  1. Thanks everyone. You have been helpful. Time to check into an evaluation. Kristine in VA
  2. Yes, I would say it seems to be vowel sounds that cause the most trouble. Kristine in VA
  3. Hi, I haven't been on the boards in a looong time, but thought someone here might have experience with this. My ds, who will be 4 in August, seems to get stuck in his speech. He was slow to talk, but he is also the third child. He'll say something like, "I waaaaa.....nt some juice" or "How yooooooouuuu do that?" Sometimes he can't get the entire sentence out. He's like a stuck record. I feel like patting him on the back to keep him going. We are very careful not to tease him, and sometimes he gets frustrated. One time he got really stuck, couldn't get the sentence out and then yelled very clearly, "I can't say those words!" It also seems to come and go, so I wonder if he will grow out of it or maybe he needs speech therapy. Thanks for any ideas, Kristine in VA
  4. Well, my dd is 10 (5th grade next year). I was thinking about how logic would progress for her over the 4 logic years. In 5th grade, I'm going to do Mind Benders and Building Thinking Skills. Then for 6th the Critical Thinking books I and II are recommended, but I was wondering if The Art of Argument would cover the same material. My ds will be do Traditional Logic I next year. Perhaps I should use A of A to supplement his study? Thanks, Kristine in VA
  5. Hey, I'm considering Logic programs for my dd. Do these programs cover the same topics. I've looked at samples online and the Art of Argument looks more "user friendly". Any thoughts? Thanks, Kristine in VA
  6. Hi, Here's another thought for finding an OG trained tutor for free. I am currently taking classes to be certified as a Wilson tutor. Part of the training requires me to tutor a student who has reading difficulties. You might contact Wilson (check their website) and see if there is anyone in your area looking for a student to tutor. The Wilson program includes instruction for older students, which might work for you son. All the best, Kristine in VA
  7. I am using FFL with a 4th and 7th grader, and I really like it. The 4th grader finished LC I and the 7th grader had finished LCII, but I thought he needed some additional reinforcement/review before moving on. I like the structure and practice activities much better than the LC series. I want to move on to the next level if it has been published. I haven't checked yet.
  8. Thank you. That makes perfect sense about word families, and I really like the idea of her checking her work against the original. I'll start working these ideas in next week! Kristine in VA
  9. Hi, I am using WWE with my 3rd grader and all is going well so far. My question refers to dictation. Dd can write down the dictation well, but her spelling needs help. How do you check spelling on dictation work? Correcting as she writes would seem to defeat the purposed of dictation, so we have been checking over her work at the end, and I point out and we correct mistakes. However, I don't want her to begin to feel badly about misspelling words that she may not have learned yet. Thoughts? Thanks, Kristine in VA
  10. Hey, I have been re-reading my WTM and notes that I have on teaching writing from Susan's workshops, and I've put together a plan for my 6th grader's writing. Last year we did 1-level outlines for history, and he seems fairly comfortable with that. So this year I was thinking he should do 2-level outlines of history and/or science twice a week, 1 summary each week (4-5 sentences) on a history or science topic he chooses (I will probably choose sometimes), and 1 summary each week on the plot or a plot element of the literature he is reading. We will also write 1-2 letters a month. Does that sound reasonable? Should I be thinking about something else or other skills to introduce, such as how to take notes, compare/contrast, or cause/effect writing or maybe that is a high school skill? We are using R&S 6 grammar so I could work in their writing lessons, but I also don't want to plan too much. Also I have used Classical Writing Aesop with him in the past which worked well. Maybe I should plan to do Homer and my plan above? I have that feeling I'm missing something, so maybe you all can reassure me! Thanks for you thoughts, Kristine in VA
