  1. Strangely, though, my house did not get ANY cleaner. I'm pretty sure I was told that that's what would happen while the Hive was down. Hmph!
  2. Oh boy, I always dreaded pinworms as much as lice! Ugh... I had to spend $160 to take a kid to the doctor when the Hive could have just told me not to worry and the problem (nasty tonsils) would be gone in a few days. Think Susan will reimburse me? LOL!
  3. We're all having the same problem. I'm sure it's one of the glitches that will get worked out. In the meantime, hi!!!
  4. I found the Display Name area, but I can't seem to change anything.
  5. This thread is absolutely hilarious!! I don't think I've laughed this hard here in awhile. And I seriously just remembered something I need to research frantically before we go dark! I also just realized I was never approved for the WTM FB group. HMPH!!! Going to need to look into that...
  6. And I just checked our Citadels game, and the dimensions are the same as Sushi Go, except that it's about 1.5 inches longer, so it could probably stand upright in a basket. We love Citadels, though it does require four people.
  7. The Fluxx games are fun, and there a bunch of variations. We enjoy our zombie Fluxx a lot.
  8. I am so very sorry. That's just totally devastating. I really, really hope the doctor is wrong. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  9. OMG, this actually just made my anxiety spike and my heart pound. Stop it!!! :svengo:
  10. I'm pretty sure the pink banner is just linking to the wrong pinned post.
  11. There are already a couple of FB groups, I think. Their memberships are about to surge
  12. Apparently I'm about to get to know my FB groups really well!
  13. Long Time Gone, Long Way Around, Lubbock or Leave It -- The Dixie Chicks There's also Goodbye Earl, but it might not exactly be everyone's taste!
  14. The only way we solved this was by not using a cover anymore. Hard on the grill but easier than having to chase out mice and chipmunks every spring.
  15. Thank you, I will definitely keep the value of balance in mind. She's been getting more and more into archery, and we're about to get her her own bow, so hopefully that will be something else for her to build on. Again, this is the first extracurricular she's ever found rewarding enough to stick with in spite of the anxiety it can engender, so we'll support it every way we can!
  16. For anyone who didn't also read my math schedule thread: Thank you again, so much! I'm sorry it took me so long to come back. We're hosting visiting family this week, and it has been a whirlwind of cleaning, prep, and hosting family gatherings. I finally ordered the Bio lab kit (the big LabPaq). We're both really looking forward to all the experiments. There are two dissection specimens in there--crayfish and grasshopper, I believe--and she's looking forward to both (though she scoffed a little and called them dissections for babies, since she's already soooo experienced, having done the cow eye). I might just let her do those on her own while I find something to do on another floor of the house :ack2: Thank you all for the fantastic information. I will share as much as I can with her without freaking her out  It's really wonderful to see her excited about something academic for the first time in our homeschooling journey
  17. Thank you so much, everyone!!! I'm sorry it took me so long to come back. We're hosting visiting family this week, and it has been a whirlwind of cleaning, prep, and hosting family gatherings. I really appreciate the detailed advice from all of you. I did buy the first module of VideoText just to see how we like it. DD really liked the video samples we watched, and I like what I saw of the method. We'll give it a try, and if we like it and she does well, we'll try the next unit and see what happens. She's not as far along in Dolciani as I thought--maybe 1/3 of the way *sigh*. I do think that part of what's dragging her down is the self-teaching. She really dreads each math lesson, and I think that's a big part of it. She can do the self-teaching if she has to, but I think we'll make better time and she'll be more confident in her abilities if she has someone to teach her the lesson so she can save that mental energy for the actual problems. If the VideoText method doesn't work, I'm going to have to suck it up and start learning each lesson so I can teach it to her myself. After that, maybe Mr. D for Algebra 1 if we can get the timing right--I have heard such rave reviews. I'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it, since we might not be quite ready whenever the next class starts. So if anyone is still reading, let me just make sure I understand. I do agree that I'd like her to take the SAT/ACT in the spring of her junior year if possible. With her anxiety, I'd like her to have a shot at a couple of opportunities to re-take if necessary. So let's say we finish Pre-A in the freshman year time frame, Algebra 1 in sophomore, and then Geometry in junior year. We're looking at her taking her first SAT/ACT without Geometry being finished and with no Algebra 2 under her belt. Is that sufficient for her to get a decent score? I'm happy to shell out for a good prep program--will that be enough to fill in any gaps she may have? That's really one of my primary concerns here. I know she can catch up with college math or even take a class at the CC during the summer if she needs to. I just really want to make sure she has enough math to be solidly SAT-ready when the time comes. Thank you thank you thank you! I'm really feeling so much better about all of this.
