  1. Thanks again, all, for the insider tips! We are planning to go mid-June. :D
  2. Thank you, everyone (yes, even you, SPECIAL DARK ;) )! I'm super grateful for the recommendation of the Holiday Inn Express. Dh and I stayed at one in Mystic, CT and it was such a fabulous experience -- my new fave hotel chain! Question for those who've gone to Hershey Park: did you buy your tix through AAA (auto club)? Did you go for 2 days straight? What do you recommend we do first: the park or factory tour? TIA!
  3. I'm looking for recommendations of a US History curriculum that's not literature based and would be good to used for a co-op class. The class is being offered to 9th-10th grades, but it's possible the class may have older students enrolled. Thank you!
  4. I agree! Don't sweat mil's comment. Hey, on the bright side of things -- it's one less mouth to feed. As we say in my house, "Don't want it? Well, that's more for me!" ;)
  5. We're hoping to visit sometime this year and would love suggestions too!!
  6. My dh had similar concerns along the way of our homeschooling journey. I agree with the other posters -- go back to the "gym." :) It'll be worth it to show your hubby that his input matters.
  7. Hi Jean and happy Friday to you too! My standard oatmeal w/raisins and Craisins. I did bake some "fruity-fruity" muffins this morning and 2 of the children ate a few (I don't know what ds14 ate b/c he doesn't care for these muffins). I had one w/coffee as a midmorning snack. Had some leftover Rachael Ray's Goulash over rice pasta "White Knight" Burgers (turkey burgers w/muenster cheese on English muffins) and oven-fries Party planning and shopping for Ds10 (who will officially turn 10yo in early March) After the passing of our gecko lizard we've been happily pet-free for about 2 yrs.
  8. :iagree: Wow! I'm amazed that so many others had "gub'ment" cheese too! And we all lived to tell the story. :tongue_smilie: The story about "this isn't 'governor' cheese at McDonald's was funny!
  9. Thank you! I had oatmeal w/raisins & Craisins Leftover black bean and beef soup We'll be having Rachael Ray's Goulash over rice pasta. We are having school today. I went grocery shopping this morning. Ds10 is trying to decide whether or not we should go to "Bingo for Books" at the library (at this moment he's decided "yes"). I only made one as well - get to bed on-time (no more late-nights). So far, so good...:001_smile:
  10. Another "meanie mom" here. Dh says no FB till 18 yo. I'm more of the mindset of no FB ever! but here's another reason God puts together opposites - to balance one another out. :) I hear this too esp. from ds14 -- so annoying.
  11. :D Kudos to you! You deserve any treat you want for the job you do! I'm just another Starbucks-junkie chiming in here. :o Whew! Yeah, you could've helped me pay off my college loans and still had plenty to spare! LOL! Here's what I do to curtail my "habit" - I only allow myself the "treat" of an "in cafe" coffee once or twice a month at the most (and yes, I regard it as a "reward" for all the HARD work I do as a mom) My Starbucks card is registered for rewards so I get free coffee on my b'day and maybe 1 or 2x more times during the year Replenishing my card with cash or gift card $$ helps me not to spend my own too quickly (and they give me my soy milk free instead of charging extra for it) I bring my empty coffee bags into the cafe for a free coffee (and maybe treat myself to a cake-pop to go with it that day) Hope you'll find the right combination that works for you to help you scale back on your cafe visits. :D
  12. I don't attend a family-intergrated church but we do believe in the practice of having the children in services from age 3 y.o. and up. I liked some of Amanda's suggestions. Keep these in mind for when your little one is a little older. I don't like the idea of snacks and toys, JMO. I did not use these in training our children to be in service. Some of my friends have used toys and/or snacks -- it's a matter of choice here. :) Our training started at home in having family devotions after dinner (and "schooltime" devotions when we started homeschooling). Basically we would teach the children to sit and pay attention to a 5 min. devotional (usually using Bible-based picture books) and gradually increase that time. We also used the Shepherding a Child's Heart model of training/discipline. I know you'd hate to ask him, but if he's willing and if you are both on the same page in terms of child training, you should really take him up on it. The Bible makes it clear that it's primarily the father's job to bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph 6:4). So, your dd is a little young to be trained to sit, IMO. I guess you'll have to make the best of your situation (but please don't go to separate churches).
  13. Ha! Fun thread! Same here! I grew up in the 70s as the 4th out of 5 children to a single parent and here's what my awesome mom was able to provide for us: spam w/tomato paste and onions over white rice (this was my least fave meal) pig's feet hamburger helper ramen noodles "toaster pizza" (Wonderbread, with ketchup and cheese) and on the subject of cheese, I was "privileged" (I am being sarcastic here) to stand on a long line to receive "Government cheese" (that I think Eddie Murphy joked about in one of his early stand up comedy routines) Pop-tarts Cap'n Crunch w/Crunch Berries (had to have those "berries") Frosted Lucky Charms Sugar Smacks (when they were called that - I think they changed the name since then) Oh, and my die-hard fave: Corn Pops Kool-aid, soda, and Sunny Delight were the beverage standards:tongue_smilie:. I didn't start drinking water till I was an adult. We did have a number of "good" foods (not all bad). I also had full breakfasts and lunches when I attended elementary school. It's been fun reminiscing about the "bad" ol' days! :D
  14. :grouphug:@Natnclay You *had* your mom's support up until this convo so you expected she'd continue in her support -- maybe she's of the mindset that homeschooling is "okay" for the elementary yrs, but not for the high school years? This has been the mindset of some of our family members. Now that oldest ds is doing high school at home, their fears of him "growing five heads and turning into an extraterrestrial creature" have been unfounded. (((snicker))) He's so totally *normal* that it boggles their minds -- and I've had the last laugh. So, yeah, just "shelve" the high school at home convo till you get to that bridge. Continue to love Mom and give her your understanding and patient ear. She's not involved everyday in the wonderful things that are happening in your home school so of course she really doesn't know. HTH!:)
  15. If you have that amount of money then I say "go for it." ;)
  16. Couldn't help noticing you've got a birthday coming soon!

  17. How about Our Daily Bread http://www.odb.org. My dd likes the booklets (which can be ordered from the site) and will have personal devotions as soon as she wakes up using them. I like reading the online version and it even comes with audio and links to Biblegateway.com to read the corresponding verse(s) for the devotion of the day. I esp. appreciate the applications (at times they can be very encouraging and/or convicting) and although the devotionals are short, they sure are better than nothing. ;)
  18. Eeee-gats! I hope this doesn't catch on. I think it's ridiculous that you are being "charged" to attend a kid's party.
