  1. My 6th grader is using level G this year. It is set up a little differently. The marking system is different. They mark base words, suffixes, prefixes and compound words instead of letter chunks.
  2. I went to our school library today and now I no longer own Math Mammoth, Miquon, MUS or Singapore (a few random workbooks don't count right? Lol). However I now have Jacobs algebra, Chalkdust Algebra, and Right Start 2nd edition A and C-E. LOL 😂 I don't count Life of Fred because we get it from the library...
  3. My name is Anne and I am addicted to math programs. :D In order to make room for more books, I decided to get rid of the math programs we are no longer using. I'm a little embarrassed by the huge stack sitting on my kitchen table right now. :O I have: Math Mammoth 4-6 Miquon, all of it MUS beta thru zeta Strayer Upton book 1 Singapore 1&2, 16 books in all MEP year 1 Franklin Primary Arithmetic Gattengo book 1 plus PDL cards/worksheets This doesn't include what we are using right now (CLE, Beast Academy, Right Start).
  4. Yeah I checked both my city library and my county library (separate systems) and the inter library loan which connects with all libraries in my state. And nothing.
  5. I keep hearing how great this book is, but everywhere I look it costs $40-50. It doesn't seem possible it's worth that?? Where can I find an affordable copy? I already checked my library and they don't have it.
  6. You could use the math Mosaic series for fact practice http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=Mathematics/10&category=Math+Mosaics+Series/2536
  7. Wow it's funny to see your own old thread bumped up. :D It's from almost 3 years ago. I think I was struggling to juggle Singapore math when I posted this. We went from there to MUS, which is lovely easy to use, but the weird S&S got to me more and more and the extreme mastery became as issue for my struggling math student. I now pretty much use something different for each kid. LOL. My struggler is doing great in CLE now. My oldest is using Beast Academy. My third kid is using Right Start with Beast as a supplement. Number four starts next year and I'll probably use Right Start. If I could go back and give myself advice, which of course my younger self wouldn't understand/listen to 😂 ... I'd say don't worry about how I'll fit it all in once all four kids are in school, but just do what's best for now because it just keeps changing as the kids change from year to year. Next year I will have four kids in school and while I am panicking a bit, the older kids are so much more capable that things go so much more smoothly than I could ever have imagined 3 years ago.
  8. Thank you everyone for your help. I will be continuing to do a RS/BA combo with him. Because of comments the weaknesses in BA as a sole program, I now have a question about my oldest. My 6th grader is doing Beast as his only program. He started in 3 this school year and is in the middle of 3D now. I figured he'd get thru 4B this year and next year do 4C-5D, putting him in pre algebra in 8th, which is fine. If he already has mental math ability, already knows time and money, and knows the algorithms for addition/subtraction/multiplication/long division (from past years with Singapore and MUS), will this still be a problem? Or for an older kid, do these weaknesses not apply and BA is fine as a stand alone?
  9. This is very helpful. I know the later levels are much harder than 2, so I will probably prefer to use it behind grade level as we go on. It's good to know RS picks up speed later on too. My biggest problem with doing both is time/condensing issues. I believe in short lessons for my little guys and I'm feeling constantly time crunched with four kids to teach. But then I also feel the pressure to finish each RS level in a year. LOL If, based on the RS placement test, my little guy places in level C now, should I skip ahead to C? It has so much review, that I'm thinking anything he hasn't totally mastered from B will be reviewed enough that he'll have time to get it? Eta: ooh using BA as a supplement would fix one problem I have with RS, what to do on busy days when I don't have time to teach RS
  10. My 1st grade son had been using and loving Right Start B this year, but during a recent family crisis I gave him BA 2a to do because I just didn't have time for RS. I need to help him occasionally, but he does most of the workbook on his own. He loves it so much that he picks it over RS, which he used to ask for every day. Now I'm wondering if I should just let go of RS and let him do BA and some fact practice. He can finish 2a this year, with some fact practice games to fill in. And then next year he could do 2b-c-d (I think that works with the production schedule?) plus fact practice. Or would there be a benefit to continuing to fit in RS twice a week? Tho that did create work for me because I already had to condense lessons for this kid and if he's doing BA also is need to condense even more, but without making his math lesson too long. If I did continue both for now, would it be best to do the Subtraction lessons in RS C before dropping it? We're using 1st edition. Eta: I just redid the RS placement test for him and they recommend level C. He's only done half of level B, but he picks things up quick.