  18. Excellent, thanks! And someone on our local FB group clued me in to the fact that a WTMer who happens to be local to me runs science classes and offers dissection, so if necessary and DD really wants to, she can get her hands dirty (ugh!) that way as well. A&P, of course! Wonderful idea! That is a great relief, thank you. I'd like her to still have the experience if we can manage it, but it will be easier to get the smaller dissections accomplished than the larger ones. And it's good to know that even if we can't manage it, we'll still be OK. Her cousin was telling her all about dissecting fetal pigs and whatnot for AP Bio, and I was wondering how on earth I was going to make that happen.
  19. Kiana (or anyone, really), what math would she have finished, ideally, to do well in a standard chem class? Algebra 1? Or all the way through Algebra 2? I can't remember when I took what in my own high school experience. Thank you for the alternate sequence to consider.
  20. The med school focus is a relatively new development, and I was not prepared for high school to go in this direction, so I really haven't done much research. I'm not even sure where to start. We're HSing Bio at home using Miller-Levine and Kolbe's Honors syllabus (still at the beginning for various reasons). I'm comfortable with teaching it, and I'm comfortable with guiding labs etc. BUT...dissections. I'm halfway to vegan right now, personally, and while I know dissections are very important, I simply will not be able to guide DD in them. She has no problem with them though, and is kind of looking forward to them. (She's done a cow eye and a few other small ones, so she knows what to expect to a certain degree.) I'm wondering how important hands-on dissections are for 9th grade bio, especially for a kid looking at a med school-oriented undergrad experience. Are there certain ones we absolutely need to do so that she can be prepared for AP Bio (or more likely DE Bio)? Can we still get by with virtual labs for 9th grade while knowing that she'll be doing hands-on later? And for sequence, my original plan was Bio for 9th, Chem for 10th, a conceptual Physics for 11th, and then something DD wanted for senior year--either a DE or something more interest-led at that point (probably Botany). But now I'm thinking this probably needs to be done differently. Bio for 9th, Chem for 10th, a harder Physics for 11th, then DE Bio for STEM students? Something else? Can we let Physics go in favor of more life-science-oriented courses? Are there standard expectations we should look toward meeting if med school is a consideration? Or am I still just looking at getting a kid into a good college, and THEN she starts worrying about what expectations to meet for med school? Thanks again. I'm flapping in the wind here, and I don't have much time to get all this ready. At least I know what we need to do in the short term!
  21. We have already availed ourselves of that option. She has a September birthday, so I felt OK taking the extra year, but I don't think I could justify taking yet another. Thanks though! We've been fighting this battle for a long time now, and I always knew there was some anxiety, but it didn't really show in any other areas but school until a year or so ago. So I let everything slide, thinking she just needed to mature, and then just thinking we needed to deal with the depression. I'm really starting to think the ADHD was the key to the whole thing though. Many regrets :(
  22. Thank you, this is really helpful because I'm kind of considering it anyway, even knowing it may not save us time. I wasn't quite sure where to go after Dolciani anyway, and while Dolciani has been great, and she's been teaching herself (because wow, did I forget way more than I realized!), I think she'll make way more progress if she has someone teaching her the concept first, even via video. I know I'd have to sit with her and discuss through the videos as well, but I'm OK with that as long as I'm not the primary teacher. I don't think I'm capable of truly teaching from scratch, but I can be the TA!
