  1. I didn't do a product comparison before getting this. We were using Spelling Workout as well and I needed something my ds could do independently. I've been very pleased with Apples... as it has been a good review of spelling rules, gives ample practice, and is done completely independently. Some of the review is overkill for my ds, so we just skip pages in the lesson he's mastered.
  2. :D Been using Shiller Math for a couple of years now. Currently dd7 just started Kit 2, ds5 is in book3 of Kit 1. I heartily agree with the other posters comments on the program. It's totally different from what most folks are accustomed to when it comes to Math. No program is *perfect* so we do supplement with workbooks. Probably the best thing I like about Shiller is that you can do as much or as little as your child wants to do. Sometimes we just play with the sponge ball and practice skip counting as we roll it to each other (who said Shiller didn't have any games?;)) Hee, hee! If you're interested, I gave a detailed review of Kit 1 and my first impressions of Kit 2 on my blog. Best Wishes!
  3. :D That's terrific! Your kids must be so excited.
  4. ...for as long as we've been homeschooling (since 2001). I tried combining youngest two using Shiller Math, but they soon split off as their individual strengths and weakness required individual instruction. I've always done Science as a family, but we've used different companies for that (Abeka, Apologia, Dinah Zike, God's Design for the Human Body and another one that slips my mind at the moment).
  5. Do you think you might like "textbook" curricula or something more hands-on? Does your child know how to read or will you be working on that in the coming year? What core subjects are you interested in your child studying? I'm teaching 3dc and have had different experiences in the 1st gr with them all (and had to use different things) so I just want to know how to gear my response to be most helpful to you.
  6. If it were me, I would just skip it:). If you feel your child must do it, then make it a mother-child project and do it together giving lots of help and encouragement. I have come across work that was too difficult for my child to do at the time even though it supposedly was for their grade level. So far, nothing lost for bypassing work beyond their ability. HTH!
  7. Although I don't *love* Latin Primer, it's gotten the job done for the last 2 years. Ds gr5 is now doing Latin Primer II. I thought part 1 moved at a slow enough pace for my then 3rd grader and we've taken our time going through the word lists and lessons at our own pace. I didn't study Latin myself, but I have studied Spanish in HS and college so that helps. The Super Pack as offered by Logos School (http://www.logosschool.com) includes the DVD of the teacher doing the chants with her class and introducing the lessons (ie. workbook activities), teacher's guide and worksheet booklet (I forgot what special name they call it), student wkbk and audio CD. It also comes with flashcards which I found to be too big and was happy to make my own out of halved index cards and place on a ring. This has enabled us both to learn the language. I'm sorry I don't have anything else to compare it to. I have posted about Latin curricula, visited Paula's archives, etc., but for now I'm content to stay put. Probably LP biggest "con" is that it's geared for classroom use so I had to think of ways to do the games (for example) for just one child.
  8. I don't think you need to change your spelling curriculum unless you or your child are unhappy with it. Hope it continues to work well for you!
  9. Hi, My teacher's notebook includes a weekly schedule for my 3 dc (gr. 1, 2 & 5), a section for each of their "independent education plans" (a list what curriculum I bought for them, when I plan to use it and which days of the week I plan to use it on -- has cured the "what did I buy this for?" syndrome:D. Also, in each of their sections I include our first day and last day of school surveys (homemade) which they fill out and includes some of their favorite things and goals for the school year. We add a photo at the bottom. It's fun for all of us to see how much they've changed (in height, in appearance, and in faves). I might save a picture or note that they have given to me saying how much they like homeschool or how much they love me (little encouragements go a long way on discouraging days). I have a reference section for me, and that's a hodge-podge of different things, from inspirational emails, scripture verses, my amblesideonline.com listing of composers and artists to study, to contact info, etc. Last section is for testing since I'm registered as a test administrator with Bob Jones Testing. My pencil case has binder holes so that goes in the front and has a highlighter, pens, pencils (for doing my schedule), correction fluid, stickers (for encouragements), and paper reinforcers (for those torn pages in each of our notebooks). Front pocket holds our attendance sheet so I can mark down our school days (I always kept count even before moving to a state that requires it). The nice thing is that I believe there's no wrong way to make one. I encourage you to make it fit your personality and be a reference point for you.
  10. I'm not a "regular" in the sense that I don't pop in everyday  but I can't pass up an introduction. My children are ages 5 to 10 (just 3 kiddos) and they've always been homeschooled. Hope it's going well for you and hope you'll get lots of ideas and "chat" time on the boards.
  11. Oldest dc has been using Latin Primer for a couple of yrs now. I think this one is listed in Paula's Archives, but I'm not sure. Hope to use Latin Primer 1 w/ younger dc starting Sept '08.
  12. Hi, I love polls! For my "other" I'm using ACE's English and Imitation in Writing - Greek Heroes w/ds gr5. My younger 2 dc (grs 1st and 2nd) are using Saxon Phonics level 2 which includes punctuation and spelling.
