  1. Hello All!!! I'm looking for a post by maybe Janice in NJ or Nan about SAT essay prep. She talked about having her kids set up a index card box with headings that covers the most used topics of SAT essays. Then, as the kids encountered characters/people in their reading or history or science or current events that exhibited those characteristics etc, they would write a note, include any quotes etc and file them in the box. Does anyone have a link to this or copied it to a document? Thanks! Capt Uhura (Sybil)
  2. OH NO!!! Kalanamack!!!! I definitely remember you!!! I am so saddened to read this news. My heart is just breaking. Much love and peace to your family. Capt Uhura
  3. The wonderful part was being able to sit and have lunch w/ MCT! He's wonderful to chat with in person. And yes, Dr. K. promises that accommodations are MUCH MUCH MUCH GREATLY improved over last year! It's not an infomercial for RFWP at all. Last year, SWB was able to attend and as you know, both produce Language arts curricula. Dr. K is about helping us help our kids! All the WTMers that attended descended upon a restaurant and had a wonderful dinner together. (I wasn't there as I was helping to set up). We had lunch times and break times where we were able to sit and chat w/ MCT, SWB, and Dr. K. You do get to sit and look at all of the RFWP materials. We're hoping to grow this into a much larger conference that focuses on academics w/out all the other drama of the other conferences, which shall remain nameless.
  4. YEAH!!!! I'm sure it will be another fabulous conference! What I love most is being able to sit and interact with so many wonderful HSers from this forum!!! Spread the word!
  5. Hi, I have someone who would like to pull her son out of the school district in Philadelphia. What is the first thing she needs to do? How detailed does the affidavit need to be regarding the educational plan. If you have a sample I can share with her, that would be great. Thanks, Capt Uhura
  6. Ha Ha Ha I LOVE THIS THREAD!!! I grew up near New Orleans but live in the NOrtheast. Red beans usually mean red kidney beans, you know, the ones shaped like kidneys. But up here, they do have a small red bean and it's labeled "red bean." It takes longer to cook than red kidney beans (which down south is just red beans) and it tastes a bit different as well.
  7. Hello Hive, My 7th grader is dealing with complications from Lyme Disease. I need video recommendations for Middle Ages. If there is a thread that list some, please point me to it. A quick search didn't turn up anything. Thank you, Capt Uhura
  8. I haven't been around for many months busy running a home biz and HSing but I just have to say, Lori D, that post was fantastic! That is most certainly going to be printed out and put in my binder with your other wonderful posts! I miss this forum!!!!!! It's great to be back!
  9. I'm wondering the same thing. My son writes painfully slow in cursive. He goes much faster typing but I wonder about the SAT where he'll have to be able to write quickly and legibly. Capt Uhura
  10. Probably!!! Daisychicks had sent me a PM asking about it and since we're working furiously to finish up WWS1 so we can get back to WWS2, I had WWS2 on the brain. I think it would be great for BOTH. There are some logical breaks. How about breaking out the Literary Crit in WWS1 weeks 23-26 into it's own thread. And then the Research weeks 27-31, 35. And poetry weeks 32-34. That would make finding what you're on a bit more manageable. That leaves weeks 1-22. We could split that up into 1-11, 12-22 or even further...maybe 5,5,5,7 week splits? What do you all think? Sybil
  11. HI All, Would it be easier to segment the WWS2 samples by weeks? It would make it easier to find content related to the week you are on if we did so. Or is this too complicated? Sybil
  12. Thanks NJKelli! I'll keep your family in my thoughts! Nathan had a bad episode last night at dinner. It's sad and frustrating. He is just so different from what he used to be. We're on vacation and he has been completely normal and then bam, he complained of nausea before dinner, then went to dinner and his food was the tiniest bit spicy then couldn't get him to eat anything or try anything else. Then he couldn't walk back to the hotel which of course gets DH upset. Then DS starts to cry and begins his "I'm dizzy" and stumbling....it's a downward spiral. He did recover by the time we got home b/c DH and my other son raced us running while we hopped on the trolley so that bit of fun and excitement broke him out of it. We don't know what is just personality, anxiety, some underlying as yet undiagnosed disorders which then triggers anxiety..... and he's a drama queen as it is so where one ends and a real issue begins is unknown.
