  1. I know this is veering off topic, but yes, that is my sisters complaint to that name. "She is going to have to correct everyone!!" Anymore I've noticed people have spell your name, even if it is the simplest name like Nicole (an example name). "So it's N...i...c...o...l...e, correct?" When I was younger, there wasn't much hesitation if you said your name was let's say Nicole. They assumed it was spelled like everyone else. I figure it's easier nowadays to have a unique name than 30-40 years ago. Back to the regularly scheduled topic of Spurgeon.
  2. I agree. I was working on my family tree and ran across the first and middle name of Adoniram Judson (I'm not sure which last name of my tree this is). I was intrigued as to why someone would name their child something so out there and found out that he was a real person. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adoniram_Judson Obviously they put thought into who they wanted to honor. When I heard the Seewald's baby name, I knew that they had a particular reason for that name. Different? Sure. But nothing is better than having a story behind why you named your child a particular name. I fully intend (if the name matches my baby, of course) my next daughter Cady after Elizabeth Cady Stanton. I watched a documentary on her and fell in serious like with her and who she was as a person. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Cady_Stanton My sister, on the other hand, does not tie a story to her children's names. If she likes it, she will name them that. So while I have stories as to why I picked many of my children's names, she tells me she named her children because she seen it and liked it. Different people, different methods of naming children. I hope they stop calling him Quincy though. That'll get confusing real quick for the child.
  3. I'm thinking of Christmas shopping at the end of the month when we have the money, instead of last minute like every other year. I don't shop for family because no one wants to buy for ALL of my kids, so it's pretty simple. My kids aren't going to change their want lists in the next few months, so I'm confident on what I have planned.
  4. Yep. I googled to find out which states had banned this idea and got only three: California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. Apparently, the companies actually call them "insurance scores". Better credit history = less risk. Many companies state "92% of insurers also consider credit when determining auto insurance premiums" (wish I knew the companies that didn't). This is why my sister pays a lot more than she thinks she should have to for car insurance (I agree with her), while my other sister pays a lot less for a much better policy (MUCH better credit history than the first sister).
  5. Kingsford ingredients Kingsford sends a form letter in response to consumers' questions about the ingredients. According to the form letter sent in August, 2000, Kingsford contains the following ingredients: wood char mineral char mineral carbon limestone starch borax sodium nitrate sawdust Purpose of ingredients There so many ingredients because the addition of each requires another to offset its negative affect. For example, in order to make the briquets easier to light, sodium nitrate is added. But then limestone is added so that, when the briquettes get started, they have the typical light-ash color. Here are the purposes for each of the ingredients: wood char: for heat mineral char: also for heat mineral carbon: also for heat limestone: for the light-ash color starch: to bind the other ingredients borax: press release sodium nitrate: to speed the ignition sawdust: to speed the ignition http://old.cbbqa.org/wood/Kingsford.html
  6. I'm hoping there isn't anything I really want on sale, because then my sister will be getting my late birthday wish list. Why can't paydays be in the middle of the week?

  8. You can be allergic to roaches as well (I have a son allergic to cockroaches). Everything you mention (detergent, heat, chicken pox/shingles) could be a possibility. If the doctor determines it is not a medical cause, then I would change your laundry detergent. Really nothing you can do about the heat. My younger son gets horrible heat rashes, which is why we actually did not suspect bedbugs at first. It sounds like you have an exterminator so I wouldn't worry as much about the roaches in case you are allergic. So far it doesn't seem like bedbugs which is really good news.
  9. We had bedbugs. It appears they came with the house. We ended up purchasing a kit from some pest site online. We sprayed whatever chemicals were given, use the DE (make sure you get every single crack like windowsills, baseboards, wooden floor cracks, dressers, picture frames, wooden mirrors, even electric outlets), repeated every 3 weeks for like 3 or 4 rounds. We also threw out our mattresses (this house was really bad), our blankets (ewwwww bed bug blood) and pillows, most of our couches (we needed somewhere to sit so some got chemical treatment and will be tossed once we have money for another couch set), wooden bed frames (they can hide in cracks in wood). We bagged/boxed all our clothes and toys and books and took them downstairs. It's been like 6months and I'm finally starting to empty out the bags/boxes and wash them. You will see them most likely. They are most prominent on the edges of mattresses. And at night, take a light and watch the bed and floor. You can see them crawling around. I still keep an eye out for them. We all slept in one area for the first round. Then we bought new mattresses (nothing fancy, just to have a place to sleep), blankets and pillows (we did not purchase the bed bug resistant covers for the mattresses, too expensive). Our frames are now metal (easier to clean and check). No more bedbugs, but we will continue randomly treating the house. Worst experience EVER.

  11. Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) would be the equivalent. This is my worst fear after almost losing a child to SIDS. How awful for your cousin and the family.
  12. Northeast Iowa here and apparently the eggs I bought yesterday (Grade A Large White Dozen Eggs) cost $3.29. *faint* Hopefully Wal-Mart or Sam's Club has them cheaper when I go shopping, because wow, I might have to stop buying eggs at that price...
  13. I think last night was the final straw. Her friend messaged her and told my sister "I wrecked my car for you. Why would you even think of suing me?" (My sister was leaving her boyfriend and staying with her friend for a week.) You do not wreck a car for someone. No one in all of time has said, "I would wreck a car for you". Never ever. I am currently hoping some popular (or not so popular) band writes a song around the lines of "I will wreck my car for you". Then we have a song for her friend. And another message telling my sister about friend's perfect life and marriage and how my sister would not mess that up (around those lines). There is no remorse, no "How's the hand?", no talking whatsoever. It happened, it's over, move on with my life is her friend's attitude.
