of people use the Bluedorn books. I just found one used at a book sale. However, after bringing it home, I found that all the answers are torn out of the back - which means I need to buy another book if I use that. What will you be using with your 6th grader???? THANKS!!
  22. I just checked out the site. I think I'm going to order it for my son (8 1/2), who CANNOT spell! Do I need to order the magnetic strips to add to the tiles. Can we just use the tiles on the floor, or do you need a magnetic board and magnetic strips. Thanks for any help you can give me!!
  23. What are the best websites to check for used revised TOG??? Of course I check here - are there any other good sites that sell used curriculum? Thanks!