  13. NJKelli, First of all, big huge hugs. Second, I know exactly what you're going through. We've been dealing with this for a year now. My 12yr old son has been dealing with chronic nausea and fatigue since February. The fatigue started in Fall of 2012. In Feb, the nausea began. He was at that time diagnosed with Lyme Disease. He was put on antibiotics which destroyed his intestinal system. He was so sick and vomiting, he couldn't get off the couch for 30days. He got better for 2 weeks and we thought cured. Then the nausea returned. HE was put on another antiobiotic for 30days. That antibiotic didn't hurt or help. Since then he's had an endoscopy/colonoscopy with about 10 different biopsies as well as abdominal ultrasound, stool cultures .... everything NEGATIVE. The pedi GI doc suggested anxiety. It did seem to fit a mild depression and the best thing we could do was to get him back into life. Get him back to playing soccer and TKD. Subsequent with illness, he missed a TKD belt test, then tested after not being there for 2 mths and didn't pass which was devastating for him. Then his travel soccer team dissolved. He tried out for another team which would have him playing a year up. Before every practice, he would be practically in tears, near vomiting in the car but he would then be fine once he started playing. Sadly, he didn't make the team, mostly b/c his stamina is just not there after being sick any lying on a couch for a year. We think DS has become anxious over his illness and about not getting better. But he gets nauseous still after he eats. He lost a lot of weight but that has stabilized and he was very skinny to begin with. HE also suffered memory loss w/ the Lyme disease and that really shook him up. And while all this was going on initially, my husband was being treated for malignant thyroid cancer. So yep, a lot going on. That has sense thankfully been taken care of and DH is fine. I know my son has, what do that call it? Over excitability??? He has EXTREMELY sensitive taste buds, sensitive to sound, extremely sensitive to pain and hyperfocuses on the least scratch. He was like this as an infant. He would get overstimulated and then cry for hours. This to say that ALL of these have gotten MUCH worse over the past few months. I think that something has happened in his brain. THe Dr said it could be a result of the Lyme disease triggering something. Please, if you get any more info on your DD could you let me know? THis might not be my son's issue but anything we can rule out is a step in the right direction. I will look into getting a pedi neurology consultation scheduled for him. Capt Uhura
  14. I agree. If he's talking about a sea clock, I have no idea what one looks like. It would be nice if he could paint me a picture. 8-)
  15. WWS2 Week 2 Day 3 What is a microwave? How does it work? You may ask and receive mixed responses such as magic or check the internet. The microwave was invented accidently in 1946 by an engineer named Percy Spencer. Spenser, who was working at Raytheon Corporation on a project related to radars, happened to stand near a magnetron. This device emits microwave radiations. He had a bar of chocolate in his pocket. Later, he realized the chocolate had melted. “Further experiments with popcorns and eggs confirmed his suspicions that the microwave radiations emitted by the magnetron were somehow able to raise the temperature of the food placed near it and hence, as a result, could be used effectively for cooking purposes.†Presently, the microwave is a rectangle shaped kitchen appliance that can vary in size and colors. A small microwave is about 24†across, 10†high, and 12†deep. A larger microwave may be around 30†across, 16†tall, and 15†deep. It has a door on the front with a handle or button on the front, and a turntable on the inside. The turntable turns as the microwave runs. It has buttons for different settings. The buttons control on/off, time, and power. Microwaves can usually be found on a counter, mounted beneath a cabinet or mounted over a stove. A microwave works by beaming radio waves into food, which excites the molecules in the food, thus heating it up. Because the radio waves move the atoms which makes heat, the food is cooked evenly. As the turntable spins, it helps to even out the heating of denser foods that the waves can not penetrate well. A light comes on so you can see how well the food is cooking through the window. To pause the process, press the pause button or just open the door. Microwaves are most commonly used to reheat foods and to thaw frozen foods rather cook raw foods.
  16. Same for beer. I've always hated beer. Then went I went to Prague and Germany, I realized it's just cheep American beer I didn't like!!! I'm sure there are pricier American beer I might like but when you're early 20s, all people have is cheap beer. Luckily, I don't drink beer. now chocolate on the other hand..... I can't wait to get to this lesson! Ha Ha Ha.
  17. To all the Johnny Depp fans... I showed Kalmia this ecard and she knew you would love this! Capt Uhura
  18. I don't like splitting the subject and the verb that way. Not sure what that is called. I like "misplaced modifier." It's more of an introductory phrase and those are usually at the beginning, separated by a comma or tacked on to the end.