  14. Short story, the system fails. The end. Ok, the long version is here. She had surgery on her hand. There are still some concerns and recovery will be between another 4-6 months, but the doctor is hopeful that all will be well. That means 4-6 months of not working, no income, no life, etc etc. She did find a lawyer. Yes, her friend has the absolute minimum insurance on her car ($25k bodily injury). That is ALL she can get. Now, my sister can sue. But her friend's husband already talked to his lawyer friends. The injury lawyer says yes, my sister will win. The bankruptcy lawyer has drawn up the papers to file once my sister files a lawsuit against them. She will get NOTHING. Nothing. And this is legal. All my sister gets for a severe hand injury is $25k (that will go to medical bills) and a sorry about your luck. The state of Iowa has granted her medical insurance to cover the rest of her bills. She will get a small amount of money for food until she gets a job (at least I hope so). My other sister will let her live with her until she can get a job. Six months of my sister's life (pretty much the rest of the year) will be gone. I am angry for her. Absolutely positively angry. Now the other driver is still 40% at fault, but they are taking it to court. There is a chance she will get a small settlement from the other driver. At this moment, though, I'm not holding my breath.
  15. I am assuming on how much each party is at fault. It is good to hear that it won't impact her. She was worried that she would have a second company to deal with.
  16. Her friend's insurance is still paying her medical bills. They called my sister today to let her know they will make their final decision within a few days. I cannot understand how the mail truck could hold any fault whatsoever, though. It seems like it will complicate an uncomplicated matter.
  17. Doctor said she most likely has permanent nerve damage in different sections of her hand (like her palm and the tip of her finger). Since her wrist was not immobilized, he thinks that her wrist might have sustained more damage from accidental use during the week before she seen him (she was wearing a brace). She will be in a permanent cast for 10 days, remove it to take out her stitches and then another one put on for another week or two. After it is removed a second time, they will do new x-rays and see how it looks. It might need to be broken again and pins put in it (finger and wrist). I haven't heard another about the thumb fracture. She does not have health insurance and that day she had quit her job (so no lost wages). Even worse is that despite the fact her friend ran the red light, at present it is being stated that her friend is only 60% at fault. From what I understand, a truck swerved to avoid hitting her friend's car and the mail truck behind him instead hit her. The government has retained a lawyer. This is sounding more complicated every day. My sister is thinking that her friend should be 100% at fault. She is extremely frustrated that her friend could run a red light and only be partially to blame. Her friend even told the insurance company, the police and anyone who has asked that she did run the red light. But nope, not 100% at fault because I guess rules that I don't understand? Now that she is in Iowa, she is applying for Medicaid (thank you Iowa for extending that program to poor adults). Geico says they will try to help her out as much as possible, but with her estimated recovery at least 2 months, it's going to take some time for any kind of settlement. My question is, does it make it more complicated that her friend is not 100% at fault?
  18. So she is out. They said it most likely is not tetanus, gave her another tetanus shot and sent her on her way. They believe it's an overreaction of her immune system (?). They wanted to do a CT scan, but billing apparently told her that they will be charging her for this visit (not the insurance company) so she declined. I think this falls under the car accident, but I'm not sure. I told her to forward the bill to them anyways. I'm not sure on her health insurance status. I *thought* she had her own health insurance. I'll have to clarify that later.
  19. She is now in the ER. It is now suspected that she has developed tetanus (is that even the proper wording)? I know she had that vaccine within the past 5-6 years, but apparently it didn't work (or she might have been odd and needed a booster after this time). Waiting for an update. I need to make sure she mentions the car accident in case she didn't mention it. And of course Google is freaking me out.
  20. I spoke with her briefly. She is frustrated and only wants her hand to work. I've told her briefly what other people are saying on here. She is hoping Monday comes, the doctor tells her the damage is much less ( I doubt it but hey stranger things have happened) and she can move on with her life. I do feel badly for her. She has no support system really in place beyond me, and I'm still hours away from her. I'll update after Monday unless I send her back to the ER for her hand swelling (something she is trying to avoid). So far it doesn't seem to have got worse, so I'm watching and waiting.
  21. Yep, I agree. He's not *technically* giving her legal advice, just more of acting as if he was her friend he would advise her to take the check. He would never take the case, and he is letting her friend deal with everything (who also agrees to take the check *sigh*).
  22. I need to ask her this. Her friend's insurance company is GEICO. I'm trying to advise as best I can, which is why I turned here. With such a wide range of people, I'm sure I'll find the answers I need. Thank you.
  23. My two sisters and I all have had the "just take the money moments" and so far, we have turned down every one. My other sister was in a car accident last month and insurance offered her a couple thousand to repair a dent in her trunk. She didn't take it as it didn't seem right (older vehicle that a new trunk would not help it's value any). Of course, she also got the free money speech from her friends, but she stood strong.
  24. She has access to a lawyer (her friend's husband) who tells her to just take the check. But I don't think he is the most impartial guy around considering the circumstances. Hmmm, but maybe a lawyer could advise her better, but of course it needs to be free advice as she has no money right now.