  11. Are we planning 2018/2019 school year? :D My youngest will be 5 in November and doing TK. LA: finish AAR pre level and get set for the code. When he's ready; Reading eggs, ETC, and Bob books. Which might not be till the following year. Math: my preference is for cuisenairre rods/Gattengo/Miquon, and I sure have purchased enough of that stuff I should use it, BUT I'm struggling with balancing four kiddos and open and go Right Start A may just be what my tired brain needs. He has super enjoyed the yellow is the sun book this year and playing with things during his older brothers lessons. And math seeds, he's really enjoying that right now. Lit: classic picture books History/science: tag along with the family, using Layers of Learning year 3 Enrichment: he'll probably do an early music awareness class, swimming or maybe gymnastics, nature study.
  12. https://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=Curriculum/2&category=Well+Planned+Gal+Curriculum+Kits/14355 I just ran across this at Rainbow resource and wondered if anyone has used it?
  13. For my kid that did this, understood the math but was careless when doing it, I would assign half the page and then for every problem he got wrong he not only had to fix it he also had to do an additional problem. This motivated him to get it right the first time. I know Singapore doesn't have a lot of problems on a page, so only doing 4 problems may not seem like enough but at least doing 4 problems with full attention is going to teach them more? Maybe you could get the extra practice book and use that to have them do more work on the same concept the next day? That way they get more practice of the concept?
  14. I agree. CLE has much more young child friendly instructions. I think math Mammoth assumes the parent will be teaching the younger grades. The teaching boxes are the same format in all the levels, whether 1st grade or 6th grade. And yeah, MM has the same number of problems as CLE, they're all just squished onto 2 pages. CLE may be 4 pages, but it looks much less overwhelming to kids. If CLE is out, then I second the suggestion for MUS.
  15. I have a kid using level G and I do have the manual, but I only occasionally use it for the dictation. I look at the passage after he marks it, but don't really care if he misses a word or two. The dictation is easily given using a previous page from the student book.
  16. AAR, I started and stopped this one so many times. A third of the way thru level 4, I finally threw in the towel. My daughter was very happy when I did. Lol AAS, similar, I started and stopped this at least 3 times with my oldest. Tried it once with my daughter and am contemplating giving it another go with her because she really is an abysmal speller. Giving R&S spelling a try first, it's painless and gets done, but the jury's still out on whether it'll actually improve her spelling. Singapore math- love the way it teaches, hate the book juggling. Right Start math- hate all the pieces, but my current 1st grader LOVES it so I'm suffering thru it for now. But anytime life starts happening, this is one of the first things to get dropped.
  17. These are the things still getting done despite a family emergency last month... CLE math R&S spelling Climbing to Good English Beast Academy Spelling You See Write On! Evan Moore Daily Science Pathway readers Murche science readers Librivox audio books
  18. For Jack and Jill book A you'll need it, after that you can get away without it.
  19. My youngest will be in kindy, but since he doesn't turn 5 till the end of November I'll be spreading kindergarten over 2 years. AAR pre reading ETC get set for the code series. Possibly reading eggs as a supplement Math... I want to use Gattengo and Miquon, but it may be too open-ended for me to actually get done. Lol. In which case, I will try right start with him. He's been enjoying a free trial of math seeds the past few weeks, I may let him do that on the side. He will also tag along with Layers of Learning year 3.
  20. My son was very similar, it would take him two hours to do two pages of Math Mammoth. And he hated doing math in school, even tho he enjoyed it and would do it for fun outside of school. I switched him to Beast Academy this year and he is loving it. He told me he can focus now because it's so interesting. Lol
